Georgia Southern’s Wolfes
fires 67, leads The Invitational at The Ocean Course
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Georgia Southern sophomore golfer Scott Wolfes carded a 5-under par 67 to
move into first place after two rounds of The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Wolfes, who started the day tied for fifth, has a
three-stroke lead over Florida's Tyler McCumber and a four-stroke advantage
over Gator TJ Vogel. Wolfes played a bogey-free round and had four birdies on
the front nine. He also birdied hole 11 to finish the back nine 1-under. He's
4-under for the tournament on the course that hosted the PGA Championship just
over a month ago.
The Eagles fell a few spots into a tie for 10th in the team
standings with Texas State. Florida leads the tournament with a 577, followed
by Houston (597) and College of Charleston (600).
Caleb Morris shot a 79 and struggled on the back nine, and
Will Evans posted an 80. Charlie Martin had trouble on the last three holes and
finished with an 82. Blake Olson finished with an 86. Henry Mabbett, who is
playing as an individual, carded a 79 after posting a 79 Sunday.
Tuesday’s final round starts at 7:30 a.m., and Wolfes will
tee off at 8:20 a.m.
Cougars third at The
Invitational at The Ocean Course
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -
Sophomore Zach Munroe shot even par in the second round to keep the College
of Charleston men's golf team in the hunt at The Invitational at The Ocean
Course.
Munroe is currently in a three-way tie for fourth with AJ
Crouch of Florida and Charlie Bull of Akron. He moved up 10 spots on the
individual leaderboard after carding an opening-round 74, which put him in a
tie for 14th. Munroe, a transfer from the University of North Carolina
competing in his first tournament as a Cougar, made four birdies, including
three on the front nine.
In the team standings, both Houston (+21) and CofC (+24)
trail defending invitational champion Florida, who leads by 20 strokes with a
two-round total of 577 (+1) after posting a 288 on the second day of play - the
lowest team-round of the tournament.
Individually, Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern is the
current leader after firing a five-under par 67 in the second round.
Additionally for the Cougars, junior Alex Ellis sits in a
three-way tie for 17th (+6) and senior Neil Gowan is in a two-way tie for 20th
(+7).
Tournament play concludes Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with CofC
teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
Davidson seventh at
The Invitational at The Ocean Course
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Led by Richard Fountain’s even-par 72, the Davidson men’s golf team sits in seventh
place following Monday’s second round of The Invitational at the Ocean Course,
site of the 2012 PGA Championship.
After carding a 76 in the opening round, Fountain birdied
four of his first 10 holes Monday morning to move into the top five on the
individual leaderboard. The junior gave a few strokes back on his inward nine
before finishing the day in a tie for eighth out of 96 competitors.
Samuel Echikson backed yesterday’s 77 with a two-over 74 and
will enter the final round tied for 20th, while Todd Eckstein is tied for 36th
following a 79. Also competing for the Wildcats are John Skeadas III (T-44th),
David Sargent (T-44th) and Alex Nianouris (T-59th).
As a team, Davidson (306-301 = 607) improved on Sunday’s
round by five strokes and will enter the final 18 holes just 10 shots out of
second place, currently held by Houston.
Florida, which entered the second round with a four-shot
advantage, stretched its lead to a commanding 20 strokes with an even-par round
of 288.
Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern fired a tournament-low 67
(-5) to grab a two shot lead over the Gators’ Tyler McCumber, who sits at
two-under 142 (72-70).
The 2012 field of teams includes: Akron, College of
Charleston, South Florida, USC Aiken, Mercer, Houston, Florida, UAB, SFA,
Georgia Southern, UTA, USC Upstate, Davidson, St. Johns and Texas State.
Hosted by College of Charleston, Tuesday’s final round will
begin at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring for the tournament will be available via

Wofford tied for
seventh at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, S.C. –
The Wofford men’s golf team is tied for seventh after the opening day with a
36-hole score of 578 at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate on the
par-72 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
Charles Moore led Wofford with rounds of 72 and 70 for a 142,
good enough for a tie for 10th place.
Cory Taylor, 73-72=245, and Brent McKenzie, 71-75=145, are tied for
29th, while Brannan Hudson is in a tie for 36th with a 74-72=146. Chandler Brazeal carded a 76-74=150.
Gardner-Webb leads the event with a 564 and is followed by
Old Dominion at 568.
The tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes Tuesday
morning.
Furman 10th at Raines
Development Group Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, S.C. –
The Furman men’s golf team posted rounds of 286 and 297 to hold 10th place
after 36 holes at the season-opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate
on Monday at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina.
Senior Johnny Kyger of Salisbury, N.C., paced the Paladins
with an opening-round two-under par 70 followed by a second round 75. He is tied for 29th place with Paladin
freshman Preston Cole, a Greer, S.C., native , who posted an even-par first
round before shooting 73 in the afternoon.
Fifth-year senior Anthony Aloi, who redshirted last season,
returned to the Furman lineup on Monday and posted back-to-back rounds of 73 to
hold a share of 36th place.
Gardner-Webb (-12) holds the 36-hole lead by four strokes
over Old Dominion (-8) with Georgia College (-6) in third place. Loyola (Md.)
and North Alabama rounded out the top five in the 16-team field.
Old Dominion’s Brandon Lemp and Gardner-Webb’s Matthew
Yelverton are tied for the individual lead at eight-under par through 36 holes.
