Cook Finishes Strong for ASU Men's Golf
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf finished strong in the spring opener with a 298 final round score at the Barefoot at the Beach Challenge on Tuesday. The Mountaineers placed eighth at the tournament with a three-day total of 310-295-298=903 (+39).
Junior Darren Cook carded a third round 69 to add to finish in 16th place at 77-72-69=218 (+2). Tuesday's score was the lowest of his career by two strokes.
Josh Nichols and Casey Komline each fired a 74 on Tuesday to remain tied and finish in 29th place. Nichols finished with a 76-72-74=222 (+6), while Komline shot a 74 in each of the three rounds.
Drew Harris finished just two strokes back with a 76-72-76=224 (+8) for 35th place, while Daniel Walsh was close behind in 44th place at 70-76-81=227 (+11) at The Surf Gold and Beach Club.
Senior Dustin Hudson tied for 50th at 79-74-78=231 (+15) and Jay Brown followed with a 79-77-77=233 (+17) in 54th place.
Colin Hobbs placed 68th with a 78-83-78=239 (+23) and Web Grubb rounded out the Apps in 70th place with a three-day total of 88-80-81=249 (+36).
Kennesaw State won the team title with a 284-281-280=845 (-19), six strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb. KSU's Matt Nagy maintained his lead throughout the three rounds to earn the individual title at 67-68-68=203 (-13), four strokes ahead of second place.
The Mountaineers continue their southeastern swing on Friday at the Mission Inn Spring Invitational at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla., near Orlando. ASU placed fifth at the event a year ago.
Terriers Open Spring with 8th Place Finish at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
AIKEN, S.C. -- The Wofford College men's golf team finished their opening spring tournament in 8th place with a 883 on the par-70 6,617 yard Palmetto Golf Club in the two-day three-round 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
The Terriers (292, 290 and 301) finished 34 strokes behind tournament winner Alabama (849). Wofford did finish ahead of SoCon opponents Georgia Southern (893), Furman (900) and the College of Charleston (900).
Wofford was led by Chandler Brazeal, who fired a three round score of 214 with scores of 70 and 70 in day one and 74 in the final round. Brazeal finished tied for 11th, 15 strokes behind tournament winner Bud Cauley, who shot a 201 (66, 66 and 69) from Alabama. Cauley's 201 was a new tournament record.
Zach Capps followed with with a 76, 72 and a 76 for a 224, while Charles Moore shot a 70, 76 and 76 for a 224 for the Terriers. Mark Joye added a 76 in round one and a 73 in round three towards the Terriers overall score. He also shot a 77 in round two to finish with a 226. Brent Whitehead contributed with his second round score of 74. He shot a 79 in round one and a 78 in round two for a 231 final.
Wofford participate in the Furman Intercollegiate on March 18 through March 20 for their next tournament.
SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF: ‘DOGS EARN SEVENTH-PLACE FINISH AT RAIN-SHORTENED SAMFORD INVITE

ONEONTA, Ala. --- In the rain-shortened 2011 Samford Invitational held this week at the Limestone Springs Golf Club, the Samford University men's golf team tallied a seventh-place finish at the 18-team competition. The Bulldogs carded a second-round total of 293 on Tuesday to jump seven positions into seventh place.
The second round of play in the Samford Invitational was completed early Tuesday morning before the 18-team field began the third-and-final round of competition. The teams were approximately 13 holes through the final 18 holes of play when a massive lightning storm caused the stoppage of play. Therefore, the third round was canceled and only the first two rounds of competition were counted.
Samford, the host school of the two-day event, earned a seventh-place finish with a total team score of 599 (306-293). After a slow start to the tournament Monday, the Bulldogs improved 13 strokes in the second round and jumped seven positions en route to their final seventh-place finish.
Sophomore Gabe Hyde posted Samford's best score Tuesday with a second-round mark of 71. The Bulldogs' native of Hoover finished the tournament with a 36-hole total of 150, which was good enough for a tie for 32nd place along with teammate Casey O'Toole.
O'Toole, Samford's sophomore native of Oneonta, carded a second-round score of 77 on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a total mark of 150.
The Bulldogs were led in the tournament by senior Martin Bunt. Bunt, a native of Pensacola, Fla., turned in a score of 72 Tuesday to go along with his 3-over-par mark of 75 on Monday for a team-best total of 147. Bunt's finish was good enough to finish tied for 13th place in the individual standings.
