Spartans Tie For Second to Highlight Men's Golf Results

Spartans finish second at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The UNCG men's golf team moved up on the final day of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate to finish tied for second place. Will Almand and Alex Ehlert turned in top-10 finishes for the Spartans, tying for eighth place.

UNCG and Old Dominion each shot a total score of 872 for the tournament, putting them just two strokes behind champion Missouri. The Spartans shot a collective 289 in the third round.

Almand and Ehlert each shot three-day totals of 217. Almand turned in another impressive round at the Kingsmill Resort-River course Tuesday, firing an even-par 71 to jump eight spots in the individual standings, while Ehlert closed with a 2-over par 73.

Kyle Sonday was not far behind as he finished tied for 12th with a 218 (71-74-73).

Robert Hoadley completed play in a tie for 20th with a final score of 221 (70-78-73). Roy Dixon finished tied for 53rd with a 226 (75-79-72) after shooting a 72 Tuesday, his best round of the tournament/

Kamito Hirai of Winthrop won the individual title. His score totaled 211, culminated by a 2-under par 69 in the final round.

UNCG will get back to action April 2 when it travels to Jackson, Miss., to compete in the Bancorp South Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss.

Men's Golf Places Tenth at C&F Bank Invite

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Appalachian State University men's golf posted a solid showing throughout the C&F Bank Invitational at Kingsmill Country Club. The Mountaineers placed tenth of 29 teams at the 54-hole event with a 285-306-301=892 (+40).

Casey Komline led Appalachian with a 12th place finish at 69-74-75=218 (+5). The sophomore notched nine birdies over the three-day event.

Josh Nichols followed closely behind with a 69-75-75=219 (+6) to finish in a tie for 15th, while Jason Woodall carded a 72-80-73-225 (+12) to end the event in 43rd place.

Dustin Hudson notched an 88th place finish at 75-77-79=231 (+18) and John Michael Cole added a 75-81-78=234 (+21) to place 104th in the field of 150 golfers.

Missouri claimed the team title at 870 (+18), just two strokes ahead of co-runners up Old Dominion and UNCG. Winthrop's Kamito Hirai took home the individual title at 211 (-2).

The Mountaineers return to action in early April at Wofford's Coca-Cola Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg. The two-day event tees off on April 9 as the Apps prepare for the Southern Conference Tournament a week later.

 


Men's Golf Finishes 13th at the Hootie

AWENDAW, S.C. - Freshman Shane Rogan fired a 1-under 71 to lead the College of Charleston men's golf team on the final day at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate Tuesday at Bulls Bay Golf Club.

The Cougars shot rounds of 295-300-310=905 (+41) to finish in 13th place and beat out Maryland and Southern Conference foe Wofford.

Rogan started and ended his round with birdies as he finished the tournament at 2-over and tied for 12th place individually.

Up next the Cougars travel to Tampa, Fla., for the Gary Koch Invitational, hosted by Kentucky and Auburn, April 7-8 at Old Memorial Golf Club.

Terriers Slip on Final Day of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Wofford men's golf team slipped to a tie for 14th after the final round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,363 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Wofford finished the 54-hole event with a 294-298-319-911. Auburn won the tournament with a 285-275-294-854.

Chandler Brazeal led the Terriers with a 78-69-78-225, while Mark Joye followed with a 74-76-78-228. Cory Taylor carded a 75-78-80-233, and Brent Whitehead turned in a 71-75-89-235. Brannan Hudson entered the clubhouse with a 74-80-83-237.

Auburn's Niclas Carlsson took the top spot of the leaderboard with a 70-70-71-211.

Wofford will take a week off before hosting The Coca-Cola Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg on April 9 through April 10.

 


Western Carolina Men's Golf Finishes 18th, Poston Tied for 15th
Catamounts travel to SoCon Championship April 15-17

Williamsburg, Va. - Led by freshman J.T. Poston's 15th-place finish, Western Carolina recorded a 16th-place finish Tuesday afternoon at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate held at the par-71, River Course at the Kingsmill Resort. Poston advanced one position in the final standings, leading the squad with a two-over, 73, on the final 18 holes.

Squads battled through clear and crisp weather conditions on the course Tuesday with winds slightly calmer than the previous days. However, the wind did blow in off the water, creating a vast temperature difference as the day wore along.

Missouri (870) led all three rounds to claim the team championship by two strokes over the second-place tie between UNC Greensboro and Old Dominion at 872. Francis Marion was third, 10 strokes off the pace at 880 with Radford rounding out the top five, two strokes in arrears at 882.

Winthrop's Kamito Hirai shot a two-under, 69, to rally from fourth place to claim individual medalist honors. Hirai bested Jace Long of Missouri and Francis Marion's Sebastian Backlund by two strokes. Emilio Cuartero, who was tied with teammate, Long, after 36 holes, was relegated to fourth after shooting a four-over 75 on Tuesday.

Both Missouri's 870 and Hirai's three-day total of 211 were tournament records.

Teeing off on the back nine, Poston made the turn at two-over par after three bogies countered with one birdie on Tuesday. The Hickory, N.C., native finished his tournament with 11-consecutive par scores, shooting two-over 73 for a three-day total of 219 - the third-lowest of the freshman's first collegiate season. Poston's 15th-place finish marks his fifth this season of 15th-place or better.

Poston finished the event with a team-leading nine birdies.

Junior Steven Smith advanced 10 spots in the final standings to finish tied for 43rd after shooting three-over, 74, on Tuesday to card 225 over the 54-hole event. He improved upon his WCU career-best three-round tournament score by a single stroke.

Sophomore Jack Walsh also improved upon his final standing, moving from a tie for 93rd into a tie for 76th over the final round after posting a four-over, 75. He countered six bogies with a pair of birdies, one-a-side on Tuesday. All told, Walsh shot 230 over the three days and was tied with classmate Greg Bunner who fired a 79 on the final round to finish at 230 as well.

Rounding out Western Carolina's scoring five was freshman Michael Turner who shot 250 over the three-day event.

Western Carolina now turns its focus to the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, scheduled for April 15-17 at the Ralston Creek Course on Daniel Island, just outside of Charleston, S.C.
