ETSU Leads After Two Rounds at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational
Terriers in third after day one
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? ETSU carded an 11-under par 277 in round two to maintain a two-round lead at the 2010 Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday.
The Bucs recorded a first round score of 285 to lead after the first 18 holes before shooting a score of 277 in the second round to finish with a score of 562, seven strokes ahead of second-place Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern shot a low score of 276 in the second round to move into second place with a team score of 569 (293-276, -7).
ETSU also claimed the top two individual spots, with Michael Stewart carding a two-round score of 138 (72-66, -6) and Seamus Power recording a score of 139 (68-71, -5).
The Terriers hold third place after two rounds of play, recording a score of 287 each round for a two-under par total of 574. Freshman Mark Joye paced Wofford with a two-round score of 141 (71-70) to tie for third individually, leading four Terriers currently in the top-twenty five. Sophomore Ben Wright is tied for 21st after carding a 145 (71-74) in the first two rounds, along with senior Garrett Medeiros, who recorded a two-round score of 145 (70-75).
Sophomore Zach Capps and freshman Charles Moore, playing as an individual, each shot a two-over 146 on day one of the tournament to tie for 25th.
The third and final round of the Wofford Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13 at the par-72, 6,648 yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
Elon in Middle of Pack at Wofford Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- After playing 36 holes on day one of the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, the Elon Phoenix men's golf team sits in the middle of the pack. Elon followed up a first round 291 with a 293 for a score of 584 to sit in seventh place at the 13-team event. East Tennessee State leads the field with a two-round total of 562 (285-277).
Scott Hockemeyer went one-under par on his first round before shooting an even-par 72 on his final 18 holes. Hockemeyer's 143 has him in a tie for 11th after day one.
Jayson Judy (73-74) and Stephen Dressel (75-72) both finished at 147 after two rounds to tie for 29th. Dressel posted 11 birdies during his 36 holes, the third-highest total in the field of 75 golfers.
Mike Fekete went even-par on his first 18 holes before going five-over on his final 18 to sit at 149 (72-77) and in a tie for 42nd. Phil Bartholomew's 154 (79-75) has him in a tie for 65th.
Miller Robins is in a tie for 71st. Robins, competing as an individual, shot a 156 (76-80) on day one.
East Tennessee State's Michael Stewart went six-under at 138 (72-66) to hold a one-stroke advantage over his teammate Seamus Power (68-71--139) for the individual lead.
ETSU's overall lead is seven shots over Charleston Southern (293-276--569). Host Wofford sits third with a 574 (287-287) with USC Upstate (292-295--576) and Stetson (288-290--578) rounding out the top five spots.
Southern Conference foe Samford is sixth with a two-round score of 579 (292-287). The Phoenix holds a one-shot edge on High Point (295-290--585) entering Tuesday's final round of play.
Men's Golf Stands 13th After 36 Holes at Wofford
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Casey Johnson fired a first-round 71 and finished Monday's 36 holes at 71-74=145 (+1) to lead Appalachian State University men's golf at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational. Johnson stands tied for 21st and the Mountaineers are in 13th place at 296-303=599 (+23) heading into Tuesday's final round.
Lance Wheeler is five strokes back at 76-74=150 (+6) in 46th place while Jake Wiesehan carded a 72-79=151 (+7), good for 51st at the event.
Jacob Eggers and Dustin Huddon each shot 155 (+11) to tie for 68th place through the first day's action.
Competing as an individual, Josh Nichols improved from the first round to the second at 80-75=155 (+11), tying with Eggers and Hudson.
East Tennessee State leads the event at 14-under (285-277=562), paced by individual leader Michael Stewart's 72-66=138 (-6).
Also competing from the Southern Conference, host Wofford stands in third place (574), Samford is sixth (579) and Elon ranks seventh (584).
Tuesday's final round begins at 9:15 a.m. at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina.
