Furman 10th at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Junior Michael Borton (E) carded a 70 on Saturday to lead Furman in the second round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the par-72 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges. Borton recorded three birdies on the day to move into a tie for 24th place heading into Sunday’s final round.

Freshman Bryce Howell (-5) paces the Paladins on the individual leaderboard, entering the tournament’s final round in a tie for sixth after shooting an even 72 on Saturday. Howell, who registered birdies on 8, 10, and 13, is four strokes behind leaders Derek Bard (-9) of Virginia and Scott Vincent (-9) of Virginia Tech.

Sophomore Wehman Hopke (+4) fired a 75 with two birdies on Saturday to enter the final round tied for 46th, while sophomore Preston Heyward (+9) also shot a 75 in the second round, notching four birdies on the day, including a birdie on No. 8 and consecutive birdies on 10 and 11. Heyward is tied for 60th entering Sunday’s round. Sophomore Preston Cole (+15) shot a 79 on Saturday to move into 70th place.

Seventeenth-ranked Kent State (-12) surged into the lead after registering a 279 in Saturday’s round to take a two-stroke lead over 13th-ranked Virginia Tech (-10). No. 14 Virginia (-9) stands in third place entering Sunday’s final round.

The Paladins (+8), who rank 10th out of 14 teams entering the tournament’s final round, will tee off of No. 10 Sunday at 10 a.m.
