Chattanooga Men’s Golf Leads Heading into Final Round
Stephan Jaeger (-2), Steven Fox (-1) and Derek Rende (E) all in top 10 through 36 holes
AIKEN, S.C. --- The trio of Stephan Jaeger (3rd), Steven Fox (T4th) and Derek Rende (T7th) led the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team into first place at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club. The threesome combined to shoot three-under par over the 36 holes played Monday.
Chattanooga stands at two-over par 562, four shots ahead of Liberty. Southern Conference rival Furman is in third at 569, while No. 19 Clemson is nine shots back at 571 and No. 20 Virginia in fifth 11 shots behind with a 573.
UVa’s Ben Kobles is the individual leader at seven-under par 133. His second round 63 set a new tournament record. Liberty’s Max McKay is second at four-under 136, while Jaeger is alone in third after twin rounds of 69 put him at 138.
The Mocs opened the day with a five-over par round of 285. Jaeger shot 69 (-1) to lead the charge and tie for the individual lead with six other golfer. Rende was one shot back at even-par 70, tied for seventh.
Fox and Fredrick Qvicker each shot 73 (+3), while J.T. Clendenin rounded out the first round scores with an 80.
Chattanooga turned it up in round two with the low round of the day, 277 (-3). The 277 is the Mocs’ best round of 2009-10
Fox was outstanding with a season-low 66 (-4), while Jaeger and Rende matched their opening rounds at 69 and 70, respectively. Qvicker carded a 72 (+2), while Clendenin’s drop score of 74 would’ve counted on every team except Virginia.
Overall, Fox is tied with two others at one-under par 139. Rende is tied for seventh with a trio of golfers at 140 (E). Fox’s nine birdies on the day are second only to Kobles’ 11. The Mocs played 140 holes at par or better on the day.
Clendenin will lead the team off the tee Tuesday morning at 10:20 a.m. The Mocs will play with Liberty and Furman.

Ferrell Guides Furman Into Third Place After Two Rounds At Palmetto Intercollegiate
Aiken, S.C. -- Senior Garland Ferrell fired back-to-back rounds of 70 to help the Furman men’s golf team into sole possession of third place after two rounds at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club on Monday.
Farrell, a Greenville, S.C., native, is in a tie for seventh place at even-par while fellow senior Daniel Bowden (69-72=141), who carded a first round 69, is tied for 11th after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Junior Austin Reeves (72-71=143) is in 16th and Jack Ulrich (70-75=145) holds a share of 23rd place.
The Paladins, who led by two strokes after the morning round, are seven strokes behind tournament leaders Chattanooga and three strokes behind second place Liberty University. Furman holds a two-stroke advantage on fourth place Clemson and four-stroke edge on fifth place Virginia.
The Cavaliers’ Ben Kohles (70-63=133) holds the individual lead on the strength of a second round 63 on Monday afternoon.
Final round action is set for Tuesday morning.

Eagles in Sixth After Two Rounds at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
Ryan Zabroske and Joe Monte pace the Eagles in a tie for 11th.
AIKEN, S.C. ? Led by Joe Monte and Ryan Zabroske, Georgia Southern trimmed its first round score by six strokes to stand in sixth place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday (March 8). Five Eagles combined for first and second round scores of 291 and 285 for a team 576 two-round tally on the historic par 70, 6,565-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
“It was a beautiful day today, the best we’ve had all spring,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We played well and finished strong with two guys under par. We’re still trying to get our third and fourth scores a little lower, but I’m proud of the team for hanging in there today.”
Chattanooga slid into first place slicing eight strokes from its opening round score for a team 562 total and bests Liberty in second by four strokes. Furman stands in third with a 569 (281-288), while Clemson carded a 571 through two rounds to stand in fourth heading into the final round to take place on Tuesday, March 9. Virginia rounds out the top 5 at 13-over (573).
Senior Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) and junior Monte (Chantilly, Va.) matched identical rounds of 72s and 69s on the first day. Both carded 141s on the opening day and stand in a tie for 11th place at 1-over par.
Monte and Zabroske highlighted their rounds with eagles on the par 5,
518 yard 10th hole. Monte also was one of the top individuals on the day launching eight birdies over the first 36 holes.
Meanwhile, Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) and Matt Deal (Statesboro,
Ga.) flip-flopped rounds of 73s and 74s to card matching 147s through two rounds. Both Eagles stand in a tie for 32nd.
Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) rounded out Georgia Southern’s lineup owning a 153 on the opening day with rounds of 76 and 77, respectively. Fulford stands in a 59th-place tie entering the final round.
“If we have a solid round tomorrow and play smart golf, we will have a successful tournament and post a strong finish,” stated Mays. “We are looking forward to the final round tomorrow and having the chance to finish with a good round.”
The third and final round of the 54-hole 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9.

