Georgia Southern tied
for 11th at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Ben Stone and Kramer Hickok each carded a 4-under-par 68, and Texas finished
the day with an 8-under 280 to lead the 34th Annual Schenkel Invitational after
first-round action Friday at Forest Heights Country Club.
Stone was bogey free and posted four birdies, while Hickok
collected six birdies and two bogeys. Both Longhorns are tied for second behind
Alabama's Justin Thomas, who carded a 5-under 67 and birdied his final hole to
take sole possession of the lead.
UCF's Jose Joia played his last nine at 4-under to tie for
second with a 68, and Vanderbilt's Charlie Ewing birdied two of his last three
holes to join the foursome in second place.
Texas has a two-stroke lead over defending Schenkel champion
Alabama (-6), and Florida (-3) is in third. UCF (+3) is fourth, followed by UAB
(+4) and Vanderbilt (+4) in the top five.
Georgia Southern is tied for 11th (+9) with College of
Charleston and Notre Dame, a stroke behind North Texas (+8) and Maryland (+8).
Scott Wolfes led the Eagles with a 2-under 70 after
pocketing birdies on his last three holes and is tied for sixth.
Charlie Martin shot a 74, and Blake Olson carded a 76. Will
Evans finished with a 77, and Hayden Anderson carded a 79.
Matt Mierzejewski, who played as an individual, finished
with an even-par 72 and is tied for 17th. The sophomore started on hole 10 and
was 5-under through his first 10 holes and alone atop the leaderboard at one
point during the day.
Caleb Morris, who is also playing as an individual, is tied
for 21st after carding a 73. Christian Humber finished with an 81.
Action continues Saturday with tee times starting at 9 a.m.
College of Charleston
tied for 11th at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Led by junior Alex Ellis, who shot a 2-under par round of 70, the College of
Charleston men’s golf team is tied for 11th place after the opening round of
the Schenkel Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern at the Forest Heights
Country Club.
The Cougars combined to shoot a team score of 297 (+9) and
are in a three-way tie for 11th with Georgia Southern and Notre Dame. Defending
national champion Texas leads the tournament after an opening 280 (-8).
After a 1-over par start on his first nine holes, Ellis made
four birdies on his second nine holes and is currently tied for sixth place on
the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Zach Munroe also rebounded from a rough start as
he bogeyed his first three holes of the round and ended up with four birdies
and a 2-over 74.
Senior John Duke Hudson carded a 4-over 76 and Neil Gowan
rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with a 5-over 77. Freshman Josh
Lorenzetti shot a 6-over 78.
The Cougars will tee off for round two at 9:45 a.m. Saturday
and will be paired with Georgia Southern and Maryland.
