Ringoes, N.J. -- Furman University's Anthony Aloi fired rounds of 70 and 72 to claim first at the Seventh Annual New Jersey Men's Public Links Championship on Thursday at Heron Glen Golf Course in Ringoes, N.J.
A rising senior, Aloi started each round on Thursday with a pair of birdies. In the morning, he birdied the par-4, No. 1 by sinking an eight-foot putt before getting up-and-down for a birdie at the par-5, No. 2.
In the afternoon, the Plainsboro, N.J., native recorded a birdie on the par-5, No. 10 after reaching the green in two. He followed with a birdie at the par-4, No. 11.
"It's great to get off to a nice start," said Aloi, who tied for ninth at last week's New Jersey Open, "because you don't have to grind your way back."
Aloi (70-72-142), who claimed the New Jersey Metropolitan Golf Association's Public Links title two weeks ago, finished two strokes ahead of second place Jacob Stockl (69-75=144).
