Georgia Southern, Wolfes lead ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Scott Wolfes shot a 66, and the Georgia Southern golf team combined for a 2-over-par 290 to lead the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational after the first round Sunday afternoon at Kilmaric Golf Club.

Wolfes’ round was his lowest as an Eagle and is the 15th time a Georgia Southern player has fired a 66. The sophomore leads the tournament by three strokes.

Georgia Southern is five strokes ahead of tournament host Old Dominion and Richmond and eight strokes ahead of fourth-place Virginia Commonwealth.

Charlie Martin shot a 73 to tie for 13th, and Matt Mierzejewski is tied for 25th after shooting a 75. Hayden Anderson shot a 76 and Will Evans carded a 79.

Wolfes birdied seven holes, including five on the back nine, and bogeyed one hole, the par-4 fifth. The sophomore shot a 31 on the back nine.

Mierzejewski shot a 33 on the back nine after posting four straight birdies on holes 11 through 14.  Martin had four birdies on the back nine and finished strong, posting birdies on the last three holes.

The Eagles continue the tournament Monday.

 

Elon tied for fifth at ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Junior Stuart Kaufman matched his career-low round by shooting a 69 on day one of the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate tournament on Sunday.  His performance helped the Elon squad, which posted a 299, to a three-way tie for fifth after one round.

Kaufman's 69 has him tied for second individually.  He trails Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes by three strokes with two rounds to play.  Kaufman previously shot a 69 at both the Hummingbird Intercollegiate and the Furman Intercollegiate last season.

Jack Adkins will begin Monday's second round in a tie for 23rd among the 94 golfers in the field after he carded a 74 on Sunday.

Two strokes back with a 76 is John Somers, who ended the day in a tie for 32nd.  He is trailed by Matthew Brady (T-64th, 80) and Will DiIanni (T-81st, 83).

Georgia Southern leads the 18-team field with a 2-over 290 after the first day.  Host Old Dominion and Richmond are tied for second with a 295 while VCU's 298 has it fourth.

The Phoenix is even at 299 with both Radford and George Mason.  The trio leads eighth-place Delaware (303) by four strokes after the first day.

Round two will be played at the Kilmaric Golf Club on Monday.

 

Appalachian State fourth at Mission Inn Intercollegiate, Nichols tied for first

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Appalachian State’s men's golf team finished fourth overall at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate.

Josh Nichols led the way for the Mountaineers, finishing tied for fifth overall after leading after day two. Nichols carded a 73-73-76=222 (+6), while Casey Komline finished second for App State and tied for 17th overall, shooting a 77-75-76=228 (+12).

Drew Harris and Jay Brown tied for 25th overall with Harris shooting a 78-83-70=231 (+15) and Brown carding a 76-79-76=231 (+15) through three rounds.

Daniel Walsh rounded out the scoring for the Apps as he finished one stroke behind Harris and Brown with a 79-77-76=232 (+16), finishing tied for 30th overall.

Appalachian turned in its fourth-place finish as it carded a 304-304-298=906 (+42) and Johnson & Wales (Fla.) took home the first-place finish, shooting a 299-299-286=884 (+20). Bethune-Cookman finished second with a 301-304-294=899 (+35) and St. John's finished third, five strokes behind Bethune-Cookman.

Appalachian State will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 3, when it travels to Cashiers, N.C., for the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at Country Club of Sapphire. The tournament will be a two-day event.