Rounding out the scoring for Samford were sophomores Bill Nabors and Drew Aimone. Nabors tallied a two-day total of 153 (79-74), while Aimone finished with a 36-hole mark of 155 (79-76).
Central Arkansas cruised to the team championship of the 2011 Samford Invitational with a two-round score of 562 (274-288). After a sizzling first-round score of 274, the Bears held on for a 26-stroke victory over second-place Illinois State. Illinois State earned its second-place finish with a two-day score of 588 (295-293).
Winthrop finished third at the 2011 Samford Invitational with a 36-hole mark of 591 (299-292).
Individually, Central Arkansas' Steven Lecuyer and Alabama's Hunter Slatton tied for the championship title of the event. Both players posted identical scores of 8-under-par 136.
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 19-20 as the Bulldogs continue play in their spring season at the 2011 Furman Intercollegiate to be held at the Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
Weilguni Leads Mocs to Tie for 4th at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
Redshirt freshman Benni Weilguni finishes fourth with even-par total of 210
AIKEN, S.C.---Chattanooga redshirt freshman Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) posted his best career finish winding up fourth at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Weilguni's 70 (E) today gave him a 54-hole total of 210, even par.
"Really proud of Benni and how he played this week," said head coach Mark Guhne. "He put together three strong rounds and is off to a great start to the Spring."
Weilguni's play led the Mocs to a tie for fourth overall with East Carolina at 866. Today's 292 was the fourth-best team total for the final round.
No. 2 Alabama won the event at nine-over par 849. No. 17 Virginia was second at 860, while Liberty ended up third with a total of 862.
Chattanooga claimed wins over Clemson (2 shots) and Vanderbilt (11), along with SoCon rivals Wofford (17), Georgia Southern (27), Furman (34), College of Charleston (34) and Elon (35).
Bud Cauley of Alabama was the individual medalist with a tourney-record 201 (-9). ECU's Harold Varner was second at minus four, 206, followed by Adam Hoffman (Vandy) at one under, 209.
Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) ended his 54 holes tied for 21st at 219 with rounds of 70, 75 and 74. Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) was tied for 24th at 220.
Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) had a strong bounce-back round today with a one-over par 71. That moved him 29 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd at 222. Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) rounded out the Mocs lineup at tied for 38th one shot behind Robb at 223.
"I like the way Chris came back today," added Guhne. "He gave us what we needed.
"Overall, it was a decent start," Guhne concluded. "We had one great round and another strong one. I'm looking forward to seeing it continue to come together."
Next up for Chattanooga is the Furman Intercollegiate next week, March 18-20. Fox is the defending co-medalist of the event. Live scoring will be available on GoMocs.com.

Paladins Place 14th At Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate
Aiken, S.C. - Furman (306-286-308=900) fired a final round 308 to finish in a tie for 14th place on Tuesday at the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Matt Brown (76-70-74=220) led the way for Furman carding a final round four-over 74 to gain a share of 24th place while Matt Broome (77-70-77=224) carded a seven-over 77 to place 42nd.
Alabama's Bud Cauley (66-66-69=201) led the Crimson Tide to the tournament title and garnered individual medalist honors shooting a 69 on Tuesday to finish with a tournament record nine-under 201 over 54 holes. The Crimson Tide (288-277-284=849) claimed an 11-stroke victory over second place Virginia with Liberty, Chattanooga and East Carolina rounding out the top five in the 18-team field.
Cauley (-9) finished five strokes ahead of second place Harold Varner (71-67-68=206) of East Carolina.
The Paladins return home to host the Furman Intercollegiate March 18-20, at the Furman University Golf Club.

Cougars Finish Play in Palmetto Intercollegiate
AIKEN, S.C. - Sophomore John Duke Hudson earned his second consecutive top-five finish and the College of Charleston men's golf team finished tied for 14th at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Palmetto Golf Club.
Hudson, last week's Southern Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, shot rounds of 69-70-73 for a combined two-over 212. CofC carded rounds of 298-296-306 for a combined total of 900.
Alabama, the No. 3 team in the country according to the latest Golf Week/Sagarin Rankings, won the tournament with a team score of 849.
Bud Cauley from the Crimson Tide earned individual medalist honors with a record breaking nine-under 201.
The Cougars return to action Mar. 13-14 for the General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Elon Places in Tie for 16th at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
AIKEN, S.C. -- Elon shot a third round 307 on the final day of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament to finish in a tie for 16th place. The Phoenix posted a tournament score of 901 (298-296-307) in the 18-team field.
