Appalachian State fifth
at Bash at the Beach
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Graduate student Daniel Walsh was one stroke away from tying his season-low of
69 as he led Appalachian State with an opening-round 70 Sunday. With Walsh's
70, the Mountaineers are in fifth after the first of three rounds at the Bash
at the Beach, held at The Surf Golf and Beach Club.
The 1-under 70 tied Walsh for eighth place, while the Mountaineers
totaled a 294 (+6) and are 13 shots behind tournament leader Radford.
Following Walsh was senior Josh Nichols, who is tied for
20th with a 73 (+1) and junior Casey Komline, who carded a 74 (+2) and is tied
for 26th. Rounding out the Appalachian State scoring was senior Drew Harris
with a 77 (+5) and senior Jay Brown with an 84 (+12).
Individually, sophomore Eric Eberspeaker fired a 3-under 69,
tying him for fifth place overall. Eberspeaker leads all individual players and
the 69 is his lowest score of his two-year career at Appalachian State.
Freshman Caleb Keck also played as an individual and posted a 75 (+3).
High Point's McKay Tye posted the lowest score of the
afternoon, pacing the field with a 7-under 65 as the Panthers sit in fourth
place, seven shots behind the tournament-leading Highlanders.
Appalachian State returns to The Surf Golf and Beach Club on
Monday with Brown teeing off first for the Mountaineers at 9:10 a.m.
UNCG fifth at
Pinehurst Intercollegiate
PINEHURST, N.C. –
The UNCG men's golf freshman Taylor Coalson sits alone in second place after
day one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday, helping the Spartans sit in
fifth place overall in the team standings after 18 holes of play on Pinehurst’s
No. 6 course at the Pinehurst Resort.
Round two will be played Monday on the famed No. 2 course with
tee times between 8:54-9:30 a.m.
Coalson fired a 2-under par 69 to sit just one shot out of
the lead held by Nathan Kerns of Marshall at 3-under par 68. Coalson posted
five birdies on the day, including four on the back nine, to overcome a bogey
and a double-bogey. His play helped the Spartans post a 9-over par 293, placing
fifth overall, seven shots off the lead held by Old Dominion (286). The 293
team score is the lowest of the year for UNCG, one shot better than a 294 it
shot in the second round of the VCU Shootout (Sept. 24).
Sophomore Roy Dixon is tied for 19th overall after carding a
2-over par 73 with three birdies on the front nine. Classmate Alex Ehlert is
just one shot back in a tie for 28th overall with a 3-over par 74. He started
the day with two birdies in the first nine holes but dropped five strokes from
holes No. 10-13 before finishing with five straight pars.
Seniors Robert Hoadley and Matt Younts rounded out the
Spartans in the lineup with scores of 5-over par 76 and 6-over par 77,
respectively.
Playing as individuals, freshman Wilson Brown posted a
5-over par 76 to sit in a tie for 50th place while classmate Luke Haithcock carded
a 6-over par 77.
