UNCG second at Bridgestone Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team fired a 2-over-par 290 in round one of the 2013 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Saturday afternoon to sit in second place overall, just two strokes back, at the Grandover Resort East Course.

The tournament will conclude Sunday with 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The event was shortened to a 36-hole event after frost delayed the start of play Saturday.

The Spartans posted a 290 to sit just two back of North Carolina, which carded an even-par 288 Saturday. The field at the 2013 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate features 10 teams ranked in the top 100 in the nation, including the Spartans at No. 64. Chattanooga and Virginia Tech are tied for third overall with a 3-over-par 291, while NC State is fifth at 4-over-par 292.

UNCG freshman Carter Jenkins continued his dominant play, as he is also in second place after posting a 3-under-par 69 in round one. Jenkins is just one shot back of the lead held by Henry Do of North Carolina at 4-under-par 68. The two will be paired together in the foursome that will start on hole No. 1 Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Jenkins posted six birdies on the afternoon to go along with two bogeys on the East Course.

Junior Roy Dixon and sophomore Taylor Coalson are tied for 11th overall with 1-over-par 73s. Dixon was 1-under through 12 holes, while Coalson birdied No. 17 to reach 1-over par down the stretch.

Freshman Jake McGlone rounded out the Spartans’ top four scores, as he is tied for 36th with a 3-over-par 75. McGlone rallied for two birdies in his final four holes, picking up strokes on No. 18 and No. 2 to post the 75. Sophomore Luke Haithcock rounded out the lineup with  4-over-par 76.

Junior Alex Ehlert and redshirt freshman Will Thomas played as individuals Saturday and posted scores of 6-over 78.

 

Chattanooga tied for third at Bridgestone Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is tied for third with No. 10 Virginia Tech at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at Grandover Resort. The Mocs and Hokies each shot 3-over-par 291 on a cold day in the North Carolina Piedmont.

Chris Robb, the event’s defending champ, continued his fine play at Grandover’s East Course with a 2-under-par 70.

Robb’s minus-2 tally is his second best of the season. It also makes him 11-under through 72 holes at the course. He is currently third, two shots behind North Carolina’s Henry Do.

Fellow Scot Ewan Scott is tied for fourth, one behind Robb at 71 (-1). He is minus-8 over his last 90 holes.

Wes Gosselin and Davis Bunn rounded out the team scoring. Gosselin shot 74, while Bunn recorded a 76. Liam Johnston had the drop score with a 77. Individual Stuart Thomas turned in a 75 Saturday.

North Carolina has the lead at the tourney’s midpoint. The Tar Heels shot an even-par 288. UNCG is second at 290, with Chattanooga and Virginia Tech right behind. NC State is another shot back in fifth at 292.

Sunday’s second round starts at 10:45 a.m. for the Mocs. Chattanooga opens play on No. 10 with Bunn starting off, with Robb (10:54), Scott (11:03), Weilguni (11:12) and Thomas (11:21) following. UTC is paired with Louisiana Tech and Texas State.
