Record Round Lifts Clemson To Furman Intercollegiate Title

Greenville, S.C. - The Clemson men's golf team (287-289-272=848) fired a tournament record round of 272 (-16) to clinch its second straight Furman Intercollegiate title at the par-72 Furman University Golf Club on Sunday afternoon while Purdue's William Sjaichudin (65-69-72=206) claimed individual medalist honors.

Freshman Thomas Bradshaw (72-73-64=209) matched the tournament's single round record and set a new competitive record at the Furman Golf Club, renovated three years ago, by shooting an eight-under 64 to rally the Tigers from a four-stroke deficit after 36 holes to a 12-stroke victory. Bradshaw posted seven birdies and an eagle at the par five No. 15 on his way to a third place finish. Jodie Mudd (1981) of Georgia Southern and Matt Peterson (1988) of Georgia previously posted rounds of 64 in the Furman Intercollegiate.

Clemson's Crawford Reeves (73-73-68=214) and McCuen Elmore (75-72-69=216) totaled rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, to power the Tigers past second place Kennesaw State (-4) and third place Virginia Tech (-2). The Tigers' 272 was four strokes better than the previous best round of 276 set by Ohio State in 1997.

Sjaichudin, who shot 65 on Friday, capped the tournament with a 72 to finish one stroke in front of second place Harold Varner (67-70-70=207) of East Carolina. Tied after 53 holes, Sjaichudin notched a birdie at No. 18 while Varner settled for par and second place.

Furman's Matt Broome (-1) carded a four-under 68 on Sunday to finish 10th and help the Paladins (+9) to a fifth place finish behind East Carolina (+3). The junior totaled seven birdies, including four straight after making the turn onto the front nine. Matt Brown shot a final round 74 to finish at one-over par for the tournament while Anthony Aloi used an eagle at No. 2 to shoot 72 and finish at two-over.

Auburn Wins 32nd Schenkel Invitational in Playoff

STATESBORO, Ga. - Trailing Florida by five strokes going into the final three holes of the final round, Auburn forced a playoff and then won the team title on the first playoff hole to repeat as team champions at the 32nd Schenkel Invitational. The 32nd annual tournament, contested at the par-72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club, witnessed its first team playoff since 1999 when Clemson defeated Georgia. Ninth-ranked Auburn becomes the first repeat champion at the Schenkel since Georgia, which won the team titles in 2000 and 2001.

Clinging to a six-stroke lead over second-place Florida heading into today's final round, the fifth-ranked Tigers quickly saw their advantage vanish as the Gators made the turn at 7-under. Auburn, 6-over through the first 15 holes, played the final three holes at even par to keep pace with Florida. As a team, the Gators were 5-under heading into the last three holes, but struggled in the end to finish in a tie for first place at a 16-under 848.

Both teams met on the first hole for the start of playoff competition with two five-man pairings. Florida won the coin toss to determine the group pairings and elected to have three players in the first five-man pairing, allowing Auburn to place three of its five players in the next pairing. The Tigers won the playoff on the first hole with the team recording three pars, one bogey and birdie to Florida's two pars, two bogeys and one birdie.

On the individual side, Florida's Bank Vongvanij held off North Florida's Kevin Aylwin by one-stroke for tournament medalist honors. Vongvanij parred the 16th and 17th hole to hold onto the lead and won at 9-under (66-68-73=207). Aylwin scattered four birdies on the back nine to close the round at 5-under 67 to advance eight spots up to a second-place tie with Auburn's Kyle Kopsick at 8-under. Florida's Phillip Choi placed fourth at 6-under. Auburn's Blayne Barber and Ben Kholes of Virginia finished at 5-under for a fifth-place tie.

Nineteenth-ranked Virginia tied its 2010 performance at third with a 6-under 858. No. 12 LSU fell back to fourth place at 2-under 862, while North Florida jumped ahead of No. 20 N.C. State for fifth position at 1-under 863.

Georgia Southern, beginning the final round in a tie for 10th place, climbed three spots into a seventh-place tie with Minnesota. The Eagles concluded the three-day tournament at 16-over (297-285-298) to finish ahead of No. 38 Tennessee, Ole Miss, No. 27 Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Mississippi State.

"It was good to move up the board a couple spots," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We got three solid scores in today and Sharkey hung in there after a really rough start. Hopefully we can use the last two days of the Schenkel to build some confidence going into our last couple of events in the spring."

Senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) led the Eagles on the leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 20th place with a 2-over 218 (74-71-73). Deal carded four birdies, three on the front-nine, for a 1-over 73. Thomas Sharkey(Helensburgh, Scotland) played the final five holes 2 under to sign for a 6-over 78. Sharkey would finish in a 32nd-place tie.

Teammates Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) and Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) finished the Schenkel Invitational in tie for 50th place at 8-over 224. Blondell sunk two birdies on the front-nine to finish even-par while Sander shot an 81. Jake Ware (Statesboro, Ga.) posted his best round of the tournament, recording a 3-over 75 for a tie for 74th place.

