Chapman opens U.S. Amateur play at even par
Erin, Wisc.-UNCG senior Colin Chapman fired an even par-70 in the opening round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championship, Monday at Erin Hills Golf & Country Club.
Chapman is currently tied for 61st with 34 other golfers after the first of two rounds of stroke play. The top 64 golfers will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday. Blake Biddle of St. Charles, Ill., leads at 5-under par.
Staring on the 10th tee, Chapman enjoyed a sensational back nine, making the turn at 4-under. He opened with a birdie on 10 and later added birdies on 15, 16 and 18.
But his final nine holes were a different story. Chapman bogeyed No. 1 and, after a par on the second hole, suffered bogeys on three and five and a double-bogey on No. 6. After paring seven and eight, Chapman closed his round with a birdie on No. 9 to get back to even.
Chapman advanced to the U.S. Amateur by finishing in a three-way tie for second and winning a playoff in sectional qualifying in Clemmons, N.C.
Chapman tees off in the second and final round of stroke play Tuesday at 7:40 a.m. local time.
Furman's Aloi, Broome Open Play At 2011 United States Men's Amateur
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman University senior Anthony Aloi fired a one-over 73 and senior Matt Broome carded a three-over 75 in opening round play at the 111th United States Men's Amateur Championship in Erin, Wis., on Monday.
Aloi, a native of Plainsboro, N.J., opened tournament play with a birdie on No. 10 at the Erin Hills Golf Club, but bogeyed three of the next seven holes to make the turn at two-over par. The New Jersey Public Links champion recorded eight pars on the front nine and notched a birdie at the 637-yard par five, No. 7 to finish in a tie for 95th place at one-over 73.
Broome, who also began play on the back nine at the Erin Hills course, made the turn at one-over par, but suffered bogeys at No. 5 and No. 6 to slip into a share of 167th place at three-over 75.
The Paladins duo will take to the course for round two on Tuesday with Broome set to tee-off at 8:50 a.m. and Aloi at 9 a.m. at the par-70 Blue Mound Golf and Country Club. Following stroke play on Tuesday, the 315-player field will be reduced to 64 for match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
