AUSTIN, TEXAS - When sophomore Alex Ellis raised the P.W. Curry trophy he joined an elite group including Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw as he added his name to the list of winners in the 2011 Firecracker Open.
Ellis shot round of 68-66-66=200 (-13) for a three shot victory in the tournament, which has been played every year since 1946.
Also competing were College of Charleston seniors Seth Stuart and Ben Pounds. Stuart tied for eighth with a five-under 208 (68-68-72) and Pounds tied for 39th with a three-over 216 (73-69-74).
For Ellis he has been playing well this summer with a 67.7 stroke average combined in his last three tournaments.
CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire, who is a two-time winner of the Firecracker, said he was very proud of the way his golfers played.
"Alex had a phenomenal tournament and has had a terrific summer," he said. "I'm thrilled with the success our guys are having this summer and hope it will translate into our season."
