Broome Leads Furman to Spring Hill Suites Title

Matt Broome, Furman Sweep Springhill Suites Intercollegiate Titles

Florence, S.C. -- Senior Matt Broome (-8) shot a final round 71 to claim individual medalist honors and lead Furman to a team title on Tuesday in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.

The Barrington, R.I., native finished one shot ahead of Charleston Southern's David Denlinger (-7) and USC Aiken's Kyle Godsman (-7) to claim his second career tournament title and give the Paladins their second Springhill Suites Intercollegiate crown. The win marked the first for both Broome and the Furman team since the Paladins swept honors at the Big 5 Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., last October.

"This was a great start to the year for us," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield. "The guys played very well and I'm very proud of them."

Broome (68-69-71=208) played the Country Club of South Carolina's par fours at seven-under over 54 holes while notching 14 birdies over three rounds. Fellow senior Austin Reeves (E), who captured the Southern Conference title on the same course in 2010, claimed 18th place while Paladin freshman Josh Chay (+2) recorded a 25th place finish following a final round 72. Freshman Michael Borton and junior Johnny Kyger, who totaled a tournament-high three eagles on the week, tied for 28th place at three-over par.

The Paladins (-8) shot 288-283-285=856 to claim a four-shot victory over second place Samford (-4) and USC Aiken (-4). Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Radford, Francis Marion, Elon and Georgia Southern rounded out the top 10 in a 15-team field that included every SoCon school except Chattanooga and UNC Greensboro.

Broome and the Paladins will look to defend their Big 5 Invitational titles when they return to Philadelphia, Pa.,, October 8-9.

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF PLACES SECOND AT 2011 SPRING HILL SUITES INTERCOLLEGIATE
--- Nabors finishes the two-day competition tied for eighth place in the individual standings ---

FLORENCE, S.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team opened its 2011-12 season in impressive fashion Tuesday as the Bulldogs earned a second-place finish at the highly-competitive, 15-team Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina.

Samford finished the 54-hole tournament with a total team score of 860 (285-288-287). The Bulldogs' Bill Nabors, a junior native of Decatur, Ala., tallied an eighth-place finish Tuesday as he carded a three-round mark of 2-under-par 214 (70-69-75).

Fellow-juniors Gabe Hyde, Casey O'Toole and Drew Aimone also registered impressive scores of 215 (71-74-70), 216 (71-74-71) and 220 (73-76-71), respectively. Samford's Hyde, who finished just one stroke behind Nabors, earned a 12th place finish, while O'Toole and Aimone came in at No. 18 and No. 32 in the individual standings.

The Bulldogs' true freshman Zac Hughes carded an impressive score at the 2011 Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in his opening tournament as a college athlete. Hughes, a native of Mobile, Ala., tallied a 54-hole score of 222 (75-71-76).

Furman University carded a third-round score of 285 on Tuesday to win the championship title of the two-day event. The Paladins turned in a final team total of 856 (288-283-285) to place just four strokes ahead of Samford.

Rounding out the top five teams in the competition were South Carolina-Aiken (288-288-284=860), Gardner-Webb University (296-288-279=863) and Charleston Southern (286-291-288=865).

Winning individual medalist honors Tuesday was Furman's Matthew Broome. Broome fired a 1-under-par 71 in the final round of competition to hold on for the championship title. He finished the 54-hole course with a total mark of 8-under-par 208.

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Sept. 23-25 at the 2011 Mason Rudolph Championship which will be held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

 

Cougars Finish Sixth at Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate

FLORENCE, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's golf team shot a 3-over 291 to finish in sixth place at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate, held at the Country Club of South Carolina.

Junior Neil Gowan and senior Seth Stuart led the team for the tournament. Gowan shot rounds of 71, 68, 76 for a combined 215 (-1) and finished tied for 12th place. Stuart shot his best round of the tournament on the final day, a 1-under 71 and also tied for 12th.

Furman's Matthew Broome shot 8-under to win medalist and lead Furman to the team victory as well.

The Cougars are back in action Sept. 23-25 at the Mason Randolph Invitational at the Legends Club of Tennessee in Franklin, Tenn.

Somers, Elon Tie for Eighth at Springhill Suites Intercollegiate

FLORENCE, S.C. -- John Somers fired a final round 73 on his way to a three-round mark of 214 (70-71-73) to finish in a tie for eighth individually at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Somers' performance helped the Elon Phoenix men's golf team to place in a tie for eighth in its first tournament of the year with a score of 871.

Somers' score was the second-best of any Southern Conference performer in the event. He was bested by only Furman's Matthew Broome (68-69-71--208) who won the individual crown in the field of 80.

Tanner Norton bounced back from a rough first two rounds by putting up a 68 on Tuesday. Norton finished in a tie for 32nd with a three-round total of 220 (78-74-68). One stroke back was Dylan Morgan who earned his 221 and tie for 37th with rounds of 74-75-72.

Matthew Brady's score of 222 (73-75-74) had him in a tie for 44th while Blaze DiPasquale shot a 227 (72-75-80) to finish in a tie for 68th. It was the first collegiate event for both Brady and DiPasquale.

