Blondell Tied for Second, Eagles in Eighth After Two Rounds at Southeast Regional

ALPHARETTA, Ga. ? Logan Blondell finished strong on day two of the NCAA Southeast Regional, climbing into a tie for second place individually Friday (May 21). As a team, Georgia Southern added five strokes in the second round for a combined 293, 581 two-day total, at the Capital City Golf Club’s Crabapple Course, a par 70, 7,182 yard championship-style course.

 

Reducing its second round score by five strokes, Clemson slid past No. 1 seeded Oklahoma State and stands in first with a 561 (+1) total. The Tigers’ 1-over score is three ahead of the Cowboys and a comfortable 12 shots ahead of host Georgia Tech in third. Brigham Young moved into a tie for fourth alongside South Alabama, both with 576s. The Cougars stayed steady, shaving off two strokes, while the Jaguars jumped from a T7 position into a coveted top five position, slicing its score by eight strokes.

 

The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship to be held June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

 

Breaking a three-way tie for first place individually, Robbie Fillmore of BYU followed a first round 68 with a second round 69 to claim sole possession of first. Meanwhile, Blondell matched his first round 69 in the second round and currently stands in a three-way tie for second with Arkansas’ Jamie Marshall and Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein. Five players stand in a tie for fifth at even par 140.

 

“Again, we got three good scores today, but we didn’t play our best and if we want to compete at the highest level, we need four solid scores,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We played hard and I’m proud of the team for staying strong. We got off to a rough start early today, bounced back and then got in a little trouble at the end.”

 

For the second straight day, GS started off slow with three Eagles making bogey on the opening hole. Blondell and Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) were the only two Eagles to par the hole.

 

Junior Blondell moved to even with a bogey on 17, but slipped back to under par finishing with a birdie on 18 for his second round of 69. Blondell remains one of only four competitors in the red with a 2-under 138. Standing only one stroke out of first, Blondell will battle for the individual advancement to the NCAA Championship with the top individual not on a qualifying team earning a spot in the prestigious tournament.

 

Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was the second Eagle to match his opening round score. Fulford is 4-over for the tournament with consecutive rounds of 2-over 72s. The senior currently stands tied for 25th place.

 

Sander improved two strokes on his first round 75. The freshman parred the opening 10 holes to jumpstart a 3-over 73 round. Sander heads into the final round in a tie for 44th.

 

Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) and Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) rounded out the lineup for the Eagles. Deal posted a second round 79 for a 56th place tie, while Zabroske carded an 80 to claim part of 69th.

 

“Logan [Blondell] played a great round and Spence [Fulford] played solid,” noted Mays. “Tomorrow, we have to take care of our business and not worry about what everyone else is doing. We are in good position heading into the final round, we just need to finish strong tomorrow.”

 

For the final round, Georgia Southern will be paired with Arizona State and Wake Forest. Zabroske will lead the charge at 7:30 a.m. teeing off on the back nine followed by Deal, Sander, Fulford and Blondell.   

 

 

 

 

Reeves, Ulrich Pace Paladins In Second Round At NCAA Southeast Regional

 

Alpharetta, Ga. -- Austin Reeves and Jack Ulrich each posted an even-par 72 on Friday to propel the Furman men’s golf team to a 294 in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional at the Capital City Club’s par-70, 7,182-yard Crabapple Course.

 

Furman (292-294=586) is tied for 10th place with the University of Mississippi entering Saturday’s third and final round.  

 

Clemson (-1) opened up a five-stroke lead on second place Oklahoma State (+4) with Georgia Tech (+9), Brigham Young (+16) and South Alabama (+16) rounding out the top five.  The top five finishers in the 13-team NCAA Southeast Regional field and the top individual not on a top five team will advance to the NCAA Championship June 1-6, at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

 

Daniel Bowden, a native of Easley, S.C., joined Ulrich (75-72=147) and Reeves (79-72=151) in leading the Paladins with a one-over 73.  The senior holds a share of 25th place after 36 holes.

 

Saturday’s final round is set to tee-off at 7:30 a.m.  Furman will tee-off of No. 10 on Saturday beginning at 8:20 a.m.

Mocs in 11th Heading into Final Round of the NCAA Southwest Regional

Freshman Steven Fox’s 72 paced Chattanooga which is 13 shots out of the top 5

 

SANTEE, Calif. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team is in 11th-place through two rounds of the NCAA Southwest Regional at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.  Chattanooga’s second round 299 pushes the Mocs’ two-day total to 603, 27-over par.

 

UTC is 13 shots out of the top five which is the number of teams that advance to the championship field at The Honors Course June 1-6.  No. 1 Oregon leads the event at 584 (+6), two shots ahead of Cal at 586 (+10).  No. 12 UNLV is third at 588 (+12), followed by No. 13 Augusta State (589) and No. 24 Tennessee (590).

 

It was a familiar story.  The Mocs were able to put together three strong rounds only to have two come up a little short.

 

“It’s frustrating,” said head coach Mark Guhne.  “The guys are playing their hearts out, it just didn’t come together.  Our season has been like that.  It’s not any one person, just we can’t play consistently well at the same time.

 

“We need to post a number tomorrow,” added Guhne.  “The good news is we are capable, but we’ve dug ourselves a hole.”

 

True freshman Steven Fox had the best round of the day for the Mocs with an even-par 72.  Fox is now tied for 13th at 147 (+3).

 

Sophomore Stephan Jaeger is just a shot behind Fox tied for 18th at 148 (+4).  He matched his opening round 74 and has shot a 75 or better in seven of eight NCAA postseason rounds.

 

Senior Derek Rende came out firing standing at two-under par early on before finishing with a one-over par 73.  He is tied for 50th for 152 (+8).

 

Senior Fredrik Qvicker rounded out the team scoring with an 80 (+8) moving him to 156 for the tourney.  He is followed by fellow senior J.T. Clendenin at 169.

 

Cal State-Northridge’s Nick Delio leads individually after today’s 69 (-3) gives him a 140 (-4).  Eddie Olson (UNLV) and Daniel Miernicki (Oregon) are tied for second at 141 (-3).

 

The Mocs hit the course at 8:20 a.m. (PDT), with Clendenin leading the way off the 10th hole.  He’ll be followed by Qvicker, Rende, Jaeger and Fox.  UTC is paired with Missouri and Arizona.

Competition Continues Despite Rain at NCAA Southeast Regional

ATLANTA, Ga. ? Men’s golfers Garrett Medeiros and Mark Joye completed the second day of competition at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Atlanta on Friday, despite inclement weather that delayed tee times by approximately two hours.

Medieros shot a 73 in the second round, for a two-round total of 145, and is tied for 30th individually. Joye carded a 77 in the second round, improving on a first round score of 78.

Clemson and Oklahoma State are headed for a final-round showdown at the NCAA Southeast Golf Regional at the Capital City Golf Club’s Crabapple Course. Clemson holds a three shot lead over Oklahoma State after a weather-impacted second round on Friday.

The fourth-seeded Tigers shot a 2-under 278 on the par 70, 7,182-yard layout about 20 miles outside of Atlanta. Top-seeded Oklahoma State shot a 2-over 282 to fall from a shot up to three behind. They are followed by regional host and ACC champion Georgia Tech, which sits at 13-over after shooting a 6-over 286 on Friday.

The 54-hole Southeast Regional concludes with the final 18 holes on Saturday with a scheduled start time of 7:30 a.m. Today’s round was delayed 1:20 minutes prior to the start and a two-hour delay took place from 3:04 p.m. to 5:04 p.m.
