UNCG wins Fireline Towson Invitational men’s golf tournament

 

GRASONVILLE, Md. ? Finishing the 54 holes with a team score of just two-over par 866, UNC Greensboro earned its second tournament win of the year, claiming the Fireline Towson Invitational men’s golf tournament Sunday afternoon at Prosepct Bay CC.

 

It was the first time since 1997-98 that the Spartans have won two tournaments in the same season. Earlier this season, the Spartans won the Georgetown Intercollegiate. Prior to the win at Georgetown, UNCG hadn’t recorded a tourney win since October 2006.

 

All five UNCG golfers finished in the Top 12 individually. Ryan Heisey finished tied for third at even-par 216 after shooting a final round 73.

 

Colin Chapman was tied for sixth place after a final round 72 put him at 219 for the tournament. Robert Hoadley and Will Bowman finished tied for ninth place, each carding 220 for the tourney. Will Almand had the best round of the day on Sunday for the Spartans, shooting a final round 70 for a tournament total of 221.

 

Kent State’s Mackenzie Hughes won the tournament after shooting a final round 66, the low score of the day. That put Hughes at 213, one shot better than Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume and two shots ahead of Heisey and Mitch Gray of Campbell.

 

UNCG’s team score of 866 was six shots better than Kent State and 28 strokes ahead of third-place Campbell.

 

The Spartans return to action Saturday when they travel to Augusta, Ga. for the Administaff ASU Invitational.

Furman's Reeves Grabs Fourth Place, Paladins Sixth At Linger Longer Invitational

 

Greensboro, Ga. -- Furman junior and Greenville, S.C., native Austin Reeves (71-74-71=216) claimed a share of fourth place with a final round one-under 71 while helping Furman to a sixth place finish on Sunday at the Linger Longer Invitational at the par-72 Reynolds Landing Tradition Course in Greensboro, Ga..

 

Reeves got out of the gates fast recording birdies on five of his first six holes and fired a four-under 32 on the front nine to finish at even-par for the tournament.  He finished 12 strokes behind individual medalist Bud Cauley (64-73-67=204) of Arkansas.  Kevin Tway (73-70-67=210) and Sean Einhaus (70-70-74=214) of Oklahoma State finished second and third, respectively.

 

Tway and Einhaus guided the Cowboys of Oklahoma State (293-286-286=865) to a two-stroke victory over Alabama.  Texas A&M, Georgia and Georgia Tech rounded out the top five ahead of sixth place Furman.  The 16-team field included six top 25 teams and eight top 50 teams.

 

Furman also got strong third round performances from Daniel Bowden (75-75-72=222), who carded an even-par 72, and fellow senior Garland Ferrell (73-79-74=226) who posted a two-over 74 on Sunday.  Bowden and Anthony Aloi (74-71-77=222) shared 22nd place at six over par.

 

Furman will take a couple of weeks off before competing for the Southern Conference championship April 18-20, at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.

CofC 15th at Hootie at Bulls Bay

 

Awendaw, S.C. ? The College of Charleston, led by Tim Mitchell (Austin, Texas) who fired a 76 to tie for 42nd, shot a 314 in 18 holes to sit 15th after the first round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate being held Mar. 28-30 at the Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.  The Cougars sit 14 strokes out of the top 10, with #29 LSU leading the tournament with a 288.  #31 Duke and #34 Wake Forest are just a stroke back in second place.

 

12 out of the 15 teams competing are ranked in the top 50 in the nation at the par 71, 7,298-yard course, according to Golfstat.

 

N.C. State’s Matt Hill leads for medalist honors with a three-under 68.  Travis Wadkins of Wake Forest and LSU’s Sang Yi are tied for second with a 69 each.

 

Mitchell posted two birdies and five pars en route to his 76 and tie for 42nd, while John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) shot three birdies and six pars to card a 79 and a tie for 59th.  Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas) tied for 59th as well with a 79 after firing six pars on the day.

 

Harrison Moore (Orangeburg, S.C.) had one birdie, coming at the par-five hole 10, and seven par shots to shot an 80 and sit tied for 67th.  Michael Montgomery (Hilton Head, S.C.) finished 74th with an 83.  He carded a two on the par-three hole 12 for his only birdie of the day.

 

The Cougars tee off from hole 10 beginning at 9:50 a.m., Monday in second round action.

Chattanooga in 10th after First Round at the Hootie at Bulls Bay

Stephan Jaeger and Steven Fox each shot 74 to lead today’s effort

 

AWENDAW, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team is in 10th-place after 18 holes of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay Golf Club (Par 71).  Chattanooga scored 300 in the opening round and is one shot behind Kentucky in ninth at 299.

 

LSU is atop the leaderboard after a four-under par 288.  Duke is one shot back in second at 289 (+5), while Wake Forest stands in third at 290.

 

Stephan Jaeger and Steven Fox carded matching 74s (+3) to lead the Mocs.  The duo is tied for 26th.  Fredrik Qvicker is one shot behind at 75 (+3) which puts him tied for 32nd.

 

Derek Rende rounded out the team scoring for the Mocs with a six-over par 77.  J.T. Clendenin’s 84 served as the drop score.  Rende is tied for 48th, while Clendenin stands in 75th.

 

N.C. State’s Matt Hill, the defending NCAA Champion, opened with a three-under par 68 to lead Travis Wadkins (Wake Forest) and Sang Yi (LSU) by one shot after their 69s (-2).  A trio of golfers is in third another stroke back at one-under (70).

 

The Mocs start tomorrow’s at 9 a.m.  Chattanooga will be led off No. 10 by J.T. Clendenin.  UTC is paired with ETSU and No. 10 Augusta State.
