Chattanooga finishes
in fifth-place tie at Bayou City Collegiate
HUMBLE, Texas – The
Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team shot 295 (+7) in Sunday’s final round to move
up to a tie for fifth finish at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship. The
event was played on Redstone Golf Club’s Tournament Course, which is the site
of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open.
Senior Steven Fox led the Mocs, tying for 18th at 1-over par
217. He shot consistent rounds of 72, 73 and 72 for his total. Junior Davis
Bunn was just as solid, tying for 22nd a stroke back at 218 (+2). He carded
scores of 73, 72 and 73.
Liam Johnston was one more shot behind Fox, tying for 25th
at 219 (+3). After opening the tourney shooting 69 and 71, Johnston struggled
with a 7-over par 79 Sunday. He recorded the final round drop score for the
team.
Chris Robb tied Fox for the team lead Sunday with a 72, as
well. He tied for 46th at 223. Benni Weilguni rounded out the team scoring with
a 78 Sunday for a three-day total of 234.
No. 3 Texas ran away with the title, shooting 22-under 842.
The Longhorns won by 21 over co-host Houston at 863, while South Carolina took
third at plus-7 (871). UT’s Brandon Stone shot 67 (-5) Sunday to win medalist
honors at 207 (-9), three strokes clear of teammate and runner-up Julio Vegas
at 210 (-6).
The Mocs are off until March 11-12, when the squad tees it
up at the Auburn Tiger Shootout.
Furman in 13th
at John Hayt Collegiate
PONTE VEDRA BEACH,
Fla. – Senior Matt Brown notched an even-par 72 to pace the Furman’s men’s
golf team in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on
Sunday at the par-72, 6,988-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Brown (E) posted a pair of birdies over his final nine holes
to earn a share of 25th place after one round.
Senior Anthony Aloi (+1) birdied four holes during opening round play but
settled for a share of 33rd place after suffering double-bogeys on two of his
final three holes on Sunday.
The University of North Florida grabbed the first-round lead
with a tournament-record tying 12-under 276, as the Ospreys lead second-place
Duke by six strokes and third-place UCF by 10 strokes through 18 holes. Furman is tied with Mercer for 13th place at
13-over 301. The 14-team tournament
field includes 10 of the top 50 teams in the nation entering the spring season.
UNF’s Kevin Phelan set a tournament record with an 8-under
64 to take the individual lead.
Second-round action is set for Monday at 8 a.m. with the
final round slated to begin on Tuesday morning.
