Elon second at Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Despite knocking five strokes off of its first-round score during Monday's second round of play at the Old Dominion / OBX Collegiate, the Elon men's golf team dropped to second place following two rounds of action.

The Phoenix will enter Tuesday's final round just two strokes back of 96th-rated Hartford for the top spot on the team leaderboard. Elon's two-day score sits at 569 (287-282), while Hartford's mark is 567 (290-277).

The rest of the top five in the 18-team field consists of Marshall (570), No. 78 VCU (572) and Radford (573).

John Somers continued to keep his score below par as the senior carded a mark of 69 (-2) during his second 18 holes of the tournament. Somers will begin the final round in a tie for fourth with a 3-under 139 (70-69). Through his first 36 holes, Somers has recorded one eagle and nine birdies.

At even par following two rounds is Jack Adkins (71-71=142). Adkins sits 11th in the field of 93 players after posting 26 pars in 36 holes.

Just one stroke back in a tie for 12th is Jeff Krieger, who has a tournament-best 10 birdies. His score of 143 was obtained thanks to rounds of 72 and 71.

Will DiIanni's 145 (74-71) has him in a tie for 25th, while Stuart Kaufman sits in a tie for 52nd with a mark of 150 (77-73) with a round remaining.

Marshall’s Logan Lagodich is the individual leader at a 6-under 136 (69-67).

 

Wofford ninth at Pinetree Intercollegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Wofford College men’s golf team competed in the first two rounds of the Pinetree Intercollegiate on Monday at the Pinetree Country Club, compiling a 36-hole total of 25-over-par 601, which is good enough for ninth place.

The Terriers were consistent with rounds of 12-over 300 and 13-over 301, and are just a stroke behind eighth-place Samford (+24) and four behind seventh-place Florida Gulf Coast (+21). Leading the tournament is Akron at even par with back-to-back rounds of 288.

Heading the Terriers at 5-over-par are seniors Brent McKenzie and Chandler Brazeal. McKenzie fired an opening-round 4-over-par 76 and a second-round 1-over-par 73, while Brazeal carded a 3-over 75 and 2-over 74. The two seniors are tied for 24th place.

McKenzie’s day included five birdies, three of which came in consecutive fashion on the front nine of his second round to go out with a 3-under 33. The senior took advantage of the par-3, 221-yard fourth hole, birdieing it both times.

Brazeal had four birdies, but his day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 505-yard 16th hole. The eagle got Brazeal back to even on his second round before he bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18. In total, Brazeal was 3-under-par on No. 16, adding a birdie on the par-5 during his first round. The birdie gave Brazeal two in a row, as he also sank one on the par-4, 454-yard 15th.

Freshman Andrew Novak put together rounds of 2-over 74 and 4-over 76 and is tied for 32nd at 6-over par. Novak’s first round included three birdies and five bogeys, while his second was a little rougher with only two birdies compared to six bogeys.

Junior Brannan Hudson eagled the par-5, 513-yard 11th hole and is tied for 44th place at 10-over par. George Perkovich – the co-champion of last week’s Donald Ross Intercollegiate – is tied for 53rd place at 13-over par after a second-round 10-over 82.

Tuesday’s final-round tee times will be split between holes No. 1 and 10. The Terriers will tee off in the final five groups to start at the 10th hole, beginning with Perkovich at 9:14 a.m.
