Furman Widens Advantage at SoCon Men?s Golf Championship

Furman’s Reeves and Ferrell Lead Field at -7

FLORENCE, S.C. ? Furman fired the lowest round for the second straight day, carding a nine-under par 279, to extend its lead to 11 strokes after two rounds at the 2010 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina.

 

A pair of Paladins, Austin Reeves and Garland Ferrell, vaulted into the lead with a two round score of 137 (-7) at the par 72, 7,062-yard course. Reeves carded the lowest score of the day at 66, highlighted by a bogey-free effort to go along with six birdies. Ferrell also had six birdies in his round, accompanied by a pair of bogies, to shoot 68.

 

UNC Greensboro recorded the second-lowest round of the day at 280 to move solely into second place, 11 shots off of Furman’s pace. For the Spartans, four of its five golfers scored par or better on the day, led by Ryan Heisey’s 67 and Colin Chapman’s 69. Heisey sits in third place overall with teammates Will Bowman and Robert Hoadley tied for ninth (144).

 

Georgia Southern is in third place following a round of two-under par 286. Joe Monte and Spencer Fulford are knotted in the ninth slot at 144 to lead the Eagles.

 

Elon sits in fourth position followed by Western Carolina and College of Charleston, which are tied for fifth. The Cougars made the biggest jump on day two, leaping three spots from eighth to fifth.

 

Chattanooga is in seventh while Wofford is eighth and Appalachian State ninth. Davidson and Samford are tied for the 10th spot.

 

The final round of the championship will begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. ET with results updated every three holes at www.golfstatresults.com. The team and individual winner each earns automatic qualification to the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals.
