Golf Places Third at Amelia National Intercollegiate
Gruber and Hartman finish in top seven to lead Eagles
Fernandina Beach, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Golf team fired a 2-under par 286 on Tuesday to finish at 866 (298-282-286) and in third place at the Amelia National Intercollegiate. Senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) and freshman Zach Hartman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) both posted 1-under par 215s to tie for seventh place in the individual standings. Only No. 6 North Florida (843) and No. 13 Texas A&M (853) finished ahead of the Eagles in the 15 team field.
The Eagles overcame a shaky start Monday morning by shaving 16 strokes off their score heading into the final round. Sitting in fourth place and eight strokes behind Virginia Commonwealth, Georgia Southern posted three scores of par or better on Tuesday to pass VCU for third place.
Gruber's 215 (75-70-70) was his third score under par this fall and Hartman (72-72-71=215) became the third Eagle this season to break par in his first collegiate start. Freshman Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) shot 218 (75-70-73) to tie for 12th place and freshman teammate Scott Wolfes shot 219 to finish tied for 14th place.
"Our last two rounds were both under par and nine of our final ten rounds were 73 or better--that's the kind of consistency we've been striving for this fall," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "With the exception of our tournament in Durham, it was a really successful fall for us. I'm pleased with our effort and we'll continue working hard to get better."
Georgia Southern Golf will return to the practice links to prepare for the spring part of its 2011-12 schedule which begins Feb. 11-12 when they travel to the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.

ASU Men's Golf Wraps Up Fall Slate
DeLand, Fla. - Appalachian State University men's golf completed its fall tournament schedule with a fifth-place finish at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational. The Mountaineers carded a consistent 301-300-302=903 (+39).
Sophomore John Michael Cole (Fayetteville, N.C./Cape Fear) led the Apps with a 72-72-80=224 (+8) to tie for 10th place. The newcomer carded 35 pars and an eagle over the 54-hole event.
Darren Cook (Boone, N.C./Watauga) finished two strokes back in 14th place at 76-74-76=226 (+10), while Jason Woodall (Yanceyville, N.C./The Elon School) placed 16th at 78-77-73=228 (+12). Cook's cumulative +5 scoring on the course's par-four holes ranked 11th at the tournament, while Woodall tied Cole's mark of 35 pars to tie for fourth in the 43-player field.
Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian) fired a 75-77-79=231 (+15) to place 20th at the event and Daniel Walsh (Wilkesboro, N.C./West Wilkes)placed 35th with an 81-81-74=236 (+20).
In individual competition, Drew Harris (Lenoir, N.C./Hibriten) matched Nichols in 20th place with an 81-80-70=231 (+15). He holed eight birdies.
Florida Gulf Coast took home the team title with an 870 (+6), well ahead of second-place High Point's 893 (+29).
Bethune-Cookman and host Stetson tied for third at 899 (+35), just four strokes ahead of Appalachian.
Stetson's Sam Ryder claimed the individual medal with a 207 (-9), six strokes ahead of High Point's Chase Wilson.
Head coach Bill Dicus' squad returns to the High Country for the remainder of the semester. ASU returns to the links in the spring for a challenging slate, which will be released in the coming weeks.
Elon Men's Golf Ends Fall Season at Amelia National Intercollegiate
AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- Stuart Kaufman shot a 224 over his three rounds to finish in a tie for 29th as the Elon men's golf team concluded its fall season with a 15th-place showing at the Amelia National Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix shot a 931 (307-310-314) over its three rounds of competition.
Kaufman posted a final-round mark of 80 on his way to a 224. He posted rounds of 74 and 70 on Monday. He was one of three players in the field of 84 to tie for 29th.
Finishing in a tie for 63rd was Tanner Norton. Norton ended the tournament with a score of 234 (74-82-78). Erick Stone tied for 71st after a tournament total of 240 (77-78-85).
The duo of John Somers and Jack Adkins ended the event tied for 75th with a 242. Somers posted rounds of 82, 83 and 77 while Adkins shot an 83, 80 and 79.
North Florida had the top three finishers, including medalist Sean Dale who shot a nine-under 207 (70-67-70) to help lead the co-host Ospreys to the team crown with a mark of 843 (279-278-286). Texas A&M (291-279-283--853) was second while co-host Georgia Southern (298-282-286--866), VCU (286-286-304--876) and Xavier (297-291-299--887) rounded out the top five.
Two other SoCon programs were a part of the 15-team field - Furman placed ninth with a 905 (307-301-297) while Wofford was tied for 10th with a 908 (307-289-312).
Men's Golf Slips to Tenth in Final Round of Amelia National Intercollegiate
FERNANDINA BEACH, FLA. - The Wofford men's golf team slipped to tenth after the final round at the Amelia National Intercollegiate hosted at the par-72 7,166 yard Amelia National Golf and Country Club.
The Terriers shot a 307 in round one, responded with a 289 in round two and finished with a 312 in the final round to wrap up the tournament with a 908.
Co-host North Florida won the event with a 279-278-286-843.
Chandler Brazeal had the best finish for the Terriers as he completd the tournament in a tie for 24th with a 75-71-75 - 221. Zach Capps finished tied for 26th with a 74-70-78-222, and Charles Moore finished tied for 63th 80-72-82-234. Hayes Brown entered the clubhouse tied for 65th with a 78-76-81-235, while Brent Whitehead carded an 85-78-78-241.
The Amelia National Intercollegiate wrapped up the Terriers fall season. Wofford will return to action in the spring with The Charleston Shootout at the Links of Stono Ferry.
Paladins Shoot Final Round 297, Place Ninth At Amelia Island Intercollegiate
Fernandina Beach, Fla. -- The Furman men's golf team posted a final round 297 to claim ninth place on Tuesday afternoon in the Amelia Island Intercollegiate at the par-72 Amelia National Golf Club.
Johnny Kyger (+14) led the Paladins with a final round 72 while Matt Brown (+10) carded a two-over 74 and freshman Josh Chay shot a three-over 75. Senior Austin Reeves (+4) shot a 76 to pace the Paladins with an 18th place finish.
The University of North Florida (-21) claimed the tournament title by 10 strokes over second place Texas A&M (-11) with Georgia Southern (+2), VCU (+12) and Xavier (+23) rounding out the top five in the 15-team field. The Paladins (+41) nine-over par final round helped them climb three spots ahead of Arkansas State and Wofford who tied for 10th.
UNF's Sean Dale (-9) shot a two-under 70 on Tuesday to hold off teammate Kevin Phelan (-6) for individual medalist honors.
Furman returns to action at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, February 20-21, in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
