Davidson Golf Second After Two Rounds At Wexford Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Led by sophomore Richard Fountain in third place individually, the Davidson men's golf team ranks second at 598 (+22), seven strokes off the lead, Monday at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion on the Wexford Plantation Course.
Cold and windy conditions resulted in high scores for all 17 teams competing on the 6,828-yard, par-72 layout course.
Fountain fired a three-over-par 75 in the first round in the morning, but rallied with a two-under-par 70 in the second round for a two-round score of 145 (+1). He sits two strokes off the lead with 18 holes remaining, as Damon Stephenson and Tyler Gruca, both from Georgia State, rank 1-2 on the leaderboard at 143 (-1) and 144 (E), respectively. Georgia State leads as a team with a score of 591 after 36 holes.
Sophomore Sam Echikson fired a pair of 75's for the Wildcats to finish the day in a five-way tie for 12th at 150, six-over-par, while classmate James Bramlett trails at 151 (76+75) in a nine-way tie for 17th. Freshman Ralph Blasey is one stroke behind Bramlett at 152 (77+75) in a four-way tie for 26th.
The Wildcats hold a three-stroke lead over conference rival Furman (601) and a five-stroke lead over Louisville. Southern Conference schools Western Carolina (ninth, 618), Samford (10th, 619) and Elon (17th, 641) are also competing in the tournament.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The tournament is the first of five for Davidson in the spring semester before the Southern Conference Championship.
Furman In Third Place After Two Rounds At Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- The Furman men's golf team used a tournament-best 292 on Monday afternoon to climb into third place after two rounds in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,913-yard Wexford Plantation Course.
The Paladins (+25), who were tied for fifth before their four-over par second round, trail leaders Georgia State (+15) by 10 strokes and second place Davidson (+22) by three strokes with 18 holes to play in the first tournament of the spring.
Senior Matt Broome (+3) carded rounds of 73 and 74 to grab a share of fourth place, four strokes behind leader Damon Stephenson (-1) of Georgia State. Junior Matt Brown (+6) bounced back from an opening round 80 to post a two-under 70 in round two and move into a tie for 12th place. Austin Reeves (+7), tied for 17th, and Greg Carrier (+9) notched rounds of 75 and 73, respectively, in the second round.
The 54-hole Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate concludes with final round play on Tuesday morning. The shotgun start is set for 8:30 a.m.

Elon Men's Golf Opens Spring Season at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Elon Phoenix men's golf team began its 2012 spring season with two rounds at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate tournament on Monday. The Phoenix carded a 641 (322-319) on day one to sit 17th.
In the 90-golfer field, Elon was led by #John Somers# who fired a 36-hole mark of 155 (81-74) to sit in a tie for 38th.
Tanner Norton enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for 60th after shooting a 159 (77-82) on Monday. He is followed by Blayze DiPasquale who is in a tie for 77th with a mark of 163 (83-80).
Stuart Kaufman's total of 164 (81-83) has him tied for 82nd.
Jack Adkins was Elon's fifth in the tournament, but had to withdraw.
The 17-team field is led by Georgia State which shot a 591 (297-294). A pair of SoCon teams sit second and third as Davidson posted a mark of 598 (303-295) and Furman carded a 601 (309-292). Louisville (306-297--603) and Presbyterian (309-297--606) round out the top five.
Two other SoCon rivals are in the field. Western Carolina (314-304--618) is ninth and Samford (313-306--619) sits 10th.
Georgia State's Damon Stephenson posted a one-under 143 (72-71) to lead the individual field.
WCU Men's Golf Ninth after Two Rounds at Wexford Plantation
J.T. Poston leads WCU in tie for 12th, three tied for 44th
Hilton Head Island, S.C. - Rallying with a second-round, even-par 72, on Monday afternoon, freshman J.T. Poston advanced into a five-way tie for 12th at six-over, 150, to lead Western Carolina after two rounds at the spring season-opening Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Catamounts stand ninth after 36 holes at the par 72, 6,913-yard course at 618.
The final 18 holes are scheduled for a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 am on Tuesday morning.
Poston carded an opening round six-over, 78, to start his day before rallying back to near the top of the leader board, pacing the Catamounts with a two-round score of 150.
A trio of Catamounts stand amongst seven tied for 44th overall, all shooting 12-over, 156. Junior transfer Steven Smith, making his first appearance for the Purple & Gold, is tied with classmate Trey White and sophomore Greg Bunner. Smith and White both followed-up opening round 79's with five-over, 77's in the second round, while Bunner posted a pair of 78's.
Sophomore Jack Walsh rounds out the Catamount side, shooting 79 and 81 to stand four-strokes back at 16-over, 160, in a four-way tie for 67th.
Including the top two individuals, Georgia State leads the 17-team field by seven strokes over second-place, Davidson College. The Panthers shot 15-over, 591, while the Wildcats shot 598 over the first two rounds. SoCon-foe Furman stands third, three strokes back of Davidson at 601 with Louisville (603) and Presbyterian (606) rounding out the top five.
In addition to Furman and Davidson, other conference schools in the standings are Samford in 10th and Elon in 17th overall.

Men's golf stumbles during Puerto Rico Classic second round
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -UNCG men's golf team fired a second round 306 on Monday at Rio Mar Country Club, and dropped one place in the standings with one round remaining.
The Spartans own a two-round score of 602 (296-306) and are currently 12th in the 15-team field. Alabama (555) continues to lead the field, followed by Purdue (568), Clemson (569), Virginia Tech (575), and Georgia (577) in the team top five.
Georgia Tech's James White (-8) owns a two-stroke lead in the race for individual medalist honors.
After an outstanding first round on Sunday, UNCG's Andy Knox struggled Monday on his way to a 78. Knox leads the Spartans at 148 overall, good for a tie for 37th.
Junior Robert Hoadley continued his steady play, carding his second straight 75 and moving into a tie for 45th at 150 (75-75). Will Almand shot 76 and is tied for 52nd at 151 (75-76), and Alex Ehlert is tied for 63rd at 155 (78-77). Colin Chapman was forced to withdraw from the second round.
The third and final round is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
