Greenville, S.C. -- Matt Broome, a rising senior on the Furman men's golf team, outlasted two other golfers in a playoff to capture the third and final qualifying spot for the 2011 United States Men's Amateur Championship in a 36-hole qualifier at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass., on Monday.
The Barrington, R.I. product carded an even-par 72 in round one before shooting a one-over 73 over the final 18 holes to forge a tie with Chad Stumpo (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Mike Calef (South Boston, Mass.). The 2008 New England Amateur champion survived the three-for-one playoff to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur, which will be held August 22-28, at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wisconsin.
Broome posted a 72.8 stroke average over 25 rounds for the Paladins this past season and tallied four top-10 finishes, including earning medalist honors at the Big 5 Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., last fall.
