Chattanooga, Steven Fox Lead Furman Intercollegiate After Two Rounds
Greenville, S.C. -- Chattanooga’s Steven Fox fired a four-under par 68 to grab sole possession of first place and help the Mocs into a three-stroke lead over Clemson after two rounds at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course on Saturday.
Fox (70-68=138) birdied six holes, including four in a row, to guide Chattanooga (289-291=580) to a three-over 291. The Mocs lead second place Clemson (289-294=583) by three strokes and hold an 11-stroke advantage over third place Old Dominion (293-298=591) entering Sunday’s final round.
Furman (305-290=595) recorded the best team score of the round with a two-over 290 to climb from 14th place into fourth. Defending tournament champion Austin Reeves (76-68=144) played a bogey free round to card a 68 and move into fifth place while Garland Ferrell (78-73=151) posted a one-over 73 and Daniel Bowden matched his first round performance with a 74.
Sunday’s final round action begins at 8 a.m. with teams teeing off of both No. 1 and No. 10. The Paladins, playing with Western Carolina and Presbyterian, tee-off on the front nine beginning at noon. The final pairing of Chattanooga, Clemson and Old Dominion tees off at 1 p.m. on the front nine.

Fox, Mocs Lead Heading in Final Round at Furman Intercollegiate
True freshman Steven Fox in first as he leads Mocs to three-stroke lead overall
GREENVILLE, S.C. --- True freshman Steven Fox moved into first-place individually while carrying the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team into the same position at the Furman Intercollegiate. Fox’s four-under par 68 powered Chattanooga to a three-shot lead.
The Mocs hold that three-shot advantage over No. 18 Clemson. UTC stands at 580 (+4), while the Tigers lurk at 583 (+7). Old Dominion is in third at 591 (+15), 11 shots back after shooting 298 today.
With both teams entering the round tied in first and beginning on the tougher back nine, Clemson got the better of the Mocs by three shots over holes 10-18 turning at two-over, while UTC shot plus-five.
Chattanooga was able to make big strides over holes one through six again today shooting nine-under par for those holes, but seven, eight and nine took a toll. The counters shot seven-over for those three to finish their day at 291 (+3). The Tigers shot four-over for its second nine including plus-six over the final three.
Fox is in first overall at six-under par 138 after rounds of 70 and 68. It is the first time he recorded back-to-back sub-par rounds as a collegian. Today saw Fox card six birdies and just two bogeys.
Stephan Jaeger’s 73 puts him tied for sixth at one-over par 145. Derek Rende is just one shot back tied for eighth at 146 (+2) after a 77 today. J.T. Clendenin bounced back from a tough first day with a 73 (+1) and is tied for 53rd at 153 (+9), while Fredrik Qvicker is tied 69th at 155 (+11).
Fox leads by two shots over Presbyterian’s Adam Black whose level par 72 keeps him in second-place, where he was after 18 holes, two shots back at 140 (-4). Clemson’s Ben Martin is third at 141 (-3) after today’s 71.
Freshmen Alex Ratliff and Simon Forsslund are playing as individuals. Ratliff is tied for 61st at 154 (+10) after today’s 79. Forsslund also shot 79 for his second round to place him tied for 103rd-place at 159 (+15).
Chattanooga concludes the tournament with a final 18 holes on Sunday. Qvicker leads off as the Mocs are playing with Clemson and Old Dominion.

