Georgia Southern wins Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Georgia Southern golf team rallied from a three-stroke deficit and posted a 293 in the third round to win the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the Eagles' third tournament victory of the 2012-13 campaign and the first time Georgia Southern has won three tournaments in a season since 2008-09.

The Eagles entered the day with four holes remaining from Monday’s second round, which was suspended due to darkness after the tournament got off to a late start because of frost. The team finished the second round with a 290, putting the Eagles in second place, three strokes back of Richmond and setting the stage for the third-round comeback.

Georgia Southern finished the tournament with a team score of 879 (+15), eight strokes ahead of second-place Francis Marion (+23), which hosted the tournament. Richmond and South Florida (+24) tied for third.

Scott Wolfes finished the second round with a 71 and fired a 70 in the third round to tie for second with a 2-under-par 214, two shots back of Trey Valentine of South Forida. It marked the fourth tournament this season in which the sophomore has placed first or second.

Hayden Anderson shot a 72 in round two and a 73 for the final 18 to take fifth with an even-par 216. The junior now has three top-10 finishes and four top-20 outings this season.

Charlie Martin finished his second round with a 71 and posted a 75 in the third round to tie for 11th, his fourth top-15 finish. Blake Olson finished the tournament strong, posting a 76 in the second round and a 75 in the final round. Will Evans carded a 158 in the final two rounds.

The tournament field contained four other Southern Conference teams in Davidson (6th, +35), Elon (T13, +61), Samford (5th, +33) and Western Carolina (T13, +61). Western Carolina's J.T. Poston tied Wolfes for second in the individual standings.

The Eagles will take a week off before competing at the Samford Intercollegiate on March 4-5.

 

Samford finishes fifth at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Samford University men’s golf team opened its 2013 spring season in impressive fashion Tuesday as the Bulldogs placed fifth out of 18 teams at the eighth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament.

The exclusive season-opening tournament was held at the pristine Wexford Plantation Golf Course, which underwent extensive renovations in 2011 (overseen by the Arnold Palmer Design Company), measures 6,828 yards and is a par-72 layout.

Along with Samford, this year's nationally competitive field included host school Francis Marion, Campbell, Connecticut, Davidson, Dayton, DePaul, Elon, Georgia Southern, Ohio, Presbyterian College, Radford, Richmond, USC Aiken, USF, Western Carolina, William & Mary and defending team champion Georgia State.

The Bulldogs entered the final day of competition as the eighth-place team in the tournament but posted final rounds of 296 and 300 to vault into the fifth-place position Tuesday. Samford finished the three-round, two-day event with a total team score of 897 (301-296-300).

Additionally, the Bulldogs only finished 10 strokes behind second-place performer Francis Marion.

Samford’s Casey O’Toole and Bill Nabors turned in the team’s best performances of the week at the 2013 Wexford Intercollegiate. O’Toole fired a 6-over-par 222 (73-77-72) and saved his best round for Tuesday as he closed out the 54-hole event with an even-par 72.

Nabors posted a brilliant 1-under-par 71 in the second round of play and finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 222 (75-71-76). O’Toole and Nabors concluded the three-round competition tied for 14th place out of 90 golfers.

Drew Aimone finished just one stroke behind his teammates at 223 (75-76-72) and earned a tie for 20th place in the individual standings. Samford’s Zac Hughes and Mac Hennessey rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs at 231 (78-73-80) and 238 (81-76-81), respectively.

The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action March 4-5 as the Bulldogs host the 2013 Samford Invitational which will be held at the Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.

 

Davidson finishes sixth at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Davidson men’s golf team opened its spring campaign with a solid sixth-place finish out of 18 teams at the Wexford Plantation Collegiate hosted by Francis Marion.

Despite light rain on Tuesday, the 18-team field was able to complete Monday’s delayed second round – five holes for each squad – and then the final 18 holes.

The annual event was played on the 6,828-yard, par 72 Wexford Plantation layout designed by Arnold Palmer.

As a team, the Wildcats finished the two-day tournament with a 54-hole total of 899 (299-294-306), which was just two strokes behind Samford.

Highlighted by a second-round 70, Sam Echikson (75-70-77=222) paced Davidson on the individual leaderboard, coming home tied for 14th.

The Wildcats’ overnight leader John Skeadas (73-76-74=223) finished a stroke back of Echikson in a tie for 20th, while Richard Fountain (75-72-77=224) used an even-par 72 in round two to place just outside the top 25.

Also competing for Davidson was David Sargent (T-41st) and Ralph Blasey (T-68th), who recorded final totals of 231 and 238, respectively.

The Wildcats, who recorded their fifth top-10 finish in as many outings this year, will enjoy a two-week break before hosting the Davidson College Invitational at River Run Country Club on March 4-5.

 

Elon finishes 13th at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Despite a light rain that fell for much of Tuesday, the 18 teams competing in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate were able to play the final five holes of round two and play a complete third round to complete the tournament. In its first tournament of the spring, Elon posted a three-round score of 925 (309-309-307) to tie for 13th.

Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold was Stuart Kaufman.  Kaufman rallied from a first-round 81 to place 30th among the 90 individuals in the field with a final mark of 225 (81-71-73).  His 12 birdies over his three rounds were tied for the third-most in the tournament.

Kaufman was followed by Jack Adkins, who tied for 35th with a score of 229 (72-76-81).  Adkins notched 34 pars over his 54 holes of play in the event.

Placing in a tie for 57th was Dylan Morgan, who shot a 236 (82-74-80).  He was followed by John Somers, who tied for 83rd with a 244 (77-88-79), and Troy Beaver, who placed in a tie for 86th with a mark of 250 (79-96-75).

Individual medalist honors went to South Florida's Trey Valentine, who carded a 212 (69-73-70).

Georgia Southern, ranked 51st in the GolfWeek rankings, took home the team title with a three-round score of 879 (296-290-293).

Elon's 925 placed the Phoenix in a tie with fellow Southern Conference member Western Carolina (313-299-313).

The Phoenix will next compete at the Davidson College Invitational in Davidson, N.C., on March 4-5.

 

Western Carolina finishes tied for 13th at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Entering the final round atop the individual leader board, Western Carolina sophomore J.T. Poston came home tied for the runner-up spot, two strokes in arrears of the tournament individual medalist at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course. WCU advanced three positions in the final standings to stand tied with Elon in 13th place with a three-round score of 925.

Despite light rain on Tuesday, the 18-team field was able to complete Monday’s suspended second round – five holes for each squad – and then the final 18 holes.

Poston backed up his opening round 2-under par 70 with a 1-under 71 as teams completed the final five holes of the second round on Tuesday morning before playing the final 18. The Hickory, N.C., held a one-stroke lead over eventual champion Trey Valentine, 141-to-142, after 36 holes. Poston shot 1-over par 73 over the final round, finishing tied with GSU’s Scott Wolfes at 214.

Poston finished tied for second with 13 birdies while also ranking tied for fifth at 4-under on the par-5 holes. He matched his career-best finish from the fall season, tallying his second runner-up finish.

Following Poston, senior Steven Smith finished in a two-way tie for 33rd at 228. The Kirknewton, Scotland, native sandwiched rounds of 78 around an even-par 72 in round two. Redshirt senior Kyle Wilson finished tied for 77th overall with a three-round score of 242 (88-78-76), while Jack Walsh slipped into a tie for 80th overall at 243 (79-78-86). Rounding out WCU’s side was freshman Tyler Lail (90th, 86-81-91=258).

Western Carolina returns to action in early March, traveling to the Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala., for the Samford Intercollegiate. The Catamounts finished fifth at the tournament a season ago.
