Wofford Men’s Golf Claims Fourth at River Landing Intercollegiate

 

WALLACE, N.C. ? The Wofford men’s golf team finished fourth at the 2010 ECU/UNCW River Landing Intercollegiate, led by two Terriers who finished in the top ten individually.

 

Sophomore Ben Wright paced the Terriers, turning in a five-under par performance and tying for fourth place individually with a final score of 211 (70-69-72).

 

Senior Garrett Medeiros also finished in the top 10 for the Terriers, carding a two-under par score of 213 (72-71-70). Fellow senior Mike McKenzie placed in the top twenty five individuals by recording a score of 217 (70-74-73) over three rounds.

 

Sophomore Zach Capps provided the fourth score for the Terriers, carding a 221 (72-74-75) in the tournament.

 

As a team, Wofford placed fourth with a team score of  861 (284-287-290) on the par-71, 6,900 yard River Landing Country Club course. The tournament was co-hosted by UNC Wilmington and East Carolina, who finished first and third respectively.

 

The Terriers will take the course again April 12-13 as they host the 2010 Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

 

 

 

Zabroske and Eagles Claim Sixth in Augusta

 

AUGUSTA, Ga. - In its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championship, the Georgia Southern golf team claimed its third Top 10 finish of the spring campaign placing sixth at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational. The Eagles shot an even-par 288 on the final round for a 54-hole total 851 (-13), their second-lowest 54-hole loop of the season and best of the spring.

 

Ryan Zabroske, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., tied for sixth position at the par 72, 7,161-yard Forest Hills tract. The senior tied his career-low round of 67 in the second round and followed it with a 4-under 68 to close the tournament. Zabroske calculated a 9-under 207 tournament frame using rounds of 72-67-68. The Eagle finished six strokes out of individual medalist Henrik Norlander of Augusta State.

 

“We are all pleased we got a good finish this week,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We didn’t get four good scores today, but the course played a little harder with tougher pin placements as to be expected. Ryan [Zabroske] had an excellent tournament this weekend and really challenged for the individual finish which was a team goal entering the weekend. Matt [Deal] posted another good round and I was proud of him with his effort this weekend as well.”

 

Host Augusta State continued to dominate the tournament carding a 15-under 273 final round for a 47-under 817 three-day total to claim its 13th tournament title with a 16-shot edge over second-place South Carolina (833). Duke claimed third with an 8-under 280 final round for an 843 (-21) tournament total, while Clemson preserved fourth at 845. Tennessee, who began in third, slipped two slots back finishing fifth with an 846.

 

Georgia Southern bounced back-and-forth with Tennessee for a top five finish through the final holes and was tied for fifth when they concluded the round. But the Volunteers finished strong shooting 5-under over the final three holes to claim a five-stroke advantage over the Eagles.

 

Zabroske teed off his final round with a birdie on the first hole and closed out the front nine with an eagle on nine to take the turn at 3-under. He bogeyed hole 12, but rounded out the back nine with two birdies over the final four holes. Combining his 3-under front nine with a 1-under back nine, Zabroske vaulted eight spots on the leaderboard to record his fourth Top 10 finish of the season tying for sixth at 9-under.

 

Junior Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) posted his best 54-hole total of the season with a 214 (-2). Monte launched two eagles over the final 18 holes, coming on No. 6 and 17. Standing even after the front nine, Monte continued to level his slate through the back nine erasing a bogey on No. 11 with a birdie two holes later. Two bogeys over the next three holes vanished with his eagle on No. 17, but a double bogey to close the round left the junior at 2-over for the afternoon. Monte used two rounds in the red and his final round 74 to finish tied for 28th at 214.

 

Saving his best tournament tally for his final regular season contest, Statesboro, Ga., native Matt Deal posted a 217 (+1) to mark a career-low. After carding a career-low 18 in the second round, Deal fired his second-best round on the final 18. The senior posted an even slate on the front nine and maintained the slate with a birdie and bogey to open the back nine. But a birdie on No. 15 moved the senior to 1-under as he closed the round with pars on the final three holes to finish in a tie for 40th.

 

One stroke back, fellow senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) carded a 3-over 75 to finish tied for 47th. Rounding out the five-man lineup, redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) struggled on the final day posting an 81 to place tied for 76th.  

 

“Overall, we took a big step forward playing three solid rounds this weekend,” stated Mays. “This was a regional style field and I was happy to see the team apply what we worked on in practice and beat some top quality programs. This certainly gives us added confidence heading into the conference tournament. Now we just need to continue to work hard over the next couple weeks and bring a strong game to Florence.”

 

Georgia Southern closed out regular season play in Augusta and will prepare over the next two weeks for the Southern Conference Tournament to take place April 18-20 in Florence, S.C. The tournament will be held at The Country Club of South Carolina.

 

 

 

Chattanooga Jumps Three Spots Finishing Eighth in Augusta

Derek Rende fired a five-under par 67 to tie Stephan Jaeger for team-low honors

 

AUGUSTA, Ga. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team shot four-under par (284) today to end up in eighth-place at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club.  The sub-par round pushed Chattanooga past No. 16 Alabama, SoCon rival UNC Greensboro and USC-Aiken.

 

Augusta State won its event shooting 47-under par, 817.  No. 17 South Carolina finished second at 833 (-31), while Duke rounded out the top three at 843 (-21).

 

Derek Rende carded five birdies and an eagle en route to a five-under par 67 and a 54-hole total of 210 (-6).  He moved from a tie for 33rd to start the day into a tie for 14th.

