Western Carolina finishes fourth, Poston runner-up at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – Western Carolina sophomore J.T. Poston shot an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes to finish a career-best second at the par-72, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Club.

Poston was 2-under through 13 holes on Saturday before back-to-back bogeys on the par-3 14th and par-5 15th to move back to even par. He closed the tournament with three straight pars to record 72 and tie for second.

Senior Steven Smith carded his career-low round on Saturday, shooting a team-low 3-under par 69 to finish tied for 20th. Tyler Lail was very consistent over three rounds, scoring a 74, 74 and finishing with a final-round 73 to card a 221. Lail placed just behind Smith, tying for 24th.

Kyle Wilson (T-46) and Jack Walsh (T-62) finished with a 4-over par and an 8-over par, respectively.

North Carolina’s Brandon Dalinka scorched the course with a 6-under par 66 on Saturday to advance five spots to win individual medalist honors by four strokes.

As a team, WCU tied with host school NC State to finish fourth, finishing +15. The Tar Heels of North Carolina won the tournament, shooting 10-under par.

Western Carolina now turns all of its attention to the 2012 Hummingbird Intercollegiate it will host at the beautiful Country Club of Sapphire Valley on Nov. 2-4. It is the sixth-consecutive season – and the seventh time overall – that Western Carolina and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley will host the collegiate tournament. Practice rounds are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, with the two-round, 36-hole event slated for Nov. 3-4 with teams playing 18 holes both days.

 

UNCG finishes 11^th at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished in 11th place overall after 54 holes of stroke play at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by NC State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Spartans posted a three-round score of 904 (299-304-305), while No. 37 North Carolina picked up the title with a team score of 854 (287-291-276).

North Carolina’s Brandon Dalinka took home the individual title with a 6-under par 210 (73-71-66) to win the event by four strokes.

Senior Robert Hoadley was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing in a tie for 42nd overall with a 9-over par 225 (75-78-72). Hoadley posted UNCG’s top final-round score Saturday afternoon, shooting an even-par 72.

Sophomore Roy Dixon and freshman Taylor Coalson each earned a 46^th-place finish. Dixon fired a 10-over par 226 (74-79-73), while Coalson carded a 10-over par 226 (71-76-79).

Freshman Luke Haithcock turned in a score of 231 (79-74-78) to place tied for 58th. Freshman Will Brown made his collegiate debut at the tournament as one of the Spartans’ two individuals. Brown turned in a score of 236 (80-75-81), including a 3-over par 75 in his second round of play.

The Spartans return to action Oct. 27-28 as they host their annual fall tournament, the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, held at Grandover Resort. The 54-hole tournament begins Saturday with a two-round, 36-hole day before concluding with 18 holes Sunday.

 

Appalachian State fourth at Mission Inn Intercollegiate, Nichols tied for first

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Appalachian State’s men's golf team finished day two of the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate tournament in fourth place, moving up three from its seventh-place position after day one.

Josh Nichols, who was tied for fourth after day one, is currently tied for first with Stetson's Dustin Dingus after shooting a 73-73=146 (+2) through two rounds of play for the Mountaineers. Casey Komline carded a 75 in round two, putting him tied for 14th overall with a 77-75=152 (+8).

Jay Brown is tied for 26^th, dropping three spots after shooting a 79 in round two for a 76-79=155 (+11). Daniel Walsh moved up five spots with a 79-77=156 (+12), placing him in a tie for 32nd.

Drew Harris rounded out the scoring for the Mountaineers, shooting an 83 and carding a 78-83=161 (+17) through two rounds of play.

Appalachian is in fourth place overall after day two of the tournament with a 304-304=608 (+32), while Johnson and Wales leads the way, carding a 299-299=598 (+22). Bethune-Cookman is in second, just seven strokes behind. St John's finished day two in third place, just one shot ahead of App State with a 298-309=607 (+31).

Appalachian State will be back in action on Sunday when they conclude play in the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers are set to tee off at 9 a.m.
