Broome Propels Furman Into Lead At Springhill Suites Intercollegiate
Florence, S.C. -- Senior Matt Broome (-7) fired rounds of 68 and 69 to grab first place and help Furman (288-283=571) into the lead after two rounds in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina.
The Barrington, R.I., native held third after a four-under 68 in the morning round, but jumped to a one-stroke lead over USC Aiken's Kyle Godsman (-6) and Charleston Southern's David Denlinger (-6) on the strength of a three-under 69 second round on Monday afternoon. Fellow senior Austin Reeves (+1), who redshirted last season after claiming the Southern Conference title in 2010, shot 74-71=145 to hold a share of 21st while Paladin freshmen Michael Borton (+2) and Josh Chay (+2) are tied for 27th after each carded identical scores of 73 in both rounds.
The Paladins (-5) leads second place Samford (-3) by two strokes with the College of Charleston four strokes off of the lead in third place. USC Aiken, Charleston Southern and host Francis Marion round out the top six in the 15-team field.
Final round play in the 54-hole, season-opening tournament is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF SHINES ON OPENING DAY OF SPRING HILL SUITES INTERCOLLEGIATE

FLORENCE, S.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team fired a two-round score of 573 (285-288) on Monday to open the 2011 Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in second place at the Country Club of South Carolina. The Bulldogs finished with three players shooting under par in the opening round of competition, while junior Bill Nabors rounded out the day tied for fourth place at 139 (70-69).
Samford's Nabors, Gabe Hyde and Casey O'Toole all posted below-par numbers on the first 18 holes of the day. Nabors, the Bulldogs' native of Decatur, Ala., turned in an opening round of 70, while both Hyde and O'Toole carded identical scores of 70.
Heading into Tuesday's final round of competition, Samford trails first-place Furman by only two strokes. Furman concluded the opening 36 holes of play with a team score of 571 (288-283). Rounding out the top five teams in the competition are College of Charleston (287-288=575), South Carolina-Aiken (288-288=576) and Charleston Southern (286-291=577).
Samford led Monday's 15-team tournament by a stroke following the first 18 holes of play. The Bulldogs fired a competition-best 285 in the morning session, while Charleston Southern followed closely at 286. Current-leader Furman tallied a 288 in the opening round of action.
Nabors paced Samford Monday by carding a team-best total of 5-under-par 139 (70-69). He was followed by fellow juniors Hyde and O'Toole, who each concluded the first 36 holes of play with identical scores of 145 (71-74).
In his first round as a collegiate athlete, Bulldogs' true freshman Zac Hughes turned in a two-round mark of 146 (75-71), while junior Drew Aimone finished Monday at 149 (73-76).
Furman's Matthew Broome currently leads the individual standings with a 36-hole mark of 7-under-par 137 (68-69).
The final 18 holes of the 2011 Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate will be contested Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CDT). The 54-hole, 15-team event is being played on the 7,062-yard, par 72 Country Club of South Carolina course.
Cougars in Third Place at Francis Marion Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's golf team shot a combined 1-under through 36 holes and is just four shots back of the lead after two rounds in the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate.
Junior Neil Gowan led the effort as he shot 71-68=139 (-5) and is tied for fourth-place among the individual leaders.
Senior Seth Stuart is currently in the top 15 and he is tied for 15th place after a 70=74=144 (E). Senior Henry Smart is just one shot back after rounds of 73 and 72. Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars was sophomore Alex Ellis, who shot 73-74=147 (+3).
CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said he was pleased for the most part with how his team came out in the first tournament of the season.
"I thought we played well out there today," he said. "I think there is certainly room for improvement and we have to go into tomorrow focused on getting the job done."

