Hoadley Leads UNCG at VCU Shootout

UNCG men's golf tied for fifth after two rounds at VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. - Robert Hoadley's steady day with rounds of 71 and 70 led the way for UNCG on the opening day of the Verizon Wireless VCU Shootout, putting the Spartans in a tie for fifth place entering Tuesday's final round.  

The Spartans carded rounds of 287 and 296 to sit at 583, tied with Charlotte for fifth place. UNC Wilmington leads the team standings after a blistering afternoon round of 276 to sit at 564 entering the final round. East Carolina is second, seven shots back, followed by Richmond and Wake Forest in a tie for third.

Iowa State's Nate McCoy and East Carolina's Harold Vamer are tied for the individual lead, sitting at 137. UNCW's Thomas Bass is two shots back. Hoadley is in a three-way tie for fifth, four shots back.

Hoadley, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., began his day on No. 10 in the shotgun format. He played the back side of the course in 36 one birdie and one bogey to begin the day. He then played his second nine - the front side - in one-under par. In the afternoon, he played the back in 36 again, but three birdies against just one bogey in his final nine holes put him at two-under for the round and three-under for the tournament.

Justin Clement was tied for the lead after the opening round. He shot a 68 in the morning, but dropped from the leaders after three consecutive bogeys early in his second round. He finished the afternoon round with a 75 and is tied for 12th place, six shots off the lead.

Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start, weather permitting.

Cougars 11th at Gridiron Classic

SOUTH BEND, IND. - John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) and Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) each carded a 150 in two rounds to lead the #46-ranked College of Charleston men's golf team to 11th after 36 holes of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic being held Sept. 27-28 at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.  #15 Iowa and host #41 Notre Dame each posted a 567 to share the lead at the 7,023-yard, par-70 course.  The Cougars posted a 598 in two rounds to sit just two strokes out of the top 10.

Sitting at third is #32 San Francisco with a 577 and in fourth is Lamar with a 581.  Rounding out the top five is Houston with a 584.

Leading for individual medalist honors are San Francisco's Taylor Travis and Notre Dame's Tom Usher.  Both shot a 139, with Travis carding a low 68 in the first round.

Hudson shares 39th-place with a 150 after posting a 72 in the firs round and a 78 in the second.  His first round saw him card two birdies and an eagle (hole 17).  Ellis saw just six bogeys and two double-bogeys in 36 holes and had one birdie to sit with a 150 and a tie at 39th as well for the Cougars.  Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 46th with a 151 after notching seven birdies on the day.  Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas) also tied for 46th along with Breen.  Ross Tooley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) rounded out the Cougar effort with a 152 for a tie at 52nd.  Highlighting his day was an eagle on the par-four hole 18 in the first round.  He birdied it in the second.

The Cougars play the third and final round from hole 10 with Tooley getting things started at 10:30 a.m. EST.
