Wofford Leads SoCon Schools at Coca-Cola Invitational

Host Terriers Take Fourth at Coca-Cola Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's golf team rallied to finish fourth led by Chandler Brazeal at the Coca-Cola Invitational at the par-72, 6,648 yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

The Terriers sat in sixth after the opening two rounds, but rallied on the final 18-holes to finish in fourth with a 286-292-291-869.

Wofford's second team took 15th place after a 300-293-301-897.

Charleston Southern won the event with a 282-289-279-841. Their 279 final round tied a tournament record for low team 18-hole round and broke the record for lowest round over the final 18-holes of the tournament. They also set the tournament record for best team finish at 841 and best team relation to par finish at -23.

Brazeal turned in a 70-72-72-214 to claim 11th and pace the Terriers individually. Cory Taylor finished 18th with a 74-73-69-214. His 69 in the final round was the first under-70 round turned in by the freshman. Brent McKenzie shot a 69-72-75-216 and also finished in 18th. Brannan Hudson carded a 73-76-75-224, while Mark Joye finished with a 74-75-77-226.

The second Wofford team was led by Brent Whitehead who fired a 79-69-72-220, and Alan King who scored a 78-73-74-225. Zack Capps followed with a 74-77-76-227, and Hayes Brown carded a 76-74-79-229. Chuck Moore shot a 72-79-80-231.

Campbell's Vaita Guillaume took the top individual spot with a 69-64-71-204. His 64 in round two set a new tournament 18-hole low and second round tournament low. His 54-hole total of 204 also set a new tournament record and his -12 set a new tournament relation to par finish record.

Wofford will head to the Southern Conference Championship in Daniel Island, S.C. on April 15 through April 17 for their next tournament.

 

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF TAKES EIGHTH PLACE AT 24TH ANNUAL COCA-COLA INVITATIONAL

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team carded a total team score of 288 in Tuesday's final round of competition at the 24th Annual Coca-Cola Invitational as the Bulldogs jumped into a tie for eighth place at the 54-hole, two-day event held at The Country Club of Spartanburg, a par-72, 6,648-yard course.

The 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational was hosted by Wofford University and consisted of the following 17 teams: Samford, Appalachian State, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Davidson, East Tennessee State, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, James Madison, Longwood, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Stetson, USC Upstate and Wofford.

Samford finished the tournament with a final team score of 872 (288-296-288) on Tuesday and concluded the 54-hole competition tied with High Point (285-291-296=872) for eighth place.

The Bulldogs doubled their best performance of the two-day event in the final round and finished the 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational only four strokes out of fourth place. Samford, with its 54-hole tally of 872, nearly pulled off a last-day rally to catch the tournament-host and fourth-place finisher Wofford at 869 (286-292-291).

Charleston Southern earned the championship title of the 17-team competition by 10 strokes with a tournament-record mark of 841 (282-280-279). The previous record of 847 was set in 2010 by East Tennessee State. Charleston Southern's 23-under-par performance was also a new tournament record.

Finishing 10 strokes behind the leader was second-place East Tennessee State with a three-round total of 851 (285-286-280). Campbell University rounded out the top three by carding a 54-hole score of 861 (288-283-290).

In the individual standings, Campbell's Vaita Cuillaume won the championship title with a stellar 12-under-par 204 (69-64-71). Guillaume's 204 proved to be a tournament record for 54-holes as he broke the previous record of 205 that was set by Michael Capone of Wake Forest in 1999. His 12-under-par finish also broke Capone's record of 11-under-par in relation to par finish.

Samford's Casey O'Toole turned in a brilliant tournament this week as he concluded play with a 3-under-par total of 213 (74-72-67). His final-round tally of 67 on Tuesday was the team's best score of the tournament. O'Toole, a native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the tournament tied for eighth place in the individual standings.

Along with O'Toole's stellar performance at the 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational, the Bulldogs' true freshman Zach Hughes also turned in a solid score of 2-over-par 218 (72-72-74) on Tuesday. Samford's up-and-coming native of Mobile, Ala., finished tied for 21st place in the individual standings.

The Bulldogs' scoring Tuesday was rounded out by William Catanzaro (73-77-71=221), Bill Nabors (69-77-79=225) and Drew Aimone (76-75-76=227).

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action April 18-20 as the Bulldogs head to Daniel Island, S.C., for the all-important 2012 Southern Conference Championship to be held at the prestigious Ralston Creek Golf Course.

