Chapman helps lead Spartans to strong finish at Snowman Getaway
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -Colin Chapman finished third overall at 3-under par, helping UNCG to a third-place team finish at the Washington State Snowman Getaway, which concluded play Tuesday at Palm Valley Golf Course.
Chapman fired a final round 73 on his way to a three round total of 213 (69-71-73). He finished five strokes behind individual medalist Mario Clements (208) of UCLA.
The Spartans shot 289 on Tuesday, finishing play at 890 (296-305-289). Only UMKC (877) and Missouri State (878) finished ahead of UNCG in the 16-team field.
"The guys played two very competitive rounds the last two rounds," said head coach Terrance Stewart. "We bounced back nicely after a sub-par performance in round one. I'm very proud of the way Colin played this week, and the team played particularly well today."
While Chapman was the only Spartan to finish in the top 20, several of his teammates enjoyed strong showings. Will Almand enjoyed the best final round of any Spartan, finishing tied for 23rd at 224 (75-78-71). Alex Ehlert tied for 44th at 228 (74-79-75).
Andy Knox also finished strong, shooting a 73 on Tuesday and ending play tied for 44th at 228 (78-77-73). Robert Hoadley, who struggled in earlier rounds, shot 72 on Tuesday and finished tied for 56th at 231 (78-81-72).
UNCG resumes play when they participate in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, March 10-11 at Pinehurst No. 6.

Cougars Finish Fifth at Charleston Shootout
HOLLYWOOD, S.C. - Junior Neil Gowan fired a 1-under 71 in the final round to lead the College of Charleston men's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the 2012 Charleston Shootout Tuesday at the Links at Stono Ferry.
The Cougars shot scores of 286-291-298=875 (+11) for the tournament and finished four shots back of third-place. Florida won the team title with a 20-under combined score. TJ Vogel from Florida was the individual medalist from Florida with a tournament record 10-under.
Gowan shot rounds of 71-73-71=215 (-1) and finished the tournament tied for ninth-place. Senior Seth Stuart, playing as an individual shot the low round of the final round with a 3-under 69 and finished the tournament tied for seventh-place at 2-under. Stuart shot rounds of 72-73-69=214 (-2).
Despite a rough final day, sophomore Parker Allen shot two of his three rounds under par and finished tied for 24th place with a 6-over total.
"I was expecting us to play a little better this week," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "I'm very pleased with how Neil and Seth played, but we need the top of our lineup to play better."
Next up, the Cougars travel to Aiken, S.C. for the Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club from Mar. 5-6.

Individuals Shine at Irish Creek Tourney
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Lance Wheeler carded a 75-67=142 (E) to tie for third place and lead five Appalachian State University men's golfers at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers did not enter a team but posted a strong showing among five individual players.
The senior's 67 on Tuesday was a career low and tied for the fifth-lowest round in Appalachian history. Wheeler's previous best was a 68 in the 2008 Sea Trail Invitational. His 36-hole total of 142 ties him with former teammate Jacob Eggers for the fourth-lowest tournament total as well.
Eric Eberspeaker also had a strong second day with a 75-70=145 (+3) to place seventh, just one stroke ahead of teammate Josh Nichols, who shot a 73-73=146 (+5) to tie for eighth place.
Drew Harris tied for 27th place with a 74-78=152 (+10) and Daniel Walsh carded a 72-81=153 (+11) to end the competition in 31st place.
Charlotte's Joe Toland won the individual medal with a 70-70=140 (-2) and host Pfeiffer came away with the team title at 291-289=580 (+12). Queens University finished second, 10 strokes behind.
The Mountaineers host Western Carolina in the annual co-ed University Cup on Wednesday at Morganton, N.C.'s Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Eagles Wrap Up John Hayt Invitiational
GSU Places 13th at North Florida
Ponte Vedra, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Golf team finished 13th Tuesday afternoon in the John Hayt Invitational, hosted by North Florida. The Eagles shot a 299 on Tuesday to put them at 907 for the tournament, plus 43. After #19 UCF lead the field after the first two days, #9 Arkansas overtook the Golden Knights to win the event, and defend its crown. Arkansas shot a 281 in the final day, bringing them to 872 and plus eight for the tournament, to win their second John Hayt Invitational for the second year in a row.
Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) tied for 15th, leading the way for the Eagles. Wolfes shot 220, which put him at plus four for the tournament. Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Drew Guffey (Bartow, Fla.) both tied for 55th, ending at 229 and plus 13. Blake Olson (Pensacola, Fla.) tied for 67th and Zach Hartman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) tied for 72nd to finish the scoring for GSU. Olson shot 232 and plus 16, while Hartman shot 235 and plus 19.
Matthew Mierzejewski (Alpharetta, Ga.), playing individually, placed 66th for the tournament. Mierzejewski shot a 76 in a final round, bringing him to 231, and plus 15 for the event.
Georgia Southern will be back in action March 5-6, when they head to Aiken, S.C. to play in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Paladins Finish 14th At John Hayt Intercollegiate
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. -- Senior Austin Reeves and junior Matt Brown each carded a final round 71 to help Furman (+44) to a 14th place finish in the John Hayt Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,977-yard Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Brown (+7), who started on the back nine, made the turn at one-over par before registering birdies on three of his final four holes to shoot one-under 71 and earn a share of 27th place. Reeves (+8), a native of Greenville, S.C., birdied five holes, including two of his last four, to post a 71 and finish with a share of 36th.
Arkansas (+8) shot a tournament-low 281 on Tuesday to successfully defend its 2011 John Hayt Intercollegiate and finish four strokes ahead of second place UCF (+12). North Florida (+13) and Coastal Carolina (+19) captured third and fourth places, respectively, while North Texas (+12) and TCU (+21) tied for fifth in the 15-team field that included nine of the top 50 teams in the country.
Julien Brun (-5) of TCU held onto his second round lead with an even par 72 on Tuesday to claim individual medalist honors just one stroke ahead of teammate Johan de Beer (-4).
Furman is back in action March 5-6, at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.
