Final round of John Hayt Collegiate Invitational canceled, Furman 15th

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Heavy rains in the Jacksonville, Fla., area washed out the final round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club on Tuesday morning as the Furman men’s golf team was forced to settle for a 15^th-place finish in the 36-hole event.

Senior Matt Brown (+4) was the Paladins’ top finisher, claiming a share of 31st place, while fellow senior Anthony Aloi (+5) tied for 39th.  Freshman Preston Cole, playing as an individual, posted back-to-back rounds of 75 to take a share of 43rd place.

The University of North Florida (-17) captured a 12-stroke victory over second-place Duke (-5) with UCF (+9) finishing in third place.  The 15-team John Hayt Collegiate Invitational field featured 10 of the top 50 teams in the country.

UNF’s Kevin Phelan (-13) cruised to Individual medalist honors, shooting rounds of 64 and 67 in the rain-shortened event.

Furman returns to action March 4-5, at the Samford Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.

 

UNCG finish 12^th at Snowman Getaway

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The UNCG men's golf team concluded play in the Snowman Getaway on Tuesday, playing the final 18 holes at the Palm Valley Golf Club hosted by Washington State. The Spartans finished the 54-hole event in a tie for 12th place with a score of 904 (304-298-302), while Missouri took home the top event with a score of 853 (280-285-288).

Senior Robert Hoadley led the Spartans in the lineup, finishing tied for 39th with a three-round score of 7-over par 222 (77-70-75). Freshman Taylor Coalson finished in a tie for 35th place as an individual with a 6-over par 221 (76-73-72).

Sophomore Roy Dixon was consistent all week, posting a 9-over par 225 as he shot a 75 in each round on the par-72 course. Classmate Alex Ehlert carded an 11-over par 227 (73-78-76), finishing 61st.

Freshman Luke Haithcock posted a 230 score (79-75-76) while senior Matt Younts carded a 236 (79-78-79).

The Spartans return to action March 10-12 as they return to North Carolina to play in the prestigious Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

 

Appalachian State competes at Irish Creek Intercollegiate

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Four members of the Appalachian State University men's golf team competed in the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Monday, before Tuesday's final round was canceled due to the heavy rain in the Kannapolis area. Freshman Caleb Keck led the Mountaineers, tying for 19th in the 89-player field with a 76 (+5).

Following Keck with matching 79s (+8) were senior Nick Buckwell and sophomore Eric Eberspeaker, as they tied for 44th place. Rounding out the Appalachian State scoring was sophomore Andrew Furr with an 80 (+9) and a 53^rd-place finish.

The Mountaineers enter their first team tournament on Sunday, March 10, as they host the Bash at the Beach at The Surf Golf and Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The three-day tournament saw 15 teams in the field last season, as Appalachian claimed an 11^th-place finish.
