Greenville, S.C. ? Recent Furman graduate and Easley, S.C., native Daniel Bowden highlighted a group of five golfers with ties to the Paladin golf program that qualified to participate in the 2010 United States Amateur Championship August 23-29, at the par-71 Chambers Bay Course in University Place, Wash.
Bowden, who helped Furman to a Southern Conference championship and NCAA Southeast Regional appearance in 2010, took medalist honors with a two-round 131 at the qualifier at Achasta by Reynolds in Dahlonega, Ga., on August 10. The All-SoCon selection finished three strokes ahead of the field.
Bowden will be joined in the U.S. Amateur by former Paladins Todd White, Robert Gerwin, Tim Spitz and sophomore newcomer Matt Brown. White, a four-time All-SoCon pick and 1988 SoCon individual medalist, qualified with a one-under 143 at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, S.C., last month. Gerwin (1987-89) finished first at the Camargo Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 3, while Brookeville, Md., native Matt Brown punched his ticket with a runner-up finish at the Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg, Pa.
Former Paladin Tim Spitz (1994-97) received an invitation to the U.S. Amateur based on his runner-up finish earlier this year at the U.S. Mid-Amateur.