Three players competed as individuals for Georgia Southern this weekend. Drew Guffey (Bartow, Fla.) finished at 6-over 222 for the tournament, placing him in a tie for 40th place (73-67-82). Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot 4-over 76 in his last round to move up two spots to a 60th-place tie (73-78-76). Lewis Gruber(Tallahassee, Fla.) shot a 5-over 77 for a 229 three-round total.

Georgia Southern closes out its regular season in two weeks at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational April 2-3rd. The 54-hole tournament, at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., will be the Eagles final tuneup before they compete at the Southern Conference tournament April 17-19th, at The Country Club of South Carolina.

Chattanooga Finishes 6th at Furman Intercollegiate
Stephan Jaeger's finishes tied for 10th at -1, 215, as Mocs shoot 4th lowest round of the day

GREENVILLE, S.C.---The Chattanooga men's golf team moved up to a sixth-place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate after today's one-over par 289. The Mocs shot 878, 14 over, for the three-day event.

Chattanooga shot minus one over its final 36 holes as today's 289 was tied for fourth lowest. Yesterday's 286 was the low Saturday round and the one-under par total over the last two rounds was second best in the 22-team field.

"I'm really proud of the way we played over the last two days," said head coach Mark Guhne. "We showed what we are capable of, but now we have to show it for three rounds. The last two times out we've been really good for 36 holes."

Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) posted his second top 10 in the last three tournaments tying for 10th at one-under par 215. Jaeger shot level par 72 for his Sunday round with one birdie, 16 pars and a bogey.

Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the low final round for Guhne's five-some firing a minus-two 70. Bunn was solid with three birdies, 14 pars and a single bogey.

Jaeger and Bunn helped the Mocs move up two spots on the leaderboard from eighth to start the day. Chattanooga ended one shot ahead of Purdue and Gardner-Webb overtaking the duo beating them by seven and six strokes, respectively.

Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) had the rollercoaster round of the day. Weilguni tallied an eagle and six birdies but shot 74 (+2) due to just three pars. He finished tied for 24th at 218 (+2), while Bunn tied for 34th shooting plus five, 221.

Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) rounded out the team scoring with a 73 (+1) despite battling migraine symptoms over his final six holes. He tied for 51st at 225 (+9). Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) had the drop score with a 75 (+3) to wind up tied for 59th one shot behind Robb at 226.

Clemson defended its title shooting a tournament-record round of 272, 16-under par, today. The Tigers came-from-behind to pass second round leaders Kennesaw State and Virginia Tech. KSU ended up second at 860 (-4), while the Hokies came in third (862).

Purdue's William Sjaichudin captured medalist honors holding off East Carolina's Harold Varner by a stroke. Sjaichudin shot -10 for 54 holes with an even-par 72 in the final round. Varner's 70 (-2) gave him a total of 207, minus nine.

The Mocs return to action next Sunday, March 27, for the first round of the Linger Longer Invitational. The event is played at the Reynolds Plantation Great Waters Course in Greensboro, Ga. Live scoring can be found on GoMocs.com.

Elon Rises to 14th in Final Round of Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Elon men's golf team fired a final round 295 to climb to 14th in the final standings in the 22-team Furman Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 900.

In the 124-golfer field, Elon's Jack Adkins placed in a tie for 39th with a tournament total score of 222 (77-71-74). He was followed by John Somers who finished in a tie for 51st with a 225 (74-77-74).

Stephen Dressel carded a 71 in his final round to finish with a 227 (76-80-71) and tie for 63rd while Clay Holland's 229 (80-73-76) had him tied for 78th. Rounding out the field for Elon was Tanner Norton who finished in a tie for 115th with a 238 (83-77-78).

Clemson finished at 16-under thanks to a third round mark of 272 to claim the team title with a tournament score of 848 (287-289-272). Kennesaw State (282-290-288--860) placed second while Virginia Tech (285-287-290--862) was third.

Purdue's William Sjaichudin led throughout, taking home the individual title with a score of 206 (65-69-72).

Elon will next play April 11-12 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational.

 

WCU Men's Golf Finishes 15th at Furman Intercollegiate
Jack Walsh leads Catamounts with top 40 finish

Greenville, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team shot 303 on Sunday to finish 16th overall in the 42nd annual Furman Intercollegiate hosted at the par-72 Furman University Golf Club. Freshman Jack Walsh led the Catamounts in a tie for 39th while classmate Greg Bunner lead the team in scoring in the final round at two-over, 74.

Walsh got off to a rough start on his final 18 holes on Sunday, scoring double-bogey on his opening hole with a bogey on the par-4 No. 3 to move to three-over. He did post his lone birdie of the round on the par-4 No. 7 to make the turn at two-over, but four bogies on the back nine relegated him to six-over, 78, in the final round and left him at 222 for the tournament.

Bunner, who finished tied for 95th overall, carded two of his three birdies on the day in his first two holes with the third coming on the 18th. He made the turn even, finishing his final nine holes with three bogies and the birdie on the last hole. Bunner shot 232 over the 54-hole event.

