UNCG moves up to third at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team posted the fourth-lowest team score of the day in a difficult round Monday on the second day of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Spartans posted a 311 on the day two to move up into a tie for third place overall with Ball State at 603 (292-311), playing one of the most challenging courses in the country, Pinehurst No. 2.

The famed Pinehurst No. 2 course has hosted major championships and will be the home of the 2014 U.S. Open Championship and the 2014 Women’s U.S. Open Championship. The Spartans’ 311 is the fourth-lowest score of the afternoon on the 7,400-yard course that played at a par 70. The 311 score was just three shots off the lowest pace for the day, trailing VCU, which tallied a 308.

UNCG enters the final round of play Tuesday just four shots off the overall lead, trailing Old Dominion and VCU, while sitting in a tie with Ball State. The final round of the tournament will switch back to the Pinehurst No. 6 course, which the teams played in round one Sunday when UNCG notched a season-low 292.

Freshman Taylor Coalson maintained his second-place standing in the individual rankings after posting a 6-over par 76, which was the third-lowest round of the day on the difficult course. Coalson boasts a 4-over par 145 and trails Ball State’s Tyler Merkel by two shots with 18 holes to play. Merkel recorded the top score of the afternoon with a 3-over par 73 to move up three spots from fourth overall.

Sophomore Roy Dixon improved his standing 12 spots, moving into a tie for seventh overall as he also tallied a 6-over par 76, the third-lowest round of the day. Dixon posted three birdies on the afternoon while also notching three bogeys and a double-bogey on hole No. 18.

Sophomore Alex Ehlert sits in a tie for 18th overall after carding an 8-over par 78 on day two. Ehlert has a 152 overall through 36 holes, as he tallied two birdies on the first nine holes.

Seniors Robert Hoadley and Matt Younts rounded out the Spartans in the lineup as they are tied for 46th overall with scores of 158.

Freshman Wilson Brown owns a 169 (77-92) to sit in a tie for 50th place while classmate Luke Haithcock has a 158 (77-81) as individuals.

 

Appalachian State fifth at Bash at the Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Appalachian State recorded two scores under par on Monday but remained in fifth place heading into the final round of the Bash at the Beach at The Surf Golf and Beach Club on Tuesday.

Junior Casey Komline paced the Mountaineers, scoring a 2-under 70, a four-shot improvement from his opening-round score, moving him from 26th to 17th. Also in 17th, senior Josh Nichols carded a 71 (-1) for the second-best Appalachian State score on the afternoon.

Appalachian State's top scorer for the tournament is graduate student Daniel Walsh, who turned in a 72 (E) for a two-day total of 142 (-2). Walsh is currently tied for 11th and is seven shots behind leader Callum Tarren of first-place Radford. The Highlanders fired a 274 (-14) as they lead second-place Jacksonville by 10 strokes.

Rounding out the Mountaineer scoring, senior Jay Brown tallied a 77 (+5) and classmate Drew Harris carded an 85 (+13).

In the team standings, Appalachian is fifth after recording a 290, four strokes lower than the opening-round 294.

Sophomore Eric Eberspeaker continues to lead the individuals of the tournament, finishing the second round with a 71 (-1) after firing a career-best 69 (-3) to open the tournament.

Also playing as an individual, freshman Caleb Keck improved by a stroke with a 74 (+2). Keck is currently tied for 35th for the tournament.

The final round will begin on Tuesday at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.

 

Chattanooga in seventh at Auburn Tiger Shootout

OPELIKA, Ala. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is seventh after 18 holes at the Tiger Invitational on the Grand National Golf Club Lake Course. UTC shot 10-over par 298 and is two shots behind Memphis in sixth.

Junior Chris Robb led the Mocs at level-par 72 for the soggy round. He balanced four birdies and four bogeys with 10 pars on his card. He is tied for sixth, three strokes behind South Alabama’s Michael Garretson, who leads at minus-3, 69.

