Davidson Golf's Skeadas Moves Atop Leader Board at Mason Rudolph Championship
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Davidson junior John Skeadas moved into a three-way tie for the individual lead after shooting a five-under-par 66 Saturday in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
As a team Davidson sits fifth at 572, four-over-par. Davidson sophomore Richard Fountain had been in a tie for the lead after the first round Friday, but shot a four-over 75 Saturday to slide into a tie for 20th place at 144,two-over-par.
Skeadas (71+66) is tied for first with Mississippi's Joe David (69+68) and Akron's Charlie Bull at 137, five-under-par.
Sophomore Sam Echikson also had a strong outing for the ‘Cats, firing a one-under 70 to move into a tie for 15th at 143, one-over-par. Freshman Todd Eckstein fired a two-over 73 to round out the ‘Cats scorers for the day.
Davidson is eight strokes behind Oklahoma, which leads Middle Tennessee State and Mississippi by one stroke at 564. Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern is three strokes behind Oklahoma and five ahead of Davidson at 567.
The Wildcats are pursued by Akron in sixth (573, +5) and SoCon member College of Charleston (574, +6) in seventh. Memphis (580), Vanderbilt (585) and SoCon member Samford (586) round out the Top 10.
Play continues on the par-71, 7,100-yard course Sunday with the third and final round.
Eagles Three Shots Back at Mason Rudolph Championships
Georgia Southern in fourth place heading into final round
Franklin, Tenn. - The Georgia Southern Golf team posted a 1-under par 283 on Saturday to move to 1-under par (567) for the tournament, trailing first place Oklahoma (564) by three strokes. Middle Tennessee State and Mississippi are tied for second at 3-under par (565) heading into the final round of play on Sunday.
Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the big mover on the day for the Eagles, shaving eight strokes off of his first round score with a 4-under 67. Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished their round at even-par and Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) shot +3 (74) to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
"We got off to a slow start today, but we were able to rally and give ourselves a chance heading into the final round," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We will need to post four solid scores tomorrow, but if we can do that than I like our chances."
The Mason Rudolph Championships is hosted by Vanderbilt University on the par-71, 7,100 yard South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Several premier programs make up this year's field including teams from the SEC and the Southern Conference.
Cougars in Seventh After Second Round
FRANKLIN, TENN. - Led by a two-under 69 from senior Henry Smart the Cougars shot a team score of 285 (+1) to finish the day in seventh-place after the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt.
The Cougars are six-over for the tournament, ten shots back of leader Oklahoma and just two shots out of fifth-place.
Junior John Duke Hudson is the Cougars top individual for the tournament after a two round score of 70-73=143 (+2) and is tied for 15th.
Smart (+2) is tied for 20th and junior Neil Gowan is not far behind as he is tied for 27th with a 145 (+3).
Senior Seth Stuart rebounded from an opening nine-over 80 to shoot even-par for his second round.
"I thought it was a very solid round," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "It was nice to get some red from Henry (Smart) and a nice comeback from Seth Stuart. We are putting up good numbers, just need to continue to give ourselves good looks and they will start dropping."
The Cougars will tee off from hole one at 8:30 ET tomorrow morning in the final round and are paired with Memphis and Vanderbilt. To follow all the action, stay tuned to golfstat.com.
