Norton Shoots Eight-Under to Put Elon in First at Sea Trail Intercollegiate 

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- Tanner Norton posted an eight-under-par 64 and sits in first place in the field of 69 golfers while teammate Stephen Dressel sits in third after carding a five-under 67 to put the Elon Phoenix in first place after the opening round of the Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate.
 
Elon recorded a score of 275 and sits six strokes ahead of second place Samford (281). USC Upstate finished the round with a 284 to sit in third while George Mason (286) is fourth and Charleston Southern and High Point (288) are tied at fifth.
 
Elon's Jack Adkins posted a 71 and sits tied for 13th while Leif Neijstrom tallied a 73 and is tied for 23rd to round out the Phoenix's top four. John Somers posted a 75 to sit in a tie for 44th. Playing as individuals, Dylan Morgan is tied for 23rd after shooting a 73 and Clay Holland sits in a tie for 63rd with a score of 79.

The Samford Bulldogs put four players in the top 20 after the first round. Gabe Hyde sits tied for fourth after posting a four-under 68 while Casey O'Toole is tied at seventh with a 69. Drew Aimone and Bill Nabor sit in a tie at 16th with an even-par 72.
 
McKenzie Oref of USC Upstate leads the Spartans after carding a six-under 66 to sit in second place. Tyler Comer is tied for 16th after shooting par while Brad Sill and Will Graves sit in 23rd with a score of 73.
 
High Point's Chase Wilson and Charleston Southern's Jacobo Pastor are tied with Hyde in fourth place with a 68. Guilford's Mat Hennick sits tied with O'Toole in seventh place after carding a 69. Sam Ryder of Stetson, Delaware's Stephen Scialo, Appalachian State's Jay Brown and Branson Real of George Mason all posted a two-under 70 to tie for ninth place.
 
The Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate will continue with the second round on Saturday, September 25 beginning at 8:30.

 

Davidson Men's Golf Sixth After First Round of Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Freshman Richard Fountain led Davidson to a sixth-place ranking with an even-par 71 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Men's Golf Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club Friday.

Individually, Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) is in a tie for 16th. Senior Bobby Urso (Beverly Hills, Mich.), junior Jackson Taylor (Wilmington, N.C.) and sophomore John Skeadas (Savannah, Ga.) are all just one stroke off at a one-over par 72 and tied for 28th place to give Davidson a total score of 287, three-over par.

Memphis and Oklahoma lead with a total team score of 274. Oklahoma's Will Kropp is the sole leader after shooting a 65, six-under par. Mississippi (282), South Carolina (285) and Vanderbilt (285) follow Memphsi and Oklahoma. Golfweek/Sagarin 2010 top-50 teams Chattanooga (eighth, 289) and Middle Tennessee State (tie-ninth, 292) and Southern Conference foe Western Carolina (11th place, 294) trail the Wildcats.

A total of 17 teams are competing in the tournament on the par-71, 7,100 yard course. The second round will begin at 8 a.m. CT Friday.

 

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF FIRES 7-UNDER PAR TO PLACE SECOND ON OPENING DAY OF ELON TOURNEY

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team turned in its best round of the 2010 fall season Friday as the Bulldogs combined to shoot a 7-under-par 281 on the opening day of the Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate being hosted by Elon University. With its performance, Samford sits in second place in the prestigious 12-team tournament.

Elon recorded a score of 275 and will enter Saturday's competition six strokes ahead of Samford. USC Upstate finished the round with a 284 to sit in third while George Mason (286) is fourth, and both Charleston Southern and High Point (288) are tied for fifth place.

Chattanooga Opens in Eighth at Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate

Redshirt freshman Chris Robb cards even-par 71 to pace Mocs

FRANKLIN, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is in eighth place after 18 holes of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate at Vanderbilt Legends Club on the south course.  The Mocs 290 was paced by redshirt Chris Robb's (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) even-par 71.

Robb opened the round with a triple bogey seven on the 10th hole as UTC started on the back side.  He bounced back with birdies on the three par fives on the side (14, 17, 18) to turn at level par.  After bogeys on four and five, Robb carded three consecutive birdies before a bogey on nine ended his round at 71.

Memphis and Oklahoma are tied atop the leaderboard with 10-under par totals of 274.  Ole Miss is third at 282 (-2).

Robb is tied for 17th overall at 71.  Sophomore Simon Forsslund (Stockholm, Sweden), playing in his second collegiate event as a team counter, posted a solid round of 72 (+1).  He is tied for 29th.

Sophomore Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) is one shot back with a 73 (+2), tied for 38th.  Junior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) is yet another stroke back tied for 47th at 74 (+3).  True freshman Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the drop score with an 80 (+9).

Oklahoma's Will Kropp is the individual leader after a six-under par 65.  Memphis' Jack Belote is in second with a 66 (-5) followed by Ryan Booth of Western Carolina in third at 67 (-4).

Chattanooga tees off No. 1 Saturday morning at 8:05 a.m. (CDT).  The Mocs are paired with Akron and Middle Tennessee.  Bunn will lead off followed by Jaeger (8:14), Fox (8:23), Forsslund (8:32) and Robb (8:41).

Ryan Booth Third, WCU Men's Golf Tied for 11th at Mason Rudolph Tournament play continues on Saturday and Sunday

Nashville, Tenn. - Western Carolina junior transfer Ryan Booth carded an opening-round, four-under 67 on Friday to stand in third place, two strokes off the individual lead at the Mason Rudolph Championship being held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Booth paced the Catamounts which carded a 10-over 294 through the opening 18 holes to stand tied for 11th entering Saturday's second round at the par-71, 7,100-yard course.

Booth currently leads the tournament in par-4 scoring, averaging four-under (3.56) and is tied for second with six birdies.

WCU's remaining scorers on Friday were all freshmen. Rookie Greg Bunner is tied for 48th after shooting a three-over, 74, while classmates Jack Walsh is tied for 58th (75) and Collin Witiak is tied for 74th after carding a seven-over, 78.

Catamount junior Kyle Wilson, who led the team at its season-opening event, withdrew from the opening round without carding a score.

Overall, Memphis and Oklahoma both carded first round scores of 10-under, 274, on Friday to lead the 17-team field. Mississippi is eight strokes in arrears in third place, followed by a two-way tie for fourth place between South Carolina and Vanderbilt at one-over, 285. WCU is tied with South Alabama for 11th, two strokes outside the top 10.

Individually, Oklahoma's Will Kropp shot an opening round 65 and holds a one-stroke lead over Jack Belote (66) from Memphis. Booth is third with a one-stroke advantage over a two-way tie for fourth-place between Charlie Grace from Vanderbilt and Carlson Cox from Memphis.