Nichols Paces Men's Golf in Florence
FLORENCE, S.C. - Junior Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian) strung together solid rounds of 70 and 71 on Monday at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational to lead Appalachian State University men's golf. The Mountaineers carded a 297-293=590 (+14) to stand 13th at the event, while Nichols is tied for sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Kernersville, N.C. native knocked in nine birdies on the day, including a tournament-best two on par-threes.
Daniel Walsh (Wilkesboro, N.C./West Wilkes) finished the day six strokes behind Nichols at 73-74=147 (+3) for 31st place, while sophomore Casey Komline (Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) shaved three strokes off his first-round tally with a 76-73=149 (+5) in 44th place.
Newcomer Jason Woodall (Yanceyville, N.C./The Elon School) fired a 78-75=153 (+11) for 67th place and Dustin Hudson (Hildebran, N.C./East Burke) placed 75th with a pair of 78s on the day 156 (+12).
Furman leads the field of 15 teams with a 36-hole tally of 571 (-5), two strokes ahead of Samford. Also from the Southern Conference, College of Charleston stands in third place at 575 (-1), Georgia Southern is seventh at 582 (+6), Elon ranks ninth at 584 (+8) and Western Carolina is one stroke behind the Apps in 14th place.

Elon Men Tied For Ninth in Opening Golf Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C. -- With two rounds of play in the books in its season-opening tournament, the Elon men's golf team finds itself in a tie for ninth at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion. The Phoenix posted a mark of 584 (289-295) in its two Monday rounds.
John Somers led Elon with two sub-par rounds. The sophomore fired a two-under 70 in his first round before putting up a 71 on his final 18 holes. His 141 has him in a tie for sixth out of the 80 golfers in the field.
In a tie for 31st is Blaze DiPasquale who shot a 147 (72-75) in his first collegiate tournament. Also playing in his first event at the collegiate level was Matthew Brady who fired a 148 (73-75) to sit in a tie for 39th following Monday's play.
Dylan Morgan will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 44th after shooting a 149 (74-75) on Monday. Rounding out the Phoenix's squad is Tanner Norton who posted rounds of 78 and 74. His 152 has him 66th.
The 15-team event is led by SoCon rival Furman (288-283--571) who sits at five-under after two rounds. The Paladins are followed by two more league teams in Samford (285-288--573) and College of Charleston (287-288-575). Elon is tied for ninth with Gardner-Webb, but is just two strokes out of seventh.
Three other SoCon programs are in the event. Georgia Southern (300-282--582) is tied for seventh, Appalachian State (297-293--590) is 13th and Western Carolina (291-300--591) is 14th.
The final round will be played at The Country Club of South Carolina on Tuesday.
WCU Men's Golf 15th After Two Rounds at Season-Opener
Final round set for Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 am
Florence, S.C. - Sitting ninth after the first round of the season-opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate, the Western Carolina men's golf team slipped into 14th after 36 holes on Monday with a team, two-round score of 591 at the 7,062-yard, par 72 Country Club of South Carolina course.
WCU enters Tuesday's final 18 holes just seven strokes out of 10th-place. Action gets underway at 8:30 am.
Led by tournament individual leader Matthew Broome (68-69=137), Southern Conference foe Furman posted a 571 on the opening day to lead two additional league schools in Samford (573) and the College of Charleston (575) in the team standings. USC-Aiken (576) stands fourth with Charleston Southern (577) rounding out the top five.
For the Catamounts, true freshman J.T. Poston stood tied for seventh after the opening 18 holes, carding a two-under 70 in his first collegiate round. He concluded his first day tied for ninth to pace the squad, following up with an even-par score of 72. All told, the Hickory, N.C., native carded 26 pars over his first two collegiate rounds.
Poston, who was one of five individuals to record an Eagle on Monday, enters the final round just five strokes off the lead.
Last year's leading scorer for WCU, sophomore Jack Walsh, slipped from a tie for 20th after shooting even-par 72 on his first 18 holes of the season into a tie for 39th after two rounds with a 76 on the second 18. He is followed by classmate Greg Bunner (73-76=149) in a tie for 44th, junior Trey White in a tie for 71st (79-76=155) and Collin Witiak (76-81=157) rounding out the Catamount scorers.
The final round of WCU's 2011-12 season-opener is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 13.