Elon Improves to Tie for 14th at Furman Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Chattanooga’s Steven Fox fired a four-under par 68 to grab sole possession of first place and help the Mocs into a three-stroke lead over Clemson after two rounds at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course on Saturday. The Elon Phoenix improved from 16th into a 14th-place tie with a round of 303 on Saturday. There are 24 teams in the field.
Fox (70-68--138) birdied six holes, including four in a row, to guide Chattanooga (289-291--580) to a three-over 291. The Mocs lead second place Clemson (289-294--583) by three strokes and hold an 11-stroke advantage over third place Old Dominion (293-298--591) entering Sunday’s final round.
Elon's Stephen Dressel and Scott Hockemeyer have been Elon's top two performers through two rounds. Both sit at 152 and are tied for 42nd in the field of 135 golfers. Dressel followed up Friday's round of 74 with a 78 on Saturday while Hockemeyer carded a 77 on Saturday after posting a 75 on Friday.
Saturday's best round for Elon came from Mike Fekete who carded a 74. Fekete shot a 79 on day one and is tied for 53rd with a two-round score of 153.
Both Jayson Judy and Phil Bartholomew carded identical scores of 76 on Saturday after each fired an 80 on Friday. The duo is tied for 78th with a score of 156.
After shooting a 305 on day one, Furman vaulted up the leaderboard to fourth with a second round score of 290, the best of the day, to sit at 595. The Paladins were tied for 14th after day one. Western Carolina sits fifth with a 597 (291-306).
Elon (308-303--611) is tied with UAB which tallied a round of 301 on day two. The pair sits one stroke ahead of Samford (300-312--612) which dropped from sixth on day one. Elon also leads East Carolina (17th; 303-312--615), Davidson (18th; 313-306--619) and Appalachian State (21st; 313-313--626) among others.
The third and final round will be played on Sunday.
North Florida Leads
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Junior Joe Monte trimmed his opening round score by five strokes to lead the Eagles during the second round of the 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational Saturday (March 20). Monte launched a 3-under par 69 using five birdies, including three on the back nine, to match his lowest round of the season. The three-day tournament is being contested on the par 72, 6,962 yard Forest Heights Country Club.
North Florida held onto first place posting a second-round 279 to go along with its opening round 285. The Osprey stand at 12-under par (564) and best second-place Auburn by seven strokes heading into the final round on Sunday. The Tigers shaved five strokes off Friday’s opening round to climb two spots on the leaderboard to second place. Virginia slipped into third place with a 287 third round for a 573 two-day total and lead fourth-place North Carolina State by two strokes. The Wolfpack moved into fourth at 575, while Mississippi dropped two spots into fifth-place at 577.
North Florida’s Kevin Phelan owned the day’s lowest round shooting a 6-under 66. Phelan began the day tied for fourth and currently holds a two stroke lead in first place at 136 with one round left to play. Fellow teammate J.C. Horne matched his opening round 69 on the second day to stand in second on the individual leaderboard.
Host institution Georgia Southern improved on its first round score by three shots with a 289. The Eagles stand in sole possession of eighth place at 581, four strokes out of a top five finish.
“We played a solid round today and I’m proud of the team for performing well when the pin placements were much tougher today,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Joe [Monte] came out and had a great round for us. Looking at the team standings, if we can come out tomorrow with a strong round, we are capable of climbing a couple spots on the leaderboard.”
Monte (Chantilly, Va.) showed the most improvement on the second day. Consecutive birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 erased a bogey on two as the junior took the turn at 1-under. Birdies opened and closed the back nine as Monte improved on the final nine holes by five strokes from Friday for a second round three-under par 69. With the day’s third lowest round, Monte jumped from T36 to T13.
After leading the Eagles on the opening day, senior Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) owned one of the team’s second lowest rounds carding a 73. Zabroske posted birdies on Nos. 7 and 14, but three bogeys on the front nine hindered the senior who finished at 1-over. The senior shares 23rd-place entering the final round with a 145.
Fellow classmate Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) added two strokes to his opening round even-par 72 and stands in a tie for 30th. Deal birdied three holes on the day with two coming on the front nine for a two-day total, 146.
Redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) got the day rolling for Georgia Southern opening with a birdie on three. Sander then launched an eagle on the par 4, 337-yard hole five to claim a 3-under tally heading into No. 6. Sander ended the round with a birdie on 18, a hole he triple bogeyed in the opening round. The redshirt-freshman finished the round at 1-over 73 and stands in a tie for 38th at 147.
Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) followed suit of his opening round 74 with a matching round on day two. Eight consecutive pars opened the front nine for Fulford who bogeyed nine to make the turn at 1-over. Fulford erased one of two bogeys on the back nine with a birdie on the final hole. The senior stands in a tie for 49th-place with a 148 two-day total.
Individual Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) stands in a tie for third-place trimming his opening round by three shots. Blondell owns two under-par scores through two rounds with a 71 and 69, respectively. The junior posted an almost perfect round with five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars. Blondell moved from a ninth-place tie into a third-place tie with Mississippi’s Jonathan Randolph.
The final round of action begins Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Paired with Georgia Southern for the final round will be LSU and Vanderbilt. The Eagles tee off first beginning on the front nine. First-round individual leader, WCU senior Tanner Briele, slipped to fourth after carding a six-over 78 in the second round.

One day after firing a tournament and course-record round of 65, Briele’s 78 on Saturday dropped him three spots in the standings to fourth with a two-round total of one-under, 143. After not carding a single bogey on Friday, Briele penciled in six on Saturday including four on the back nine and a double-bogey on the par 3 eighth. The New Bern, N.C., native is just five strokes in arrears of tournament leader, Fox.
Senior Ricky Stout led the Catamounts in the second round, trimming four strokes off his opening round score to shoot two-over, 74, on Saturday to move from a tie for 43rd into a tie for 29th. Stout, who scored three bogies against one birdie on Saturday, is tied with teammate Kyle Wilson, who fell from ninth into the tie for 29th after also carding a six-over, 78.
Opening on the back nine, Drew Miller shot two-under 34 on the front nine to conclude his round, posting a birdie and an Eagle on the par 5 second hole. However, two bogies cancelled out a pair of birdies on the back with a double-bogey and a five-over 10 forced him to make the turn at seven over, finishing at five-over 77 to be in the clubhouse tied for 69th.
Rounding out the Catamount order was freshman Trey White who shaved five strokes off his opening round to shoot 77 on Saturday to move into a tie for 103rd overall. Playing as an individual, senior Benjy Davey carded a four-over 76 to move into a tie for 78th overall.

'Cats Move Up Four Spots at Furman Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Davidson men's golf team improved four places during the second round of competition at the Furman Intercollegiate, moving up to 18th-place behind strong performances from Jackson Taylor and John Skeadas Saturday on the Furman University Golf Course.
Taylor and Skeadas both fired two-over par 74's as the Wildcats improved by seven strokes on the second day (313+306=619). Taylor now sits in a tie for 42nd in the 24-team tournament at 152 (78+74). Junior captain Bobby Urso is one stroke behind at 153. Urso fired a 74 Friday, but posted a seven-over 79 Saturday.
Skeadas is at 155 after rebounding from the 81 he scored in the first round. Christopher Rollins (80+19=159) rounds out Davidson's scoring group.