Fellow junior Benni Weilguni came up big for his squad after a slow start. He was plus-3, opening bogey, double-bogey on his first two holes. He was 4-over through 15 before an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole and birdie on the fifth got him back to a 1-over 73 finish. He is tied for 13th.

Junior Davis Bunn and senior Steven Fox rounded out the counting scores. Bunn shot 76 (+4), while Fox checked in at plus-5, 77. Sophomore Liam Johnston had the drop score with an 80.

East Carolina ended the weather-shortened day in front at 290 (+2). It has a two-shot lead over Mississippi State (292) in second and a three-stroke cushion on No. 24 Wake Forest and Kennesaw State at 293.

Due to weather delays, Monday’s scheduled 36-hole day became 18. That means a shotgun start Tuesday as the field plays its final 36. It starts at 8 a.m., Central time, for the Mocs paired with North Carolina and host Auburn beginning on eight through 10.

 

Elon ninth at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – With two rounds of play in the books following the first day of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, Elon's Stuart Kaufman finds himself in a tie for seventh individually, while the Phoenix is tied for ninth as a team with one round to play.

Elon posted a 591 (295-296) over its two rounds on Monday to tie Penn for ninth.

South Carolina, ranked 36th nationally, leads the 18-team field with a mark of 570 (287-283) and leads No. 65 NC State by one stroke.  In a tie for third with a 574 are No. 59 Augusta State and No. 58 Virginia, while 23rd-ranked Clemson and No. 28 Liberty share fifth with a tally of 577.

Other top-100 teams in the field include No. 87 Georgia State (eighth, 584) and No. 100 Maryland (T14th, 599).

Kaufman (69-72) is one of three players who posted a 1-over 141 over their first 36 holes of the tournament.  He had one eagle over his two rounds.

Trailing Kaufman by six strokes is John Somers.  Somers posted rounds of 75 and 72 on his way to a 147.  He had one eagle and led the field on the par-5 holes, shooting 5-under on the par-5s.

In a tie for 49th in the 90-player field is Jack Adkins.  Adkins posted a two-round score of 150 (73-77) on Monday.  He is followed by Will DiIanni and Jeff Krieger.  DiIanni will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 76th with a mark of 156 (81-75), while Kreiger shot a 160 (78-82) to tie for 85th.

Leading the individual field is Virginia's Mac McLaughlin.  McLaughlin carded a 135 (71-64) during his two rounds.

 

Furman tied for 12th at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – The Furman men’s golf team posted a first-round 295 and second-round 299 to hold a share of 12th place after 36 holes in the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club on Monday.

Freshman Preston Cole (+9), senior Matt Brown (+9) and freshman Wehman Hopke (+9) are all tied for a share of 43rd place at 9-over par through two rounds.  Cole, a Riverside High School product, fired a first-round 71 before shooting 78 in the afternoon.  Brown followed a 4-over 74 in the morning round with a 75 in the afternoon, while Hopke recovered from a 9-over first round to shoot 70 in round two.

Final-round action at the Palmetto Golf Club is set for Tuesday morning.

 

Western Carolina tied for 12th at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – Paced by sophomore J.T. Poston in a tie for 17th overall, the Western Carolina men’s golf team is tied for 12th in the standings after 36 holes at the 16th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.

The Catamounts posted rounds of 296 and 298 in the first two rounds on Monday.

Poston carded rounds of 2-over par 72 and 3-over 73 on Monday to stand tied with seven others for 17th in the individual standings. The Hickory, N.C., native was tied for 23rd with senior teammate Steven Smith after the opening-round 72, advancing six positions in the second round.

Smith shot 6-over 76 on the second 18 holes Monday to slip into a tie for 38th entering Tuesday’s final round. Freshman Tyler Lail is just a stroke behind Smith after rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149, tied for 43rd through 36 holes.

Rounding out WCU’s scorers through two rounds are senior Kyle Wilson in a tie for 60th (78-74=152) and Matthew Turner tied for 89th (80-83=163).

The final round of the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will commence at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