 

Also tied for 14th was Stephan Jaeger.  Jaeger’s final round 72 (E) gave the sophomore a 210 (-6) as well.  Jaeger and Rende each turned in par or better cards in all three rounds.

 

J.T. Clendenin (73) and Steven Fox (72) rounded out today’s team scoring for the Mocs.  Clendenin’s 218 (+2) placed him tied for 47th, while Fox ended up tied for 62nd at 221 (+5).

 

Fredrik Qvicker tied for 89th at 229 after counting his first two rounds.  Alex Ratliff played as an individual winding up tied for 76th at 225.

 

Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander fired a 65 (-7) to claim medalist honors at 15-under par, 201.  Teammate Patrick Reed, the second round leader, came in second at 203 (-13), while a trio of golfers tied for third at 10-under.

 

The Mocs hit the championship run in their schedule heading to Florence, S.C., April 18-20, for the Southern Conference Championship.  Chattanooga is the three-time defending champion as the event returns to the Country Club of South Carolina.

UNCG finishes ninth at Administaff Augusta State Invitational after Bowman’s final round 71

 

AUGUSTA, Ga.  ? Will Bowman shot a final round 71 to finish at 208 and tie for ninth place to lead UNC Greensboro to a ninth place finish at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational men’s golf tournament on Sunday afternoon.

 

Bowman’s 54-hole total of 208 wound up tied for the third-best score in school history. Bowman had four birdies and three bogeys in his round, going out in 36 and coming back in with a 35. He finished the tournament at eight-under par on the strength of his career-low 66 on Saturday afternoon.

 

Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander won the event at 15-under par after a final round 65 on Sunday. He bettered his teammate Patrick Reed by two shots, who held the lead entering Sunday’s final round. South Carolina’s George Bryan, who carded a 65 of his own on Saturday, finished in a three-way tie for third with Augusta State’s Mitch Krywulycz and South Carolina’s Paul Woodbury.

 

Tournament host Augusta State also won the team title with a score of 817. After South Carolina pulled close with an unbelievable second round 266 on Saturday, Augusta State pulled away with a 273 on Sunday to win the tournament by 16 shots. UNCG carded a final round 295 to finish in ninth place. The Spartans wound up at 859 for the tournament.

 

In all 54 team rounds during the tournament, 52 of those were scores recorded under 300. The 18-team tournament field featured 11 teams ranked in the Top 50 according to Golfstat.

Charlotte Wins Irish Creek Collegiate; Davidson 11th

 

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Charlotte shot a final-round low 280 to win the Irish Creek Collegiate Golf Classic, hosted by the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission at The Club at Irish Creek. Corey Nagy led the 49ers with a final-round 67 to take the individual medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Olafur Loftsson. Davidson placed 11th with a three-round score of 897.

 

Charlotte (284+278+280=842) took the team title on the par-71, 7099-yard, Davis Love III designed course by 11 strokes over second-place finishers Ohio State (282+286+285=853). Nagy (70+70+67) finished at six-under par, after a four-under par final round.

 

Davidson (297+296+304=897) finished one-stroke behind Richmond (201+296+299=896) in 11th place, just ahead of the lone Southern Conference team in the tournament, Elon (306+298+295=899, 12th place.)

 

Junior captain Bobby Urso (67+73+77=217), who shot a career-best 67 in the first round, led Davidson individually by tying for 15th-place. Sophomore Jackson Taylor was Davidson's top performer on the final day, shooting a three-over par 74 to total 218 and place in a tie for 19th place.

 

John Skeadas III (79+74+76=229) and Christopher Rollins (78+78+77=233) rounded out the 'Cats scoring group.

 

The Irish Creek Collegiate served as the final regular season tournament of the season for the Wildcats, as they will next compete in the Southern Conference Championship. The SoCon Championship will return to the Country Club of South Carolina Apr. 18-20 for the fourth consecutive year. Davidson started the 2009 fall season on the same course and will be looking to improve on last season's seventh-place finish.

Judy Shoots a 69 on Final Day of Irish Creek Collegiate

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Jayson Judy fired a team-best 69 over his final 18 holes of the Irish Creek Collegiate tournament and finished in a tie for 21st while the Elon Phoenix posted a three-round final tally of 899 (306-298-295) to place 12th in the 13-team field.  Charlotte took home the team title with a score of 842 (287-278-280).
 
Judy's round of 69, the best of the weekend for any of the five Phoenix golfers, came on the heels of rounds of 74 and 76 on Saturday to give him a three-round total score of 219.
 
Stephen Dressel's 226 (76-75-75) put him in a tie for 46th in the field of 75.  Phil Bartholomew was two strokes back at 228 (80-70-78) to tie for 51st.  Scott Hockemeyer carded a final round 73 after rounds of 79 and 78 on Saturday to place in a tie for 54th at 230.  Mike Fekete rounded out the Phoenix participants with a score of 237 (77-77-83) to place in a tie for 60th.
 
Charlotte won the event by 11 strokes over Ohio State (282-286-285--853).  Kennesaw State (287-283-291--861), Mercer (281-291-291--863) and Marquette (287-289-292--868) finished off the top-five.  
 
Davidson, the only other Southern Conference team in the event, finished two strokes ahead of the Phoenix at 897 (297-296-304).
 
Elon will play its final event prior to the 2010 Southern Conference Championship when the Phoenix plays in the Wofford Invitational on April 12-13.
