WCU, which had a short week that involved travel returning from tournament play in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the road trip to Kentucky, will now focus on the 74th-Annual Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship that will begin this weekend at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
Tied for third after the opening two rounds, Murray State rallied to win the team championship by one stroke over the two-way tie between Memphis and Auburn in the runner-up position. Miami (OH), which led the first two rounds, was relegated to fourth with a one-over, 853 as a team, with the host Kentucky Wildcats rounding out the top five with a two-over, 854.
Auburn’s John Stembridge (206), who entered the final round tied for the overall lead after shooting a six-under, 65, on the second 18 holes, fired a one-under 70 to complement his par-71 in the opening round to win the individual medalist honors by a stroke over Jonathan Fly (207) from Memphis. Fly, who was tied for sixth entering the second day, shot two-under 69 and three-under 68 to rally to the runner-up position, just one-stroke in arrears of Stembridge.
Cameron Carrico of the team-champion Racers and Kentucky’s Brian Belden finished tied for third at four-under, 209, with Jack Hiluta of South Alabama and Murray State’s Nick Newcomb tying for fifth after shooting three-under, 210, over the three-round event.

Action from the 2010 SoCon Championships will get underway with the practice round on Saturday, April 17, with the 54-hole event spread over Sunday, April 18 through Tuesday, April 20. The Catamounts will look to build upon last year’s third-place finish at the event, the program’s second-consecutive such finish at the conference finale. The SoCon team champion will receive the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.