Final round action is slated to begin Tuesday morning.
Appalachian State 11th
at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, S.C. –
Appalachian State University’s men's golf team opened the fall 2012 campaign
with 36 holes on Monday at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate. The
Mountaineers carded a 294-291=585 (+9) to stand in 11th place heading into
Tuesday's final round.
Junior Casey Komline led the charge with an even 72-72=144
(E) to stand in a tie for 23rd after two rounds. Senior Josh Nichols was right
behind in 29th at 71-74=145 (+1).
John Michael Cole ranked third for the Apps with a 78-71=149
(+5) to tie in 51st, while Lee Mitchell made his Black & Gold debut with a
76-74=160 (+6) to tie for 57th.
Senior Jay Brown tied for 70th with a 75-77=152 (+8).
Gardner-Webb leads the tournament with a 564 (-12), four
strokes ahead of Old Dominion. GWU's Matt Yelverton is tied with Loyola
Maryland's Brendan Lamp for the lead at 136 (-8).
Several Southern Conference teams are represented, including
seventh-place Wofford at 578 (+2), 10th-place Furman at 583 (+7) and 14th-place
Elon at 590 (+14).
The teams return to the Country Club of South Carolina on Tuesday
morning for the final round.
Elon tied for 14th
at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, S.C. –
Rounds of 293 and 297 on the opening day of the 2012-13 men's golf season has
the Elon Phoenix program in a tie for 14th after two rounds of the Raines
Development Group Intercollegiate on Monday.
Elon's two-round mark of 590 has the Maroon and Gold tied
with Charleston Southern. Gardner-Webb's
564 (283-281) leads the field with a round to play.
Among the 85 golfers in the field, Elon's John Somers is
tied for 36th individually with a 146.
Somers tallied a two-under par 70 over his first 18 holes before carding
a 76 in round two. His nine birdies on
the day are tied for the second-most in the field.
Two Phoenix players are tied for 45th - Matthew Brady and
Raphael Higuet. Both shot 148s on day
one of the season.
Jack Adkins posted 27 pars on his way to shooting a 149
(76-73) and tying for 51st with a round to play.
Rounding out the Elon participants was Will Dilanni, who
posted a 151 (75-76) in his first collegiate action.
Gardner-Webb's Matthew Yelverton (69-67) and Loyola (Md.)'s
Brendan Lemp (66-70) are tied for the individual lead with a 136.
The final round of the tournament will be contested on
Tuesday at The Country Club of South Carolina.
Western Carolina tied
for eighth at Golfweek Program Challenge
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Western Carolina slipped into a two-way tie for eighth place following the
completion of Monday's second round at the season-opening Golfweek Program
Challenge being held at the par-72, 6,940-yard True Blue Plantation Course. The
Catamounts shot 293 as a team to be in the clubhouse at five-under par 581 through
36 of the 54 holes, knotted with Boston College and just nine strokes off the
pace.
WCU continues to be led by sophomore J.T. Poston, who shot
even-par 72 on Monday to stand in a four-way tie for 10th place at two-under 142.
Poston turned at one-over after bogeying his first hole of the day, and slipped
to two-over with a bogey on the par-3, No. 11. However, the Hickory, N.C.,
closed his round with birdies on two of the final seven holes to finish even.
Redshirt senior Kyle Wilson and junior Greg Bunner are both
amidst a four-way tie for 24th place with identical scores of 146. Bunner fired
a one-over 73 on Monday, while Wilson was a stroke off at two-over 74. Bunner,
from Gastonia, N.C., made the turn at three-over after a trio of bogeys on the
front nine. He finished, however, with a pair of birdies to shoot one-over par
for the day. In the first two rounds, Bunner has played the back nine at
two-under par.
Wilson countered five bogeys in his second round with three
birdies to close the day at two-over.
Senior Steven Smith was poised to finish his round at
one-over par before a triple-bogey on the par-4 18th relegated him to four-over
for the day and five-over 149 for the tournament, tied for 38th. Rounding out
the Catamount side is true freshman Tyler Lail, who trimmed three strokes off
his opening round to shoot two-over 74 on Monday. Lail is in 46th place
overall at 151 through the first 36 holes of his collegiate career.
Starting the day in second place after the opening round,
Campbell advanced to the top of the leader board to pace the 12-team field on
the men's side with a two-day total of 572, just two strokes ahead of
Jacksonville State (574) in the runner-up position. Campbell has three golfers
among the top 16 individuals. First-round leader James Madison is in third
place, a combined four strokes in arrears, with Troy (577) and Central Arkansas
(578) rounding out the top five.
Trey Smith of JMU has posted rounds of 68 and 67 to lead the
60-golfer field by two strokes over Campbell's Grant Houser - both of which
were tied for third after the opening 18 holes. First-round leader Kyle
Driscoll of Northern Iowa slipped into a two-way tie for eighth place.
The overall program challenge winner will be decided by
combining the men's and women's scores with the lowest total claiming the event
title. Defending event champion Campbell enters the final round with a
commanding 34-stroke advantage over runner-up Central Arkansas. WCU is
currently in sixth place in the 12-school field.
The final round of the Golfweek Program Challenge gets under
way at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday with set tee times on both the front and back nine.
Paired with UMKC and Boston College, WCU's first golfers hit the links on the
back nine in the first group.
