ELON, N.C. -- The upcoming North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will feature four golfers from the Elon program. Tanner Norton, Clay Holland, John Somers and Craig Wood will all compete in the event August 4-8 at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Norton qualified for the tournament after finishing in a tie for second at the North Carolina Match Player Qualifier at Walnut Creek on July 15. Norton fired a three-under 69 in a field of 87 players. Over his 18 holes, Norton recorded four birdies.
The other three Phoenix golfers all qualified in play at Forest Oaks on July 13. Somers led the trio with a +1 score of 73 to tie for 12th among the 90 competitors. Somers posted four birdies.
Wood finished in a tie for 24th with a +3 score of 75. He tallied two birdies on the par-72 course.
Holland tied for 29th with a four-over 76. He carded five birdies.
Competition on August 4 will begin with stroke play. The players will compete in two rounds of stroke play with the top 32 players qualifying for match play. The first and second rounds of match play will be held on August 6. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held on August 7 while the 18-hole championship match will be contested on August 8.
The North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship was created when the Carolinas Amateur Championship format was changed to a stroke play event. This marks the first year for the new Match Play Championship.
In addition to qualifying for the match play event, Somers also earned a spot as an alternate to the U.S. Amateur Championship which will be held August 23-29 at Chambers Bay in Washington. Somers claimed that spot with a score of 142 in rounds held at the Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C.
