Chattanooga finishes 10th at Brickyard Collegiate
MACON, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team shot its best round of the season to close out the Brickyard Collegiate. Sunday’s 3-under par 287 gave it a 10th-place finish and a 54-hole total of 881.
Liam Johnston, a junior from Dumfries, Scotland, ended up tied for sixth, shooting 6-under for the weekend. He tallied rounds of 70, 71 and 69 for a career-best finish and total (210).
Johntson’s minus-3 wasn’t the only under-par round on the Mocs’ ledger. Freshmen Wes Gosselin and Ewan Scott shot 69 and 70, respectively, while senior Chris Robb turned in a level-par 72. Stuart Thomas shot 74, while Davis Bunn had the drop score with a 77.
Scott tied for 28th. His 2-over par 218 is his best result of 2013-14.
Gosselin turned in a perfect card. He posted three birdies and 15 pars for a bogey-free 69. His 222 (+6) is also a season best.
Host Mercer claimed an impressive win, shooting 837 (-27). The Bears won by two over Georgia Tech (839). Virginia Tech (849) and Georgia (853) finished third and fourth. Three individuals – Emmanual Kountakis (Mercer), Seth Reeves (Ga. Tech) and Hans Reimers (Mercer) shared medalist honors at 9-under par (207).
Chattanooga returns to Georgia in just over a week for the AutoTrader.com Collegiate. This year’s event is Oct. 14-15 at Berkeley Hills Country Club outside Atlanta.
Furman finishes 11th at Brickyard Collegiate
MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Preston Cole (+6) fired an even 72 Sunday to lead Furman (+27) to an 11th-place finish at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club. Cole, who registered five birdies on the day, finished in a tie for 43rd place.
Host Mercer (-27) held on for a two-stroke win over Georgia Tech (-25), while Virginia Tech (-15), Georgia (-11), and South Florida (-4) rounded out the top five. Georgia Tech’s Seth Reeves (-9) tied with Mercer’s Hans Reimers (-9) and Emmanuel Kountakis (-9) for individual medalist honors.
Sophomore Wehman Hopke (+3) carded a final-round 79 to tie for 32rd overall, pacing the Paladins on the leaderboard, while freshman Bryce Howell (+9) birdied No. 11 for a 73 in Sunday’s round to finish in a tie for 55th place.
Junior Michael Borton (+11) birdied 2 and 18 for a final-round 73, tying for 64th, and sophomore Preston Heyward (+19) tied for 77th after recording a 78 on Sunday, with three birdies on the front nine. Redshirt freshman Rob Knight, playing as an individual, fired a 71 in the tournament’s second round after birdieing four of his first five holes on the day.
Furman return to the course Oct. 11-12, when the Paladins compete at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn.
