POINT CLEAR, Ala. - Samford's Casey O'Toole, who will be a senior member of the Bulldogs' men's golf team this fall, earned the title at the Alabama State Match Play Tournament over the weekend as he outplayed Thomas Sutton on the first hole of a playoff.

After ending regulation tied, O'Toole and Sutton returned to the first hole at the Lakewood Golf Club to begin the extra play. O'Toole blasted his second shot to within seven feet of the green on the par-5 first and then chipped his third shot in from 80 feet. O'Toole's eagle on the first hole secured the championship victory after Sutton was limited to a four-stroke birdie.

O'Toole, a native of Oneonta, Ala., and a participant in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, was the No. 2-seeded player in the prestigious tournament and defeated Haymes Snedeker, who is the older brother of PGA Tour player Brandt Snedeker, by a score of 2 up in the semifinal round of play. Snedeker was also the winner of the 2009 Big Break Challenge, which is aired annually on the Golf Channel.

The Alabama State Match Play Tournament was O'Toole's final event of the summer before returning to Samford for the beginning of fall classes on Aug. 27.