Clemson (848) fired a tournament record-low round of 16-under, 272, on Sunday to rally from third place to clinch its second-straight Furman Intercollegiate title by a dozen strokes over second-place Kennesaw State (860). Virginia Tech, which rallied to tie Kennesaw State for the team lead after the second round, slipped to third, two strokes in arrears of the Owls in the final standings. East Carolina finished in fourth place while the host Paladins came home fifth.

Purdue's William Sjaichudin led wire-to-wire, posting an even-par 72 on Sunday to edge East Carolina's Harold Varner by a stroke, 206-to-207, to claim individual medalist honors. Clemson's Thomas Bradshaw rallied from a tie for 22nd after 36 holes to finish third, tying a tournament record and establishing a competitive record for the Furman Golf Club which was renovated three years ago with a eight-under, 64.

Rounding out WCU's finishers were Collin Witiak in a tie for 41st, one stroke in arrears of Walsh at 223 and Michael Fitzgerald in a tie for 91st at 231. Fitzgerald birdied two of his first six holes and made the turn at one-under on Sunday. However, four bogies and a double-bogey on the 18th relegated him to four-over 76. Sophomore Trey White finished tied for 107th after posting a five-over 77 on Sunday to shoot 234 over the weekend.

Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks as it travels to the UK Bluegrass Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky at the University Club in Lexington April 8-10. The Catamounts finished tied for 17th at the event a season ago.

 

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF CONCLUDES PLAY AT 2011 FURMAN INTERCOLLEGIATE
--- The Bulldogs finish 19th at the talent-laden tournament ---

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team closed out competition in the 2011 Furman Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 909 (308-294-307) Sunday as the Bulldogs finished tied for 19th place in the highly-touted tournament held at the Furman University Golf Course.

After a team-best round of 294 Saturday, Samford turned in a third-round mark of 307 Sunday to fall back to 19th place. Clemson dominated the competition in the three-day Furman Intercollegiate and posted a total team score of 16-under-par 848 (287-289-272). Clemson finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Kennesaw State and 14 strokes in front of third-place Virginia Tech.

Samford was paced in the 54-hole event by sophomore Casey O'Toole. The Bulldogs' native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the tournament with a team-best tally of 225 (76-68-81). Senior Martin Bunt proved to be one of the most consistent players for Samford as he carded a three-round score of 228 (77-75-76).

Rounding out the starting five for the Bulldogs were sophomores Drew Aimone (79-74-77 = 230), Bill Nabors (76-77-78 = 231) and Gabe Hyde (79-77-76 = 232).

Purdue's William Sjaichudin won the championship title of the individual competition as he turned in a 10-under-par 206. He barely topped East Carolina's Harold Varner who finished a stroke behind at 207 (67-70-70).

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 28-29 as the Bulldogs head to Glencoe, Ala., for the 2011 Jacksonville State University Intercollegiate to be held at the Silver Lakes Golf Club.

 

Terriers Finish Ninth at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Brent Whitehead finished tied for 20th to lead Wofford as the men's golf team finished in ninth place at the three-round Furman Intercollegiate.

Whitehead fired rounds of 74, 73 and 70 for a 217 to pace the team. Chandler Brazeal shot a 79, 75 and 70 for a 224, and Zach Capps had scores of 77, 73 and 75 for a 225. Charles Moore had his first round score of 75 count towards the total, while Mark Joye had his second and third rounds of 73 and 74 added.

Total the Terriers shot an 888 for a +24. Clemson won the tournament with an 848 for a -16.

The Terriers will return to the course when they host the Coca Cola Wofford Invitational April 11 and April 12 at the Spartanburg Country Club.

 

Davidson Men's Golf Places 17th at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Davidson men's golf team concluded play in the 42nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at the Furman University Golf Club,placing 17th in a strong 22-team field with a three-round score of 905 (304+295+306).

Sophomore John Skeadas led the Wildcats for the tournament by tying for 34th place at 221. Skeadas slipped out of the top 10 individually after firing aseven-over-par 79 Sunday. He opened the tournament with a three-under-par 69 Friday and a one-over 73 Saturday.

Junior Jackson Taylor posted the top final-round score for Davidson with a three-over 75. He finished in a tie for 63rd at 227 (79+73+75).

Freshman Sam Echikson finished two strokes back at 229 (77+74+78), while classmate Richard Fountain followed at 232 (79+77+76). Senior Bobby Urso finished one stroke back at 233 (81+75+77) to round out the ‘Cats' contingent.

No. 42 Clemson (287-289-272=848) fired a tournament record round of 272 (-16) to clinch its second straight Furman Intercollegiate title on the par-72, 6,994-yard course, while No. 37 Purdue's William Sjaichudin (65-69-72=206) claimed individual medalist honors. There were five top-50 teams in the tournament.

Davidson will close the regular season at the Irish Creek Collegiate April 9-10, co-hosting with Charlotte in conjunction with the Charlotte Sports Commission at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. In addition to the Wildcats and 49ers, North Carolina, Duke, and Wake Forest will be among thecompetitors in the 2011 field.
