UNCG sits 12^th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team opened the 2012-13 season on a beautiful Saturday afternoon posting a team score of 596 in two 18-hole rounds at the Finley Golf Club. The Spartans opened with a round-one score of 13-over par 301 before following it up with a round-two score of 7-over par 295.

Freshman Luke Haithcock paced the Spartans as he sits tied for 19th place after his first 36 holes of his collegiate career at 1-over par. He opened his day firing a 1-over 73 as he posted three birdies and just two bogeys before recording a double bogey on the 18th hole to move over par. He followed that up with a similar outing in round two as he shot an even-par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys in the solid outing.

Senior Robert Hoadley sits in a tie for 29th place as he posted a 3-over 147 (75-72). Headley recorded three birdies on the afternoon, including a pair in his even-par 72 second-round output. Freshman Taylor Coalson is in a tie for 55th place overall after posting a two-round score of 151 (75-76). Coalson started his UNCG career with a bang as he tallied an eagle on his third collegiate hole, firing a three on the par-5 third hole at 560 yards.

UNCG sits in a tie for 12th overall at 20-over 596, matching Maryland. Duke leads the event by eight strokes as the Blue Devils shot a 9-under 567. NC State's Albin Choi is the individual leader after 36 holes as he fired a 7-under (66-71) for the day.

Furman 14^th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Furman’s Johnny Kyger fired rounds of 73 and 76 to pace the Paladins over 36 holes on the opening day of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday at the par-72 Finley Golf Club.

Kyger, at five-over par, grabbed a share of 44th place, while the Paladins (+34) sit in 14th after rounds of 309 and 301.  A native of Salisbury, N.C., Kyger birdied two of his first four holes in the morning round en route to a one-over 73 before bouncing back from two bogeys and a double bogey in the first seven holes of his afternoon round to post a four-over 76.

Senior Matt Brown (+6) moved into 47th place by playing his final 14 holes of the day at even par to shoot a second-round 73.

Duke followed up a three-under 285 in the morning with a six-under 282 in the second round to open up an eight-stroke lead over Charlotte (-1) and North Carolina (-1), who are tied for second after 36 holes.  UNCW, NC State and East Tennessee State are tied for fourth place at seven-over par through two rounds.

NC State’s Albin Choi (-7) burst into the lead with an opening-round 66 and fired a second-round 71 to hold a three-stroke advantage over three golfers tied for second at four-over par.

Final-round action at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate is set to get under way on Sunday morning.
