Furman in 15th
at John Hayt Collegiate
PONTE VEDRA BEACH,
Fla. – Freshman Preston Cole carded a second-round 75 to pace the Furman
men’s golf team on Monday in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the
par-72, 6,988-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Playing as an individual, Cole birdied two of his first five
holes to shoot a 3-over-par 75 and maintain a share of 43rd place through 36
holes. The Riverside High School product and Greer, S.C., native shot a 37 on
the back nine before posting a 38 on the front nine in second-round play after
carding an identical 3-over 75 on Sunday.
Seniors Matt Brown (+4) and Anthony Aloi (+5) each carded a
4-over 76 on Monday to lead the Paladins to a 24-over 312 in second-round play
as Furman (+37) slipped to 15th place entering the final 18 holes.
The University of North Florida (-17) strengthened its hold
on the tournament lead with a 5-under 283 to move 12 strokes ahead of
second-place Duke (-5) and hold a 26-stroke advantage on third-place UCF (+9).
UNF’s Kevin Phelan followed his tournament-record 64 on
Sunday with a 5-under 67 on Monday morning to hold a four-stroke lead over
teammate and second-place Sean Dale.
Final-round action is slated for 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The
15-team John Hayt Collegiate Invitational field includes 10 of the top 50 teams
in the nation entering the spring season.
UNCG 12th
at Snowman Getaway
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The
UNCG men’s golf team finished day one of Washington State’s Snowman Getaway on
Monday, playing 36 holes at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Spartans placed 12th
after the first two rounds with a score of 602 (604-298), while Missouri leads
the event with a score of 565 (280-285).
Senior Robert Hoadley led the Spartans with a 36-hole score
of 3-over par 147. Hoadley opened the day shooting a 5-over par 77 before
rebounding with a second-round score of 2-under par 70 as he posted five
birdies in the second round.
Sophomore Roy Dixon sits in a tie for 51st after posting
back-to-back rounds of 75 for a 6-over par 150. Classmate Alex Ehlert is tied
for 53rd with a two-round score of 151 as he opened the day with a first-round
score of 73 before closing the afternoon with a 78.
Freshman Luke Haithcock and senior Matt Younts rounded out
the Spartans’ five-man lineup as they posted scores of 154 (79-75) and 157
(79-78), respectively.
Freshman Taylor Coalson sits in a tie for 45th with a score
of 149 as an individual after carding scores of 76 and 73.
The Spartans will conclude the 54-hole event Tuesday with the third round
starting at 7 a.m. (PT) with a shotgun start.
