Davidson Golf's Skeadas Runner-Up at Mason Rudolph Championship
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Davidson junior John Skeadas placed second, two strokes off the lead at the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. As a team, the Wildcats placed sixth at 858, six-over-par.
Skeadas (71+66+70=207, -6) entered the day tied for first with Mississippi's Joe David and Akron's Charlie Bull at five-under-par, but Hunter Green of Middle Tennessee State fired a four-under 67 to finish at 205, eight-under-par.
Skeadas' one-under 70 led the ‘Cats in the third and final round on the par-71, 7,100-yard course. Sophomores Richard Fountain (69+75+72) and Sam Echikson (73+70+73) placed in a tie for 22nd at 216, three-over-par. Freshman Todd Eckstein and senior Jackson Taylor both finished strong, firing one-over 72's to place 39th (220) and 47th (223), respectively.
Davidson placed two strokes outside the top five behind Memphis (856, +4). Middle Tennessee State (844, -8) won by one stroke over Mississippi (845, -7). Defending Southern Conference champion Georgia Southern placed third at 848, three-under-par and was followed by Oklahoma at 851, one-under-par.
Southern Conference member College of Charleston (859, +7) trailed Davidson in seventh, as did host Vanderbilt (865, +13) in eighth. SoCon members Samford (873) and Western Carolina placed 10th and 12th, respectively.
Davidson will next compete at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate Oct. 3-4.
Cougars Finish Seventh in Mason Rudolph Championship
FRANKLIN, TENN. - The College of Charleston men's golf team wrapped up play in the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday as they fired a one-over 285 team score to finish seventh at the Legends Club of Tennessee.
Led by senior Henry Smart, the Cougars shot a combined score of 859 (+7). Smart shot another round in the red as he equaled his second round 69 with another 69 in the final round and finished at even-par for the tournament and tied for 14th individually.
Middle Tennessee St. captured the team title with a combined 844 (-8) and had the top individual, Hunter Green who shot an eight-under 205.
Sophomore John Duke Hudson was not far behind Smart as he fired an even-par 71 on the day to finish at one-over for the tournament and tied for 17th.
CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said there were some positives to take from the competition.
"It was a good tournament," he said. "I am happy with the scores. We will continue to work on course management and short game. I was glad to see Henry (Smart) shoot in the red again."
The Cougars are back in action Oct. 7-9 for the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga.
Golf Places Third at Rudolph Mason Championships
Gruber and Wolfes finish in top six to lead Eagles
Franklin, Tenn. - The Georgia Southern Golf team was the only squad among the 14 participants to shoot even par or better in every round, but it was not enough to hold off a hard-charging Middle Tennessee State team at the 2011 Rudolph Mason Championships. The Eagles finished at 4-under par (848) to finish four strokes behind first place MTSU (844) and three strokes behind second place Mississippi (845) at the par-71, 7,100 yard South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Eagles held a slim one stroke lead after entering the clubhouse at even par on Friday and then rallied late Saturday to finish at 1-under par following a slow start to the round. Georgia Southern entered Sunday three shots back in fourth place.
The Eagles put together a third consecutive solid round on the final day to finish 3-under for the round and 4-under for the weekend, but Middle Tennessee State was able to hold on late to secure the title. The Blue Raider's Hunter Green finished at 8-under par to win individual honors.
Senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) shot 4-under par for the weekend (70+71+68=209) to place fifth among individuals while freshman Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) finished one stroke back and tied for sixth (69+71+70=210). Sophomore Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot the low round of the weekend for the Eagles on Saturday when he carded a 4-under 67.
Anderson finished in a tie for 17th (75-67-72=214), while freshman Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) finished one stroke back in 21st place (70+74+71=215).
"I'm really proud of our team's effort this weekend," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "Having four guys finish in the top 21 including two in the top six shows how well we played. I really like the positive energy we have going and I look forward to taking it with us next weekend to Durham."
The fall schedule will continue for the Eagles on Saturday, October 1 when they travel to Durham, N.C. for the Rod Myers Invitational. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,036 yard course located at the Duke University Golf Club.
Jaeger, Mocs Lead after 18 Holes at Golfweek Conference Challenge
Stephan Jaeger's card was without a blemish posting five birdies and 13 pars in firing a season-best 67 (-5)
BURLINGTON, Iowa --- Senior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) carded a five-under par 67 to lead the Chattanooga Mocs to the first round lead at the Golfweek Conference Challenge Sunday on Spirit Hollow Golf Course. With 36 holes to play, Chattanooga holds a one-stroke lead over Arkansas after today's 279 (-9).
Jaeger's day was perfect with five birdies and 13 pars as his round did not have a single blemish. He also carries a one-shot lead into round two over a quartet of golfers at 68.
He is not alone in the top 10. Sophomore Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) is tied for sixth after a three-under par 69. He almost matched Jaeger's spotless round with four birdies, 13 pars and a lone bogey.
One shot back in a tie for eighth is junior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) at two under, 70. Like Robb, he missed a bogey-less round by one hole with three birdies, 14 pars and one bogey.
