Elon ties for fifth at Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – In its third of four fall tournaments, the Elon men's golf team recorded its third consecutive top-five showing as the Phoenix finished tied for fifth at the 18-team Old Dominion / OBX Collegiate on Tuesday.  The maroon and gold's final total was 859 (287-282-290).

Pacing the Phoenix was John Somers, who recorded 13 birdies over his three rounds of play to tie for fourth individually with a 4-under mark of 209 (70-69-70).

Somers was followed by Will DiIanni, who posted his best round of the tournament on Tuesday.  DiIanni wound up in a tie for 27th out of 93 participants with a three-round score of 217 (74-71-72).

Thanks to 13 birdies, Jeff Krieger placed in a tie for 36th after carding a 220 (72-71-77) over his three rounds.

Jack Adkins' 221 (71-71-79) earned him a tie for 46th.  Also with a 221 was Stuart Kaufman, who posted rounds of 77, 73 and 71.

Marshall's Logan Lagodich earned medalist honors following a one-hole playoff with Old Dominion's Jamison Randall and VCU's Rocky Khara.  All three had finished with three-round scores of 207.

No. 78 VCU rallied from fourth place to claim the team title with an 843.  The Rams recorded a 271 on Tuesday, the lowest round by any team in the event.

Between the Phoenix and top spot on the leaderboard were Maryland (852), No. 96 Hartford (853) and Marshall (857).  Elon tied for fifth with host Old Dominion.

The final event of the fall for the maroon and gold will come Nov. 3-5 at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic hosted by Charleston Southern in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Wofford finishes eighth at Pinetree Intercollegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior Brent McKenzie shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday in the final round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate, completing the tournament tied for 15th place with a three-round total of 6-over-par 222 and leading the Wofford College men’s golf team to an eighth-place finish.

Wofford carded a final-round 13-over-par 301 for a three-round total of 38-over-par 902 (300-301-301). The Terriers finished two strokes behind seventh-place Florida Gulf Coast (+36, 900) and six strokes ahead of both Samford and Ball State (+44, 908). Kennesaw State won the tournament at 8-over-par 872, while Winthrop’s Taylor Dickson shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 to win the individual title at 3-under par.

The 12-team, 69-man field competed in overcast conditions with temperatures ranging from the mid-to-upper 60s at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club. All five Terriers began final-round play at the 10th tee and took advantage of the back nine with a team total of 1-under par heading to the front. The hot play did not continue and the Terriers combined to shoot 10-over par on the final three holes for the eighth-place finish.

Freshman Andrew Novak completed his tournament with a final-round 3-over-par 75. Novak had three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine, followed by no birdies and four bogeys on the front. Even-par through 15 holes on his final round, the freshman had an unfortunate finish with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 7, 8 and 9. Novak took a tie for 26th place with a 9-over-par 225.

Junior Brannon Hudson also carded a final-round 3-over 75 and tied for 40th at 13-over-par 229.

Senior Chandler Brazeal posted two final-round birdies, six bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4, 440-yard 13th hole to shoot 7-over-par 79 and complete the tournament tied for 37th place at 12-over par.

Last week’s co-champion of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate, George Perkovich, earned a tie for 51st place at 19-over-par 235. Perkovich had three birdies, six bogeys and a triple bogey for a final-round 6-over 78.

The Wofford men’s golf team competes again in two weeks at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, Nov. 3-5, in Cashiers, N.C.

 

Samford ties for ninth at Pinetree Intercollegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Samford University men’s golf team wrapped up play in the 2013 Pinetree Intercollegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs finished the 54-hole, two-day competition tied for ninth place. Samford concluded the event with a total team score of 908 (295-305-308).

Tournament-host Kennesaw State repeated as team champions as the 43rd-ranked Owls competed on their home course at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club.

The 12-team field also consisted of Akron, Ball State, Florida Gulf Coast, Indiana, Louisville, Northern Illinois, Troy, UT-Pan American, Winthrop and Wofford.

Kennesaw State entered Tuesday’s final round four strokes behind Akron and turned in the low round of the day, posting a 4-over par 292 to finish the 54-hole event at 8-over par 872 to record an eight-shot victory over Winthrop (880). Louisville (883) was third and followed by Akron (884) and Indiana (885).

Individually, Winthrop’s Taylor Dickson carded a 54-hole score of 3-under-par 213 and posted a two-stroke victory over the trio of teammates Zach Seabolt and Trevor Sluman of Louisville and Ryan Harris of Akron, which finished tied for second at 1-under-par 215.

Samford’s Zach Hughes and Garrett Moores both concluded the tournament with identical 54-hole scores of 9-over-par 225. Moores opened the competition with a brilliant 1-over-par 73, while Hughes’ best round of the event also occurred Monday with a second-round tally of 74.

Hughes and Moores both finished the tournament tied for 26th place in the individual standings.

Samford senior William Catanzaro concluded Tuesday’s competition with a three-round total of 230 (73-79-78), while sophomore Chris Clouser followed with a score of 231 (74-79-78) and sophomore Mac Hennessy posted a 54-hole mark of 232 (78-77-77).

The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action Nov. 3-5, as the Bulldogs head to Cashiers, N.C., for the 2013 Western Carolina Hummingbird Intercollegiate.
