Rende Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar
It is the second such award for the Chattanooga area native in as many years
NORMAN, Okla. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golfer Derek Rende was named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars team announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He is one of 119 NCAA Division I student-athletes to earn the honor.
“Derek is a perfect example of the term student-athlete,” said head coach Mark Guhne. “He excelled on the course and in the classroom for four years. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Rende completed his eligibility in May at the NCAA Southwest Regional. In his four years, the Mocs won three Southern Conference titles and competed in four NCAA Regionals advancing to the NCAA Finals in 2009. He is a four-time All-SoCon selection and three-time PING All-Region performer.
This is his second All-America Scholar award. Earlier this week, he was named to the SoCon All-Academic team for the spring sports.
Rende is playing professionally this summer on the eGolf Professional Tour in North Carolina. He plans to return to Chattanooga in the fall to complete his degree in Criminal Justice.
Bartholomew Collects GCAA All-America Scholar Honor
NORMAN, Okla. -- Elon senior Phil Bartholomew has been named one of 119 NCAA Division I players on the 2010 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team which was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
To be eligible for this honor, individuals must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of the team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his institution.
Bartholomew boasts a 3.257 GPA as a business administration major with a concentration in finance. Over 11 tournaments, Bartholomew played 31 rounds with an average score of 74.94. His best finish during his senior campaign was a tie for fifth at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate where he shot a 213 (-3) in October. Bartholomew also posted top-20 individual finishes at the Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate (T20th) in September and the Southern Conference Championship (T15th) in April.
McKenzie and Medeiros Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars
NORMAN, Okla. ? The Golf Coaches Association of America today released the 2010 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. The list included two Wofford men’s golfers, seniors Garrett Medeiros and Mike McKenzie.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Medeiros led the team in 2009-10 with a 72.08 stroke average. He won the Davidson College Invitational in October with a one-under 215. McKenzie finished the year with a 74.39 stroke average. He earned a season-best fifth place finish at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
Furman’s Bowden Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman senior Daniel Bowden (Easley, S.C./Easley H.S.) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar for the second straight year, it was announced this week by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Bowden posted a team-best 72.8 stroke average during the 2009-10 season to help lead the Paladins to a Southern Conference championship and NCAA Southeast Regional bid for the first time since 2004. The Easley, S.C., native finished second at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate while leading Furman to a runner-up finish. He placed eighth at the SoCon Championship and scored a squad-best 26th place showing at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
The All-SoCon selection, who graduated with a degree in business administration, posted a 3.72 cumulative GPA.