 

Davidson Golf Finishes 12th at Coca-Cola Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Davidson men's golf team finished in 12th place with a 54-hole score of 888 (296+295+297) Tuesday after completing the Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by Wofford at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Junior John Skeadas matched his second-round, one-under 71 in the final round to move into a tie for 25th place at 219, three-over-par. Freshman Ralph Blasey placed in a tie for 45th place at 223 (72+74+77), seven-over-par.

Sophomore Richard Fountain and freshman Todd Eckstein both fired final-round 75's to finish at 225 (72+78+75) and 227 (77+75+75), respectively. Senior Jackson Taylor finished in between the two at 226 (75+75+76).

Charleston Southern won the tournament in the 18-team field with a 54-hole tournament record of 841. The previous record was held by ETSU, in 2010 and was an 847. It's -23 relation to par finish is also a new tournament record.

Vaita Guillaume of Campbell finished at 204 (69+64+71) for a new tournament record individual medalist finish for 54-holes. He broke the record that was set by Michael Capone of Wake Forest back in 1999. His -12 finish breaks the record held by Capone of -11 in relation to par finish.

Davidson finished four-strokes out of the top-10 and behind Southern Conference foes Wofford (fourth place, 869) and Samford (tie-eighth, 895). The Cats' placed ahead of Appalachian State (13th, 892), but leads Elon (16th, 596).

The tournament was the final tune-up before the Southern Conference tournament, which begins Sunday at the Daniel Island Club in Daniel Island, S.C.

 

ASU Men's Golf Finishes 13th at Coca-Cola Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf carded a 296-293-303=892 (+28) to place 13th at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

The Mountaineers were led by Darren Cook, who carded a 70-70-79=219 (+3) to place 25th on the strength of 13 birdies. The senior had been tied for fifth place after 36 holes as Monday's rounds of 70 matched a season low for the Boone native.

Dustin Hudson finished strong in Tuesday's final round on the strength of two eagles with a 76-77-69=222 (+6), good for a tie for 41st place in the field of 90 golfers. He was followed closely by 56th-place finisher Josh Nichols. The junior fired a 76-73-77=226 (+10).

Casey Komline placed 71st with a 74-74-80=228 (+12) and Jason Woodall finished with an 81-76-78=235 (+19) in a tie for 86th.

Charleston Southern claimed the team title with an 841 (-23), 10 strokes ahead of second-place ETSU. Campbell's Vaita Guillame claimed the individual medal with a tournament-record 204 (-12), including a 64 in the second round. He placed one stroke ahead of CSU's Jacobo Pastor.

From the Southern Conference, host Wofford placed fourth at 869 (+5), Samford tied in eighth at 872 (+8), Davidson edged out ASU for 12th at 888 (+24) and Elon came in 16th with an 895 (+31). Wofford's B Team placed 15th with an 894 (+30).

The Mountaineers now turn their attention to the SoCon Tournament on Daniel Island's Ralston Creek on April 15-17.

 

Phoenix Men's Golf Complete Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Elon men's golf team posted a final-round scored of 299 to finish the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational with a 54-hole mark of 895. The Phoenix finished the tournament in 16th place on the par-72, 6,648-yard Country Club of Spartanburg course.

Blayze Dipasquale posted Elon's lowest score after all three rounds of 219 (73-74-72) to tie for 25th out of the 90 golfers. His final-round mark of even-par was a team low for the tournament.

John Somers (77-74-75) and Jack Adkins (73-75-78) tied for 56th after both shooting 226. Two strokes behind Somers and Adkins in 71st was Stuart Kaufman with a three-round mark of 228 (77-73-78).

Tanner Norton rounded out the final round for the maroon and gold with a 74. The senior posted a 233 (80-79-74) for 81st overall.

The 18-team field was led by Charleston Southern, which shot a three-day score of 23-under-par 841 (282-280-279). The Bucs 54-hole score set a new team tournament record held previously by East Tennessee State. ETSU claimed second with an 851 (285-286-280), followed by Campbell with an 861 (288-283-290). Host Wofford and Longwood rounded out the top five with scores of 869 (286-292-291) and 870 (293-288-289), respectively.

The Phoenix will compete next in the Southern Conference Championship in Daniel Island, S.C., on Sunday, April 15 - Tuesday, April 17.