SAMFORD MEN’S GOLF: O’TOOLE JUMPS INTO SECOND PLACE; ?DOGS’ SIXTH AT SAMFORD INVITATIONAL
--- The Bulldogs’ true freshman O’Toole fires a second-round score of 65 to move into second place ---
ONEONTA, Ala. --- The Samford men’s golf team turned in a 36-hole score of 595 (298-297) on Monday to finish the opening day of competition in sixth place at the 2010 Samford Invitational being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club. True freshman Casey O’Toole fired a team-best round of 7-under-par 65 en route to a second-place performance with a two-round score of 138 (73-65).
Following O’Toole’s second-place outing, Samford’s Gabe Hyde followed with a 24th-place performance for the Bulldogs. Hyde, who is also a true freshman, proved to be consistent in both of his rounds Monday and turned in a 36-hole score of 149 (75-74).
Junior Martin Bunt tallied Samford’s third best score of the day with a two-round total of 156 (75-81). Last season, the Bulldogs’ native of Pensacola, Fla., finished the Samford Invitational tied for ninth place. Freshman Drew Aimone also tallied a mark of 156 (75-81), while Bill Nabors rounded out the scoring with a 36-hole total of 159 (82-77).
Vanderbilt and Kennesaw State concluded the opening day of the 2010 Samford Invitational tied for first place in the 14-team field. Both teams tallied identical 36-hole scores of 575, while Murray State moved into third place with a two-round score of 586 (293-293).
Kennesaw State’s Jeff Karlsson carded a two-round total of 5-under-par 137 to claim sole possession of first place Monday. Karlsson leads Samford’s O’Toole by one stroke, while Kennesaw State’s J.P. Putnam and Vanderbilt’s Trey DelGreco came in tied for third place at 141.
The Samford men’s golf team will resume play in the 2010 Samford Invitational on Tuesday at 9 a.m. (CST) as the 14-team tournament will begin with a shotgun start at the Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala.
Elon 14th Following Two Rounds Of Palmetto Intercollegiate
AIKEN, S.C. -- With two rounds of the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in the books on Monday, the Elon Phoenix men's golf program sits in 14th place following rounds of 303 and 297 for a total score of 600. Southern Conference rival Chattanooga leads the field with a 562 (285-277). The third and final round will be played on Tuesday.
Stephen Dressel, who sits in a 23rd-place tie after day one, fired a first round 69 before carding a 76 during the day's second round for a total score of 145. Mike Fekete is four strokes back with a two-round 149 (73-76). Fekete sits in a tie for 44th.
After a 79 in round one, Jayson Judy shot an even par 72 in round two on his way to a score of 151. He is tied for 53rd. Phil Bartholomew's 156 (83-73) has him in a tie for 72nd with a round to play. Scott Hockemeyer rounds out Elon's field. He is in a tie for 83rd following a two-round tally of 161 (82-79).
Virginia's Beh Kohles sits at -7 through two rounds with a score of 133 (70-63) to lead the 90-golfer field.
Chattanooga leads Liberty (283-283--566) by four strokes and Furman (281-288--569) by seven strokes. Clemson (288-283--571) and Virginia (294-279--573) round out the top-five.
The Phoenix is just two strokes behind both Winthrop (300-298--598) and Akron (301-297--598) for 12th place.
Elon leads Presbyterian (310-291--601), Wofford (297-307--604), College of Charleston (314-296--610) and Francis Marion (313-309--622).