Elon's 287 on Tuesday was its best round of the three played over two days. The Phoenix carded rounds of 289 and 295 on Monday.

SoCon rival Furman put up an 856 (288-283-285) to claim the team crown. The Paladins finished four strokes ahead of fellow SoCon member Samford (285-288-287--860) and USC Aiken (288-288-284--860). Gardner-Webb (296-288-279--863) and Charleston Southern (286-291-288--865) rounded out the top five squads.

Elon was tied for eighth with host Francis Marion (289-290-292--871).

Other league members in the 15-team field included College of Charleston (sixth; 287-288-291--866), Georgia Southern (10th; 300-282-291--873), Appalachian State (13th; 297-293-297--887) and Western Carolina (14th; 291-300-302--893).

Elon will break until Oct. 3 when it begins play in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C. That tournament spans two days.

 

WCU Men's Golf Finishes 14th at 2011-12 Season-Opener
Freshman J.T. Poston leads squad with eight-place finish

Florence, S.C. - True freshman J.T. Poston posted his third-consecutive round of even-par or better on Tuesday to open his collegiate career, leading Western Carolina with an eighth-place finish as the squad shot 302 over the final round to finish 14th overall at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.

Poston shot even-par 72 over the final 18 holes to score his first career top-10 individual finish in his first-ever event for the Catamounts. The Hickory, N.C., native carded 40 par scores over the 54-hole event, tied for the second-most among the 80-golfer field, while also ranking among the leaders in par-3 scoring (2.92, -1).

Paced by individual tournament champion Matthew Broome - who finished with a one-stroke lead over the second-place tie between Charleston Southern's David Denlinger and South Carolina-Aiken's Kyle Godsman - Furman claimed the tournament's team championship.

The Paladins edged fellow Southern Conference member, Samford, and USCA by four strokes apiece in the final team standings. Gardner-Web rallied to finish fourth just ahead of fifth-place Charleston Southern. Other SoCon finishers included College of Charleston (6th, 866), Elon (t-8th, 871), Georgia Southern (10th, 873) and Appalachian State (13th, 887).

Sophomore Jack Walsh finished in a tie for 50th for the Catamounts, carding a three-over 75 on his final round to shoot 223 (72-76-75). Classmate Greg Bunner shot 77 on Tuesday, finishing at 226 for the three-round event, with Trey White (t-75th)

WCU's final scorer, sophomore Collin Witiak, withdrew from competition during Tuesday's final 18 holes, finishing with opening round scores of 76 and 81.

Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks at the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt's par-71 Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn., looking to build upon last season's 15th-place finish.

 

ASU Men's Golf Wraps Up Season Opener

FLORENCE, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf carded a consistent 297-293-297=887 (+23) to place 13th at the season-opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate.

The Mountaineers were led by Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian), who placed 18th with a 70-71-75=216 (E). The junior knocked in 13 birdies over 54 holes and ranked second in the event with a cumulative two-under on the course's par-threes.

Daniel Walsh (Wilkesboro, N.C./West Wilkes) and newcomer Jason Woodall (Yanceyville, N.C./The Elon School) tied for 53rd at 224 (+8). Walsh posted a 73-74-77 while the freshman from Yanceyville, N.C. finished with a 78-75-71.

Casey Komline (Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) posted a 76-73-78=227 (+11) in 68th place and Dustin Hudson (Hildebran, N.C./East Burke) carded 78-78-74=230 (+14) to place 71st.

Furman took home the team title with an 856 (-8), two strokes ahead of second-place finishers Samford and USC Aiken. FU's Matthew Broome earned the tournament medal by one stroke at 208 (-8).

Also competing from the Southern Conference, College of Charleston placed sixth with an 866 (+2), Elon tied host Francis Marion for eighth place at 871 (+7), Georgia Southern finished 10th at 878 (+14) and Western Carolina wrapped up the event six strokes behind the Mountaineers in 14th place.

The Apps return to competition on Oct. 3-4 at the Telich Sun Life Financial Cleveland State Invitational in Beechwood, Ohio.

 

Eagles Finish Tenth at SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate

Florence, S.C. - After shooting a combined 6-under par in round two to move into a tie for 7th place, the Georgia Southern Golf team shot +3 in the final round of play on Monday to finish at 873 (+9), earning a tenth place finish at the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina. Furman University finished at 856 (-8) to take home first place honors, led by senior Matt Broome who carded a 208 (-8) to lead in the individual standings.

Freshmen Scott Wolfes and Charlie Martin led the way for the Eagles, both posting a 1-under 215 in their first collegiate competition to finish in a tie for 12th place. Senior Lewis Gruber shot 3-under 69 in round 2 for the lowest round by an Eagle and finished in a tie for 50th place (78-69-76=223).

The Eagles found themselves in 13th place after shooting 300 (+12) in round one, but improved their overall score by eighteen strokes in the second round, shooting 282 (-6) to jump into a tie for 7th place. Georgia Southern tried to carry their momentum into Monday, but dropped eight strokes in the final three holes to come in at 291 (+3) for the round and a final score of 856 (-8) at the par-72, 7,062 yard course.

The Eagles will have some time to prepare before hitting the links September 23-25 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tennessee.
