Georgia Southern surges to fifth at Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Charlie Martin and Scott Wolfes each placed in the top 10 and the Eagles carded a 2-under par round of 282 as a team to charge up the leaderboard and finish fifth at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday.

Martin and Wolfes both recorded 2-under 69s, while Hayden Anderson shot a 1-under 70.

Martin was steady throughout the round, posting three birdies and one bogey on the day, and the sophomore finished fifth individually, his best career finish, at 4-under par for the tournament.

Wolfes had a chance at a huge day after playing the first 16 holes at 4-under par. After birdies on 14 and 15 and a par on 16, the sophomore bogeyed 17 and 18 for his 69. He tied for eighth at 1-under for the tournament.

Anderson built on Saturday’s round of 72 by tearing up the back nine Sunday. After finishing the front nine at 2-over, the junior birdied holes 11, 14 and 18 for a 70.

Henry Mabbett carded a 2-over 73 for the best round of his young career as an Eagle. The redshirt freshman came out of the gates well, getting a birdie on the first hole and finishing the front nine at 1-over.

He played the first eight holes of the back nine at 1-over but slipped on 18 and carded a bogey.

Caleb Morris rounded out the group with a 77, and Christian Humber, playing as an individual, had a tough Sunday after working his way into a tie for 20th Saturday. The junior posted an 81.

The Eagles have a couple of weeks off before returning to action at the AutoTrader Collegiate Classic in Duluth, Ga., Oct. 15.

 

College of Charleston finishes eighth at Mason Rudolph

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The College of Charleston men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the 2012 Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Junior Alex Ellis led the Cougars in the final round with an even-par 71 as CofC shot an 11-over 295 as a team. For the tournament, the Cougars finished at 21-over par (285-293-295=873).

Host Vanderbilt won the tournament with a 5-under total team score. Oklahoma (+2) and Mississippi (+6) rounded out the top three.

Sophomore Zach Munroe was the Cougars’ top individual for the tournament, as he shot rounds of 68-70-73=211 (-2) and finished tied for seventh place.

Up next, the Cougars travel to Macon, Ga., Oct. 5-7 for the Brickyard Invitational hosted by Mercer.

 

Davidson takes ninth at Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – For the second consecutive day, John Skeadas carded Davidson’s lowest round as the Wildcats finished ninth at the 2012 Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt.

The 54-hole event was played on the par-71, 7,100-yard Legends Club South Course layout.

Skeadas’ finished with a three-day total of 218 (75-70-73) to tie for 23rd out of 84 competitors.

Just two strokes separated Richard Fountain (221 / T-36th), Todd Eckstein (222 / T-40th) and Sam Echikson (223 / T-47th), while David Sargent finished with a 233 (73-79-81).

Davidson (292-293-296=881) finished with its second top-10 in as many events this fall.

The host Commodores captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 845 (-7), while Georgia State’s Jonathan Grey won the individual crown at seven-under.

Davidson will enjoy a two-week break before heading to the Fire Invitational on Oct. 8-9.

 

Chattanooga 15^th at PING/Golfweek Preview, Robb tied for second

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Junior Chris Robb shot a two-under par 68 to lead the Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team to a 15-over par 295 at the PING/Golfweek Preview. Robb’s minus-two is tied for second, while UTC is 15th in a power-packed field.

Robb’s 68 was a study in consistency. He carded four birdies and 12 pars against just two bogeys. He is one shot off Tom Berry’s (San Diego State) lead.

Liam Johnston and Steven Fox each shot three-over par 73s. Alex Ratliff and Kory Webb tallied twin 81s to round out the scoring.

UNLV is the team leader at plus-one (281). UCLA is second at 282, while New Mexico, Georgia Tech and San Diego State are tied for third at 287.

Monday’s second 18 starts at 9:20 a.m. for the Mocs off No. 10. Chattanooga is again paired with Alabama and Texas A&M. Webb starts off, followed by Ratliff (9:30), Johnston (9:40), Fox (9:50) and Robb (10).
