Teams Conclude Regular Season at Wofford Invitational

ETSU Claims 22nd Annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational Title

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? ETSU lead wire to wire to claim the 22nd annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational title, hosted by Wofford College at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

 

The Buccaneers recorded a team score of 847 over three rounds of play, using the strength of a 277 score in the second round to finish at 17 under par.

 

Michael Stewart of ETSU took the individual title with a seven-under par performance. Stewart recorded 16 birdies and a tournament-low score of 66 in the second round to finish with a score of 209 (72-66-71). Fellow Buccaneer Seamus Power tied for second place with a score of 210, matching the performance of Charleston Southern’s Jacobo Pastor to finish six under.

 

Tournament host Wofford claimed third with a team score of 863 (287-287-289), finishing one under par.

 

Freshman Mark Joye led the Terriers, tying for fourth individually and carding a five-under 211 (71-70-70) for his best performance of the spring season. Senior Garrett Medeiros tied for 18th with a score of 218 (70-75-73) and sophomore Zach Capps carded a three-round score of 219 (75-71-73) to tie for 21st place individually.

 

Freshman Charles Moore also finished in the top 25 playing as an individual with a score of 220 (76-70-74). Senior Mike McKenzie turned in a score of 221 for the Terriers and sophomore Ben Wright finished the tournament with a score of 228. Senior Kirk Whitehead, also playing as an individual, tied for 29th and carded a 221 over three rounds.

 

The Terriers will take the course again April 18-20 at the 2010 Southern Conference Championship in Florence, S.C.

 

 

 

Johnson Leads Men’s Golf at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University men’s golf improved two strokes from Monday’s late round to finish with a 296-303-301=900 (+34), good for 13th place at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

 

East Tennessee State’s Michael Stewart held onto his first-day lead to claim the individual title at 72-66-71=209 (-7) and lead the Bucs to the team title at 285-277-285=847 (-17).

 

Senior Casey Johnson paced the Mountaineers with a 71-74-74=219 (+3), tying him for 21st place. Lance Wheeler finished second for ASU at 76-74-73=223 (+7), 39th overall.

 

Dustin Hudson placed 62nd with a 77-78-75=230 (+14) three-round score while Jake Wiesehan was right behind at 72-79-81=232 (+16) in 64th place.

 

Jacob Eggers carded a 78-77-79=234 (+18) to finishin a tie for 69th place. Competing individually, Josh Nichols also tied for 64th at 80-75-77=232 (+16).

 

Host Wofford finished in third place at 863 (-1), while Elon placed fifth at 872 (+8) and Samford was ninth at 887 (+23).

 

The Mountaineers head to the Southern Conference Tournament next weekend (April 18-20) at Florence’s Country Club of South Carolina.

 

 

 

Phoenix Men Place Fifth at Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Elon Phoenix fired a team-best round of 288 during Tuesday's final round of the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational to finish in fifth place among the 13 participating teams.  Elon finished with a three-round total of 872 (291-293-288).  East Tennessee State claimed the team title, shooting 847 (285-277-285) over the two days.
 
Jayson Judy and Scott Hockemeyer finished in a tie for ninth place in the field of 75 golfers.  Judy went three-under with a 69 in his final round on his way to a 216 (73-74-69).  Hockemeyer also finished a 216 (71-72-73) to pace the Phoenix.
 
Stephen Dressel and Mike Fekete also finished in a tie.  The duo placed in a tie for 29th at 221.  Dressel went 75-72-74 while Fekete went 72-77-72.
 
Phil Bartholomew rounded out Elon's scoring entries, placing in a tie for 56th with a 228 (79-75-74).
 
Miller Robins competed as an individual and placed in a tie for 69th with a 234 (76-80-78).
 
ETSU's Michael Stewart took home the individual title, firing a 209 (72-66-71) over his three rounds.
 
ETSU cruised to the team title by 15 strokes over USC Upstate.  USC Upstate finished at 862 (292-284-286).
 
The Phoenix finished ahead of Southern Conference rivals Samford (6th; 292-287-308--887) and Appalachian State (13th; 296-303-301--900).
 
Elon will next compete at the SoCon Championships beginning Sunday in Florence, S.C.

 

 

 

SAMFORD MEN’S GOLF FINISHES NINTH AT 2010 COCA-COLA WOFFORD INVITATIONAL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men’s golf team placed ninth at the 22nd Annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Tuesday as the Bulldogs closed out the two-day competition with a final round score of 308. Samford’s Martin Bunt paced the team with a 54-hole score of 221 as he earned a 29th-place finish.

 

Samford entered its final round as the sixth-place team in the tournament’s 13-team field, but turned in its worst 18-hole performance of the competition Tuesday. After the Bulldogs fired a team-best round of 287 on Monday, Samford finished with a lackluster 308 on Tuesday.

Stewart recorded 16 birdies and a tournament-low score of 66 in the second round to finish with a score of 209 (72-66-71). Fellow Buccaneer Seamus Power tied for second place with a score of 210, matching the performance of Charleston Southern’s Jacobo Pastor to also finish 6-under par.

 

Samford’s Bunt led the team with a three-round score of 221, while true freshmen Casey O’Toole and Bill Nabors both finished just one stroke behind at 222. O’Toole, the Bulldogs’ native of Oneonta, Ala., turned in the team’s best round Tuesday with a 3-over-par 75.

 

Drew Aimone and Gabe Hyde, two more of Samford’s talented true freshmen, also turned in solid scores Tuesday. Aimone, the Bulldogs’ native of Savannah, Ga., carded a third-round score of 77 on Tuesday and closed out the tournament with a 54-hole tally of 223. Hyde registered a 78 in his final round and concluded the two-day competition with a 232.

 

The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action April 18-20 as the Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in the all-important 2010 Southern Conference Championships to be held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
