Chattanooga 10th at Brickyard Collegiate
MACON, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team moved past Furman into 10th place with 18 holes to play at the Brickyard Collegiate on Saturday. UTC shot 294, its second-best round of 2013-14.
Stuart Thomas led the Mocs with a 2-under-par 70. He opened with an 81 and has a total of 151 through 36 holes.
Ewan Scott leads Chattanooga at 148 with rounds of 73 and 75. He is two clear of Chris Robb and Davis Bunn at 150. Thomas is at 151, followed by Wes Gosselin with a 153.
Liam Johnston fired his second straight under-par round with a 71 (-1) Saturday. He is tied for 11th at 3-under 141 playing as an individual.
Host Mercer is the leader at 20-under-par 556 after a 16-under performance Saturday, shooting 272. It holds a one-stroke advantage over first-round leader Georgia Tech at 557. Virginia Tech is nine out at 11-under 565.
The Yellow Jackets’ Ollie Schniederjans is the individual leader at minus-8 (136). Mercer’s Emmanuel Kountakis and Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent are one stroke off the pace at 7-under (137).
The Mocs start their final round Sunday at 8:50 a.m. on the 10th tee. Gosselin leads off followed by Thomas (9:00), Robb (9:10), Bunn (9:20) and Scott (9:30). Johnston is in the final group off of 10 at 10 a.m.
Furman 11th at Brickyard Collegiate
MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Wehman Hopke (-4) carded a second-round even 72 Saturday to continue to lead Furman at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
Hopke, who enters the tournament’s final round in a tie for eighth place, registered three birdies on Saturday to conclude the second round four strokes back of leader Ollie Schniederjans (-8) of Georgia Tech, who fired a 67 in the opening round and a 69 on Saturday to move into the lead.
Sophomore Preston Cole (+6) shot a 1-over 73 with birdies on 6 and 12 to tie for 46th place following Saturday’s round, while freshman Bryce Howell (+8) also notched two birdies to card a 79, tying for 60th after the second round.
Junior Michael Borton (+10) enters Sunday’s round tied for 70th after recording a 77 with two birdies in the second round, and sophomore Preston Heyward (+13) is tied for 78th following Saturday’s round. Redshirt freshman Rob Knight, playing as an individual, carded a 75 in the tournament’s second round.
Host Mercer (-20) surged into the lead with a 272 on Saturday, bypassing Georgia Tech (-19), who moved into second place, and Virginia Tech (-11), who dropped into third. The Paladins (+19) stand in 11th place out of 14 teams following the second day of competition.
Furman will tee off of No. 10 Sunday at 8:50 a.m. in the tournament’s final round.