The Mocs got off to a great start playing the first three holes at four-under par making the turn at five-under with all five golfer at even par or better. Jaeger and Robb pushed the team lower four birdies in his first five holes on the back nine for Jaeger, while Robb posted two in his first four.
Chattanooga was 10 under through 15 holes before coming through the final three holes solidly with nine pars and one birdie against two bogeys on its counting cards. The nine-under par total of 279 leads the Razorbacks by one. The Mocs are four clear of a third-place tie between defending champ Iowa and perennial national championship contender Oklahoma State at four under, 283. Cal is fifth at level par, 288.
Freshman Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) rounded out the scoring with a 73 (+1) in his first career start. Sophomore Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) had the drop score with a 75 (+3).
Weilguni leads the Mocs off of No. 1 Monday at 11:30 a.m., EDT. He's followed by Johnston (11:39), Fox (11:48), Robb (11:57) and Jaeger (12:06). UTC is paired with Arkansas and Iowa.
Men's Golf Advances Two Spots in Final Standings at Mason Rudolph
Sophomore Jack Walsh leads WCU with 34th-place finish
Franklin, Tenn. - Western Carolina carded a season-best 289 as a team on Sunday to rally two positions in the final standings Sunday, placing in a two-way tie for 12th at the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt at the par-71, 7,100-yard Legend's Club.
Sophomore Jack Walsh led the five Catamount golfers, posting a team-best, one-under par 70 on Sunday to advance into a tie for 34th in the final standings with a three-day total of 219. True freshman J.T. Poston carded his best round of the 54-hole event over the final round, shooting 224 to place in a tie for 51st while sophomore Greg Bunner was one-stroke in arrears in a tie for 55th at 225. A Gastonia, N.C., product, Bunner averaged three-under on the par-5 holes for the tournament.
Rounding out WCU's side were freshmen Charlie Kilzer and Matthew Turner, both playing in their first collegiate event. Kilzer, a native of Charlotte, finished in a tie for 72nd overall after posting his best round of 75 over the final 18 holes to shoot 231. Turner, a high school teammate of Catamount teammates Poston and Trey White, shot a one-over 72 - WCU's second-best round of the final day - to place in a tie for 75th at 233 for the three-day tournament.
Middle Tennessee rallied from its second-place standing after 36 holes to win the three-round event over second-place Mississippi by a single stroke, 844-to-845. Southern Conference-foe - and first-round leader - Georgia Southern finished third, four strokes off the pace at 848, with Oklahoma (851) and Memphis (856) rounding out the top five team standings.
Other notables included SoCon schools Davidson (6th, 858), College of Charleston (7th, 859) and Samford (10th, 873).
Middle Tennessee's Hunter Green moved three spots in the final individual standings to take home individual medalist honors by two strokes over Davidson's John Skeadas, 205-to-207.
Western Carolina returns to action next weekend at the North Carolina State Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event is scheduled for Oct. 3-4 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF EARNS 10TH-PLACE FINISH AT 2011 MASON RUDOLPH CHAMPIONSHIP

FRANKLIN, Tenn. --- In its toughest competition of the 2011 fall season, the Samford University men's golf team finished 10th at the talent-laden Mason Rudolph Championship held at the highly-acclaimed Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course. The prestigious three-day event was hosted by Vanderbilt University.
The Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course was set up as a par-71, 7,100-yard challenge.
The field for the 2011 Mason Rudolph Men's Championship included Samford, Akron, Belmont, College of Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Western Carolina.
The Bulldogs finished in 10th place Sunday, four strokes ahead of South Carolina and only eight strokes behind eighth place and host school Vanderbilt. Samford closed out the 54-hole competition with a total team score of 873 (293-293-287).
Junior Casey O'Toole led the Bulldogs to their best round of the tournament Sunday. O'Toole fired a tournament-best score of 2-under-par 69 and paced Samford to an 18-hole tally of 287. O'Toole, the Bulldogs' native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the three-day competition with a score of even-par 213 (71-73-69) and placed 14th in the individual standings.
Samford's Drew Aimone finished 34th in the tournament and carded a 54-hole score of 219 (74-72-73). He was followed closely by teammates Gabe Hyde (75-74-74=223) and Bill Nabors (80-74-71=225). Sophomore William Catanzaro also tallied a solid three-round score as the Bulldogs' native of Gadsden, Ala., finished with a 227 (73-79-75).
Middle Tennessee's Hunter Green earned individual medalist honors Sunday as he led the Blue Raiders to the team title with a 54-hole mark of 844 (285-280-279). Middle Tennessee held on to defeat Ole Miss by a single stroke. The Rebels concluded the weekend with a 54-hole tally of 845 (290-275-280).
Individually, the Blue Raiders' Green defeated Davidson's John Skeadas by two strokes. Green fired a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to earn the championship title with a three-day mark of 8-under-par 205 (70-68-670.
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Oct. 3-4, as the Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in the highly-acclaimed Jerry Pate Intercollegiate which will be held at the Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.
