BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf will host the Donald Ross Invitational in October and will compete in four other tournaments this fall, head coach Bill Dicus announced on Thursday.
The Mountaineers open the 2011-12 campaign at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational in Florence, S.C. on September 11-13. Last season, ASU placed 13th at the event behind Drew Harris' (Lenoir, N.C./Hibriten) 13th-place finish at 222 (+6) over 54 holes. Former Mountaineer Casey Johnson won the tournament in 2009.
From there, the Apps head north to the Telich Sun Life Financial Cleveland State Invitational in Beachwood, Ohio. Dustin Hudson (Hildebran, N.C./East Burke) led Appalachian to 13th place at last year's event with a 153 (+11) 36-hole score, good for 37th place. This year's event is set for October 3-4.
ASU returns to home to host the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Oct. 16-18 in Morganton, NC. The 12-team event takes place at one of ASU's home courses, Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. Though the Apps have not hosted a local tournament in recent memory, the squad joins the ASU women's golf team each spring to compete for the University Cup at Mimosa Hills.
Appalachian closes out the month at Western Carolina's Hummingbird Intercollegiate at Cashiers, N.C.'s Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Dicus' squad placed 16th at the 2010 tournament behind Darren Cook's (Boone, N.C./Watauga) 143 (+1) 13th-place finish. The event is scheduled for Oct.31-November 1.
The fall season concludes in Florida at the Nov. 7-8 Stetson Invitational at DeLand's Victoria Hills Country Club. Though the Apps regularly compete in the Sunshine State, it is the team's first visit to Victoria Hills since Nov. 2006.
Appalachian returns its top five scorers from last season, as Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian) and Casey Komline (Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) join Cook, Harris and Hudson on the links this fall.