Elon's top finisher was Stephen Dressel who placed in a tie for 24th with a score of 220 (73-71-76). He was followed by Tanner Norton who finished in a tie for 38th with a mark of 223 (72-73-78). Jack Adkins posted a three-round score of 227 (79-75-73) to place in a 58th-place tie.
John Somers fired a 234 (77-77-80) over his three rounds to finish 78th in the field of 90 golfers. Finally, Leif Neijstrom placed 87th with a score of 240 (76-80-84).
Led by individual winner Bud Cauley (66-66-69--201), Alabama took home the team title with a two-day score of 849 (288-277-284).
Elon will next participate in the Furman Intercollegiate March 18-20 in Greenville, S.C.
Western Carolina Men's Golf Finishes 14th at Rain-Shortened Samford Intercollegiate
Freshman Collin Witiak paces Catamounts with career-best finish
Oneonta, Ala. - Western Carolina men's golf finished 14th at the rain-shortened Samford Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 6,987-yard Limestone Springs Golf Club. Standing 11th after the opening round, the Catamounts slipped to 14th-place overall as the second round was completed on Tuesday morning prior to the start of the final round.
The teams were approximately four or five holes shy of completing the third round of play before the bottom fell out with heavy rain and a major lightning storm rolled through central Alabama cutting the event short and leaving second round scores to stand as the final results.
WCU freshman Collin Witiak matched his opening-round score of two-over 74 to finish with a final tally of 148, tied for 18th to lead the Catamounts. The top 20 finish was the best for the Columbia, S.C., native while his stroke average of 74 matched the best tournament showing for the first-year player.
Freshman Greg Bunner finished tied for 38th overall with a 36-hole score of 151, shaving one stroke off his opening round 76 with a 75 on the second 18 holes. Sophomore Trey White, who led the team after the opening round, dropped into a tie for 47th at 153, shooting 80 on the second 18 holes.
Rounding out WCU's side were freshmen Jack Walsh (t-74th, 159) and Michael Fitzgerald (t-88th, 169).
First-round leader Central Arkansas maintained its hold of the top spot with an even-par 588 in the second round to claim team champion honors with a 36-hole score of 14-under, 562. Alabama's jayvee squad was second, 18-strokes in arrears at 580, followed by Illinois State in third with a two-day total of 588. Winthrop trimmed seven strokes off its opening round team score of 299 to shoot 292 in the second round to finish fourth at 591 with Belmont rounding out the top five with a two-round score of 593.
Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas finished tied with Hunter Slatton of Alabama atop the leader board with identical scores of eight-under, 136. First-round leader, Lecuyer, shot 69 in the second round while Slatton carded a tournament-low round of 66 to rally to share medalist honors.
Western Carolina returns to action March 13-14 at the General Hackler Championship, hosted by Coastal Carolina at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Myrtle Beach. The tournament consists of 36 holes on Sunday and a single-round, 18 holes on Monday.
Georgia Southern Golf Stays Put at 11th at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto
AIKEN, S.C. - On the final and toughest round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate that saw a rise in the course play to a stroke average of 76.11, the Georgia Southern Golf team held its ground, finishing 11th in the 18-team field. Alabama, carding a 9-over 849 tournament total at the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club, finished in first place. The Tide's Bud Cauley took home individual medalist honors by firing a 9-under 201 (66-66-69) over three rounds, a tournament record.
The Eagles finished the tournament with an 893 (296-291-306) tournament total. Sophomore Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria), one stroke off from his 22nd-place tie a year ago at the Palmetto, finished in a tie for 30th with an 11-over 221 (74-71-76). Senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.), coming off his best round at the tournament in two appearances, signed for a 7-over 77 to finish in a tie for 42nd place (75-72-77).
Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) and Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) both finished back-to-back behind Deal. Blondell finished in a tie for 46th place (72-74-79) while Gruber recorded the team's best round, shooting a five-over 75, to finish tied for 55th (77-74-75). Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) concluded the tournament in a tie for 71st place (75-78-78).
"The course showed its teeth today and we had too many doubles on the card," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We need to clean that up and work on some other aspects of our game as we look forward to coming home for the Schenkel."
Georgia Southern will return to action next week in familiar surroundings as the Statesboro community plays host to the 32nd Schenkel Invitational March 18-20th. The tournament will feature one of the nation's best fields. Eight of the 15 teams are ranked in the Top 50 according to the latest golfweek/sargarin rankings and will compete for the prestigious team and individual titles.
