Hudson Holds Three-Stroke Lead After First Day, Cougars in Third
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Sophomore John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) fired a five-under par 139 over two rounds including a first-round eagle on No. 16 to top the leaderboard as the College of Charleston men's golf team stands third after the first day of play at The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Hudson, who also led on the first day of the U.S. Amateur in August, continues solid play on the links over the past two months. He holds a three-stroke lead over his nearest competitor, Sean Bosdosh of Maryland, who shot a two-under 142. Hudson made four birdies in the second round to card a tournament-low round of 68. No other player in the 12-team field shot better than a 70. He also shot one-under in the first round on the Pete Dye-designed course which will host the 2012 PGA Championship.
"It was exciting, especially for the first tournament of the year," Hudson said. "I played a little rough in the first round, but came back to do much better in the second round. I just have to keep this momentum going tomorrow and see what happens."
As a team, the Cougars made a comeback in the second round after being tied for sixth after the first round (+12). They trail only Notre Dame (+8) and No. 42 North Carolina State (+9). In his CofC debut, freshman Parker Allen (Blythewood, S.C.) shot an 86 in the first round, but rebounded with an even par 72 in the second.
Aside from Hudson's eagle, the best shot of the day came from Kyle Wilson of Western Carolina who made a first-round hole-in-one on No. 5. CofC senior Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) also made eagle on No. 2 to start the day.
"I'm very excited about the way we played today," said fifth-year CofC head coach Mark McEntire. "John Duke leading the golf tournament is a very good thing. It was a great team effort. Every one of our players contributed and I believe we have a good chance to win this thing."
The Cougars will close out the final 18 holes of tournament play tomorrow with another shot-gun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com <http://www.golfstat.com/> .
